Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for
Friday, March 28th at 5:00 p.m. The highlights of
today's tape are WESTERN GREBE, WESTERN TANAGER,
SCOTT'S ORIOLE, NORTHERN SHRIKE, and spring migrants.
Last Sunday a WESTERN GREBE was spotted off Wolfe's
Pond Park on Staten Island, presumably the same grebe
seen off Sandy Hook earlier. The grebe has
subsequently been seen from there, and to the south
along the shore. On Monday the grebe was relocated
off Lemon Creek Park, a little south of Wolfe's Pond,
and has since been seen down to Mount Loretto Park as
well. Today it was spotted off the pier at Lemon
Creek. These parks are all fairly close to each other
off Hylan Blvd. Going southwest, the sequence is
Wolfe's Pond Park, then Lemon Creek, with the pier
providing a good vantage point, then Mount Loretto.
On Wednesday a female-looking WESTERN TANAGER was
found in Central Park, staying in the same location
through today. The tanager has been frequenting some
viburnum and other plantings just north of the
Winterdale Arch near the West 81st Street park
entrance. If entering the park from 81st St, take the
path that goes slightly left, and you will see the
Winterdale Arch. The plantings are to the left of the
Arch, on either slope up to the roadway that goes over
the Arch. The favored viburnum plant is on the west
side of the roadway.
The SCOTT'S ORIOLE continues to frequent lower
Manhattan. It was recently seen between 5th and 6th
Streets, just west of First Avenue, but its regular
feeding location is not currently known. It could be
looked for in this area, though it may now be covering
a fairly broad area. Nearby Tompkins Square Park is a
possibility.
Last Sunday at Massapequa Preserve the drake Eurasian
form of GREEN-WINGED TEAL was present again on the
pond adjacent to the eastern end of Pittsburgh Avenue.
Also on the pond were eight LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS,
six WILSON'S SNIPE and a GREATER YELLOWLEGS. A drake
EURASIAN WIGEON was also still on the large pond at
the south end of the park that is on the north side of
Merrick Road.
Another drake Eurasian form of GREEN-WINGED TEAL was
at the Norman Levy Park, the old landfill on the east
side of the Meadowbrook Parkway. This is probably the
same teal present here in early winter. The park
entrance is off Merrick Road, just east of the
Meadowbrook, and the teal was with several other
Green-wings on the creek, on the right side just
before you turn into the parking lot.
An immature NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen Monday in the
eastern dune area at Sunken Meadow State Park, where
other birds present included GREAT EGRET, OSPREY, and
TREE SWALLOW.
Birds seen Sunday at Jones Beach West End included 25
PIPING PLOVERS, three EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, and a
recently arrived flock of TREE SWALLOWS.
A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was at Gardiner County Park
in Bay Shore on Wednesday, and other migrants in
Central Park lately have included GREAT EGRET, EASTERN
PHOEBE, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET,
and PINE WARBLER.
Migrants seen recently on Staten Island included
BLUE-WINGED TEAL and WILSON'S SNIPE at Mount Loretto,
with a perhaps overwintering ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at
Lemon Creek.
Out East on Sunday, four KING EIDER were still in a
mixed flock of sea ducks, including some COMMON EIDER
off the beach in the Town of Montauk. A LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL at Lazy Point in Napeague was also
still present Sunday.
To phone in reports on Long Island call Tony Lauro at
(631) 734-4126, or during the day except Sunday call
Tom Burke at (212) 297-4804. This service is
sponsored by the Linnaean Society of New York and the
National Audubon Society.
