This is Terry Toppins with the Montana Birding Hotline sponsored by Five
Valleys
Audubon Society recorded late Thursday May 1st, 2008.
There is a single WHOOPING CRANE at Medicine Lake NWR that has been present
since April 27th. Anyone going to see this bird, please keep your distance.
The SANDHILL CRANE migration across Northeastern Montana is truly a
spectacle
with flocks of several thousand reported from Glasgow to Westby on the same
morning.
Lisa Lister from Poplar was out the same morning of April 17th and watched
several thousand cranes take flight from adjacent fields. While she was
watching
them spiral upward, she noticed 3 bright white WHOOPING CRANES among the
thousands of gray cranes.
The first pair of HARLEQUIN DUCKS of the year were reported in Glacier
National
Park on April 27th above Avalanche Creek by Steve Gniadek and a fisheries
biologist
saw another pair today at Logan Creek. The road is still closed so hiking
or biking
is required to check upstream.
I have to report on the fallout of birds Ted Nordhagen had in Westby today
the first
due to a spring storm. In his neighborhood he had 2 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 1
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 1 SWAINSON'S THRUSH, 30+ ORANGE-
CROWNED WARBLERS, 75+ YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 2 BLACK & WHITE
WARBLERS, 2 OVENBIRDS, 2 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, 4 CHIPPING,
6 CLAY-COLORED, 3 FOX, 35+ LINCOLN'S, 3 SONG, 3 VESPER, 75-100
HARRIS'S, 350+ WHITE-THROATED, and 350+ WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS,
and 2 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS in addition to 7 other species and small flocks of
shorebirds flying over.
Beth Madden had a BROAD-WINGED HAWK flying over Medicine Lake April 30th.
Dan Casey found a female RUSTY BLACKBIRD at Wiley Dike near Somers April
30th.
Anne Morley of Swan Lake found a GREAT EGRET at the mouth of Spring Creek
on Swan Lake April 27th.
John Carlson stopped at a reservoir in South Valley County near Glasgow and
found
a banded PIPING PLOVER, a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and further down the
road 3 MOUNTAIN PLOVERS.
Cheryl Farmer was north of Beaverhead Rock State Park on Highway 41
southwest of
Twin Bridges April 25th and saw a CATTLE EGRET.
April 24th John Carlson found an EASTERN PHOEBE at the Kids Fishing Pond
near
the Interpretive Center at Fort Peck.
April 24th Chuck Carlson counted 123 COMMON LOONS in the Dredge Cuts at
Fort Peck.
Beth Madden reported a late SNOWY OWL was in the sandhills at Medicine Lake
NWR on April 17th.
Larry Weeks will lead a field trip to Smurfit-Stone Container Plant west of
Missoula on
Mullan Road on Mother's Day May 11th. Meet at the UofM Fieldhouse parking
lot at
800 am or at the mill at 830 am for this half day trip.
If you have sightings you would like to share please leave a message or call
Carole or
Terry at 549-6027. Thanks and Good Birding. HL-276.
