[~BEGIN RBA TAPE~]

Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for
Friday, March 14th at 9:00 p.m. The highlights of
today's tape are BLACK-NECKED STILTS; ROSS'S, GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED, BARNACLE, and CACKLING GEESE; and BLACK
HEADED, ICELAND, and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS.

Late this afternoon, two BLACK-NECKED STILTS were
found at Hook Pond in East Hampton. They were in the
western arm of the pond as viewed from the parking lot
on the east side of Ocean Avenue just before it ends
at the beach.

We have no recent word on the Stony Brook PINK-FOOTED
GOOSE which may have followed the Montauk Pink-footed
north.

The ROSS'S GOOSE in Watermill was still present at
least to Monday, but was moving around quite a bit
with the Canadas it travels with. When not roosting
on Shorts Pond which is on the west side of Scuttle
Hole Road two miles north of Route 27, it has been
found in fields along Cooks Lane, Head of Pond Road
and Narrow Lane, all in the Watermill area north of
Route 27. A couple of CACKLING GEESE and some SNOW
GEESE also continue in that area.

The Montauk BARNACLE GOOSE was spotted again Sunday on
the pasture on the south side of Route 27 at the Deep
Hollow Ranch. Also in that area 25 COMMON REDPOLLS
were around the end of East Lake Drive on the east
side of Montauk Harbor entrance on Monday, and the
Napeague LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at Lazy Point was
still present Sunday with another LESSER BLACK-BACKED
along Horse Mill Lane in Mecox Sunday.

On the North Fork a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was
spotted with Canadas and three SNOW GEESE Sunday on
the south side of Route 25 in Calverton, just west of
Manor Road.

At Massapequa Preserve Sunday, waterfowl included a
brief visit by a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE along
with a flock of Canadas and the continuing presence of
a drake Eurasian form of GREEN-WINGED TEAL. This pond
is adjacent to the eastern end of Pittsburgh Avenue.

The Valley Stream GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE has not
been seen lately, but a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was
at the Hendrickson Park pond today. This pond is
north of West Merrick Road and just east of the Valley
Stream High School.

On Tuesday, single immature BLACK-HEADED and ICELAND
GULLS were seen on a clam kill along the beaches at
Point Lookout.

At the former Grumman airport grasslands on Thursday
evening there were still three SHORT-EARED OWLS and a
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, plus TURKEY VULTURES, three
NORTHERN HARRIERS and two AMERICAN KESTRELS, all
subsisting here thanks to the pristine nature of this
habitat, now under strong misguided pressure for
development. Please join in the efforts to save this
property.

Fifteen PINE SISKINS were still visiting the feeders
in a white pine grove at Connetquot River State Park
Sunday. This grove is behind the administrative
buildings.

A COMMON REDPOLL was spotted at Jamaica Bay Refuge on
Monday.

An OSPREY was at Orient on Sunday. AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHERS have shown up at Jones Inlet and
Shinnecock, and EASTERN PHOEBES have recently appeared
at Prospect Park, at Jones beach West End, and in East
Hampton. AMERICAN WOODCOCK are now displaying at most
appropriate locations.

To phone in reports on Long Island call Tony Lauro at
(631) 734-4126, or during the day except Sunday call
Tom Burke at (212) 297-4804. This service is
sponsored by the Linnaean Society of New York and the
National Audubon Society. Thank you for calling.
