Be sure to see last Monday's edition of East End Birds, if you are coming
East this weekend!

The PINK-FOOTED GOOSE and the BARNACLE GOOSE remain in the vicinity of Deep
Hollow Ranch in Montauk, and both were reported in their usual spots on Feb
1. An annotated Google map of the area can be found at
http://tinyurl.com/38krav. The Barnacle is generally seen in the pasture
south of Montauk Highway and the Pink-footed is generally seen in the fields
to the north of the buildings at Teddy Roosevelt park. Recently, the
Pink-foot has spent much of its time at the north end of the Deep Hollow
pasture and has at times moved into the Star Top pasture, especially late in
the day. On Feb 1, both geese were found at Lyon Field (the baseball fields
two blocks north of the Circle in town) in Montauk village. If the geese
cannot be found in the vicinity of Deep Hollow then I would recommend look
at the ball fields or at Montauk Downs State Park.

A first-year GLAUCOUS GULL was at the Montauk Lighthouse on Jan 28 (VB). At
Camp Hero State Park there were 3 RAZORBILLS and a BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE on
Jan 29 (PL).

Thirty RED CROSSBILLS were spotted in Teddy Roosevelt Co Park on Jan 29 (PL)

In Bridgehampton there was a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER on Church Lane on Jan
26 (BC).

Two WOOD DUCKS were spotted at the David's Lane duck feeding area on Jan 29
(PL).

A MARSH WREN, the first of the year, was found at Wainscot Pond on Jan 13
(VB, KRu).

At Sagaponack Pond there were 4 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, a MERLIN, and a
COMMON MERGANSER on Jan 26 (BC). Now that hunting season is closed,
Sagaponack should begin to fill with ducks.

The YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was still present at the end of Landing Rd in East
Quogue on Jan 31 (ESch). Let's see if someone can find it in February!

On Jan 29 there was an adult ICELAND GULL at Oakland's Restaurant near the
Shinnecock inlet; 27 BOAT-TAILED GRACKLES were in the Ponquogue Beach
parking lot; 3 AMERICAN BITTERNS were along Dune Rd; and 40 COMMON REDPOLLS
were in the vicinity of Docker's Restaurant in Quogue (KF).

Seven COMMON REDPOLLS were at Cupsogue Co Park on Jan 29 (KF).

At Mashomack on Shelter Island there was a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, a BROWN
CREEPER and a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, the first of the year, on Jan 26 (GR).
An adult BALD EAGLE was in Mashomack on Jan 21 (ML, CB), while a
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was there on Jan 27 (fide NH). A MERLIN was in the
preserve on Jan 31 (MSch). An adult RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was at the
Westmoreland Tree Farm on Jan 29 (NH). A female WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was
at a Ward Rd feeder on Jan 29 (NH).

At the Epcal facility in Calverton there were 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS on Jan 31,
as well as a single ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK (DK). The EASTERN PHOEBE was again
seen along the fence line on Grumman Blvd at the western end of the road on
Jan 31 (DK), and had been seen earlier in the week also (JCl).

A PEREGRINE FALCON flew over the Saddle Lakes Condos in Riverhead on Feb 1
(BA). The RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen again in Northville on Jan 29 (MLL).
An AMERICAN KESTREL was seen on Manor Lane in Jamesport on Jan 29 (MLL).

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was along Sound Ave in Cutchogue on Jan 27, just west of
Horton's Lane and just east of Mudd Vineyard.

A first-year ICELAND GULL was at Orient Point on Jan 27 (PL).

BAD NEWS

The MONK PARAKEETS that have nested by Tully's Seafood Market on Foster Ave
in Hampton Bays were found dead in the parking lot the morning after a
recent storm, having apparently been electrocuted during the night. These
birds nest on utility poles seeking out the warmth provided by transformers,
so I guess electrocution is an occasional inevitability. Still, it was nice
having the parrots on the East End. There is another pair in Hampton Bays, I
believe, and I will relay information as I receive it.

THE GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT…

…is coming Feb 15-18. See http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/ for more
information.
