This is the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology hotline report for thursday,
February 24, 2005.
A GREAT GRAY OWL has finally made it to the southern part of the state.
There is one bird that is being seen in the city of Stoughton, just south of
Madison. this GREAT GRAY OWL is being seen on Door Creek Road, just north of
Fairview Road. The GREAT GRAY OWL oftens sits on the south side of the
road directly across from the power substation. It prefers the brucsh piles
on the other side of the railroad tracks and the advantage of the utility
poles along the railroad tracks. For the last couple days the bird has been
present after 9:00 am so that people who have been there earlier might not
have seen it. It is nice that at least one GREAT GRAY OWL has made it to
the southern part of the state, in this case in Dane County.
Also the NORTHERN HAWK OWL at Harrinton Beach State Park in Ozaukee County
was reported as not being seen as it was missed for several days, but the
bird has been seen now for the last couple of weeks quite regularily by
everybody. It is being seen along the entrance road to the park, east of
the spot
where you check in and pay your fee. Usually near the area of Puckets Pond.
this is where the bird is quite regularily.
There is also reports this week of a adult female NORTHERN GOSHAWK in the
same
location. Hopefully this bird will move on as the NORTHERN HAWK OWL is a
likely target of the NORTHERN GOSHAWK. The NORTHERN HAWK OWL Hhas been seen
in the last couple days.
There is also another NORTHERN HAWK OWL bing seen south of Superior, along
Highway 53, near Solon
Springs. At least two birds are present on this stretch of road.
There is also one NORTHERN HAWK OWL that is being seen very regularily at
the Ashland Airport.
There still are a few GREAT GRAY OWLS in the Superior area and the area
south of Superior. The real hotspot now is in Burnette County. Drive the
strectch of Highway D between Highway 35 and Grantsburg. the intersection
of D and M is a very good area. People have been reporting as many as
fifteen GREAT GRAY OWLS along Highway D. there is a very good
concentration of these birds around here now.
The SNOWY OWL near Horicon Marsh is still being seen quite regularily. this
bird is being seen at the intersection of Lake Emily Road and Buckthorn
Road. There is also another SNOWY OWL, possibly two birds, present in
Outagamie County,
near the intersection of Highway S and Sectionline Road.
In Milwaukee a male HARLEQUIN DUCK, a second year bird, is being seen with
regularity near the petroleum pier. This is the pier that is about 1/2 mile
north of the Coast Guard Impoundment, underneath the Hoan Bridge. They are
hanging among the pilings of this large pier. There is also one adult
male
HARLEQUIN DUCK that has been seen acouple of times at the Southshore Yacht
Club. the bird is usually present out underneath the piers out toward the
rocky break wall.
The MOCKINGBIRD is still being seen on the west side of Madison in
Middleton . It is being seen on Pheasant Branch Road just south of
Whitelsey Road, usually in the brushy area along the side of the road. This
bird is very difficult to find and often takes a long time before the bird
makes an appearance.
.
The SPOTTED TOWHEE is still being seen in Muskego County Park in Wauksesha
County . This park is located at the intersection of Janesville Road and
Woods Road. The bird is being seen by Picnic Area # 5, check just west of
the
small building. This is a concession stand which is closed for the
season. there is an area where seed that is scattered on the
ground. The SPOTTED TOWHEE is often seen eating the seed scattered on the
ground.
GRAY PARTRIDGE is reported in southeastern Wisconsin for the first time in a
while. It is being seen in Ozaukee County. They are being found on Six
Mile Road, between Dixie Road and Highway A. Also not far from here, on six
Mile road just south of Jay Road, SHORT-EARED OWLS are being seen.
. in the same area. It was seen on Friday on
Pickard Road, about 1.2 miles south of County Highway A. This is just a
little south of where the GREAT GRAY OWL is being seen.
There is at least one SNOWY OWL that is being seen near Freedom in Outagamie
County. This bird was seen yesterday near the intersection of Highway J and
Highway S.
An adult male HARLEQUIN DUCK was seen last week in Milwaukee. It was seen
at North Point, which is just north of Bradford Beach. this is a good spot
to check for Harlequin Ducks. Another good spot in past years has been
Shorewood Nature Preserve, which is located a couple blocks of Capitol Drive
right on the lake front.
If you have any new reports or updates on any birds you can call
