Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This
Birdline covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to
Thursday, May 15, 2007.
The passerine migration is now well under way. Most woodlands are now
reporting vireos, thrushes and all the "common" warblers. Only the rare
species are reported below.
ADAMS COUNTY:
An adult BALD EAGLE was observed flying over Fairfield on May 7 (MO).
BEDFORD COUNTY:
Shawnee State Park produced 1 BALD EAGLE and 5 GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS
between May 8 and 11 (BHo, JHo).
BLAIR COUNTY:
Ponds in farmer's fields located in the Spring Cove area between Roaring
Spring and Martinsburg produced 4 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS and 4 LEAST
SANDPIPERS (DWi).
BRADFORD COUNTY:
A SWAINSON'S WARBLER was found near New Era on May 10 (TG).
CAMERON COUNTY:
A few EVENING GROSBEAKS continue to visit feeders in Emporium through
May 7 (MJ).
CARBON COUNTY:
A power line cut in Penn Forest Township produced 3 GOLDEN-WINGED
WARBLERS and 1 BREWSTER'S WARBLER (DWe).
CENTRE COUNTY:
One SORA, winnowing COMMON SNIPE, 5 BARRED OWLS and 3 NORTHERN SAW-WHET
OWLS were found at Black Moshannon State Park between May 7 and 10 (NB,
DG).
A SURF SCOTER was reportedly seen at the lake at Poe Valley on May 8 and
9 (RB, BF).
Scotia Barrens produced 1 LEAST FLYCATCHER, 1 PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 16
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS, 1 BREWSTER'S WARBLER, 1 CAPE MAY WARBLER and 1
CERULEAN WARBLER between May 10 and 14 (JK, NK, JV).
Two SORAS were calling from Julian Wetlands on May 11 and one SORA was
heard on May 12 (NBu, JL).
Bald Eagle State Park produced 2 BALD EAGLES on May 11 (MOd).
A visit to Lederer Park on May 13 found 1 OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, 1
LEAST FLYCATCHER and 3 PURPLE FINCHES (NBu).
CLEARFIELD COUNTY:
A total of 2 WHIP-POOR-WILLS and 6 HENSLOW'S SPARROWS were heard calling
in fields on Troy Hill near Philipsburg on May 10 (JK).
CLINTON COUNTY:
A PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was found at a woodland pond in the Rote/Salona
area on May 9 (WL, AT).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
Mud Level Road produced up to 1 GLOSSY IBIS, 16 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 1
AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, 5 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 70 GREATER YELLOWLEGS,
70 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 15 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 4 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 1
RUDDY TURNSTONE, 1 SANDERLING, 5 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 50 LEAST
SANDPIPERS, 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 2 STILT
SANDPIPERS, 6 DUNLIN, 11 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and 1 WILSON'S
PHALAROPE between May 8 and 14 (AM, RK, CR, DW, RS, JDe).
State Game Lands 169 yielded AMERICAN BITTERN, 21 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT
HERONS and BARRED OWL on May 10 (AM). May 14 produced 1 LEAST BITTERN
and 1 SORA (DH).
There were 4 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS and 2 DICKCISSELS along Gephart road
on May 10 (AM). Six RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were seen on May 14 (DH).
The Huntsdale Fish Hatchery hidden pond yielded 1 AMERICAN BITTERN and 1
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER on May 14 (DH).
DAUPHIN COUNTY:
A WILLET, 8 LEAST SANDPIPERS and 2 DUNLIN were seen on May 9 in the
Susquehanna River from the West Fairview Boat Ramp (RK). May 10 yielded
6 LEAST SANDPIPERS and 12 DUNLINS (KH).
HUNTINGDON COUNTY:
Birds seen at Lake Perez on May 8 included 2 SEMPALMATED PLOVERS, 2
SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 4 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 3 LEAST SANDPIPERS and 1
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER (JKa, LGr). A BALD EAGLE was observed at Lake
Perez on May 14 (GG).
The southern portion of the county produced 2 CAPE MAY WARLBERS, 8
CERULEAN WARBLERS and 4 PINE SISKINS during the migration count on May
10 (AW).
JUNIATA COUNTY:
A flooded pond outside of Oakland Mills produced 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 6
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 3 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER and 2
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS on May 7 and 8 (CK, AT).
Among the species found during the migration count on May 10 were 2
SANDHILL CRANES, 1 OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, 1 LEAST FLYCATCHER, 1
PHILADELPHIA VIERO, 1 GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER and 5 CERULEAN WARBLERS (CK,
AT, AbT, MT, JD).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
A EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was observed on May 8 at the southeastern
corner of Kendig Square Shopping Center in Willow Street (BS, TA).
An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen in Lancaster County Park on May 8
(DW).
Conejohela Flats yielded 13 BALD EAGLES, 1 PEREGRINE FALCON, 1
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 19 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 4 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 5
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 39 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 67 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 1
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 5 DUNLIN and 2 PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS between May
8 and 10 (BS, CR, AS).
Some of the better birds found around the county on May 10 during the
migration count included 2 SORA, 2 VIRGINIA RAILS, GREATER YELLOWLEGS,
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, LEAST
SANDPIPERS and 1 CAPE MAY WARBLER (BC).
Octoraro Lake yielded 6 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 17 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 15
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 55 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 18 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 1
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER and 162 LEAST SANDPIPERS (CC).
A SUMMER TANAGER was found in Chickies Rock County Park on May 10 (CR,
AS).
A SANDHILL CRANE was seen at Middle Creek Wildlife Propagation Area on
May 11 (DW).
LEBANON COUNTY:
The pond along N. Mt. Pleasant Road yielded 1 TUNDRA SWAN, 2
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 12 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 6
SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 162 LEAST SANDPIPERS and 1 DUNLIN on May 14 (RM).
LYCOMING COUNTY:
There were 2 SORA and 2 VIRGINIA RAILS at a wetland near Marsh Hill on
May 10 (DF).
POTTER COUNTY:
Two NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS were heard calling in southeastern Potter
County on the evening of May 10 (NB).
SCHUYKILL/BERKS COUNTY:
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary reported counting 2 BALD EAGLES, 2 unidentified
eagles and 1 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK between May 10 and 11 (LG).
TIOGA COUNTY:
Three BLACK VULTURES and nesting BALD EAGLES were seen at Hammond Lake
on May 10 (JH).
YORK COUNTY:
An AMERICAN BITTERN was observed at a pond in Newberry Township on May 9
(JM).
There were at least 3 PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS at Brunner's Island on May
11 and 1 BLUE GROSBEAK was found on May 13 (DC).
Three WILLETS were observed flying over Dillsburg on May 11 (JK).
