BEGIN TAPE

Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for
Friday, February 29th 2008 at 7pm. The highlights of
today's tape are PINK-FOOTED GOOSE & GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, LITTLE GULL & BLACK-HEADED GULL
and BARROW'S GOLDENEYE.

Firstly, we have no further reports of the SCOTT'S
ORIOLE in Union Square Park in Manhattan subsequent to
February 21st following its brief reappearance there.

The Cedar Beach TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was looked for
but not seen last weekend and may have moved on.

The PINK-FOOTED GOOSE at Stony Brook was still present
yesterday. This goose visits and overnights on the
Mill Pond along the west side of Main Street just
south of Harbor Road. It has been seen on the Mill
Pond at various times of the day as it moves in and
out with a Canada flock but it is most reliable early
in the morning or late in the afternoon when the geese
come in for the night.

Reports from eastern Long Island including on the
PINK-FOOTED GOOSE out there were quite lacking this
week.

The clam kill near the dredge site along the beach a
half mile east of Gilgo attracted a few hundred
Bonaparte's Gulls and an adult LITTLE GULL last
Saturday afternoon. The LITTLE GULL was also present
early Sunday morning but was not seen afterwards
replaced later Sunday by an immature BLACK-HEADED
GULL.

A few TREE SWALLOWS along the beach there seemed to
survive the winter at least so far.

The LITTLE GULL did reappear at the site on Wednesday
afternoon.

A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was still in Bayville Sunday seen
off the entrance road to Centre Island east of
Bayville. The Barrow's, with accompanying Common
Goldeneyes, is often off the rocky point visible from
the causeway to Centre Island. This has been the most
reliable site for the Barrow's this winter.

At Jones Beach on Wednesday an adult ICELAND GULL was
present in West End field 2 parking lot and an
immature LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL visited Jones Beach
field 6. A drake HARLEQUIN DUCK was with scoters on
the ocean off Cedar Beach on Tuesday.

A Monday visit to the Massapequa Preserve pond that is
adjacent to the east end of Pittsburgh Ave. noted the
continuing presence of the Eurasian form of
GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 7 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and 4
WILSON'S SNIPE.

In Westchester County a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE
was present with Canadas last Sunday at Silver Lake
Park in north White Plains.

To phone in reports on Long Island call Tony Lauro at
(631) 734-4126, or during the day except Sunday call
Tom Burke at (212) 297-4804. This service is sponsored
by the Linnaean Society of New York and the National
Audubon Society. Thank you for calling.
