This is Terry Toppins with the Montana Birding Hotline sponsored by Five
Valleys
Audubon Society recorded late Friday March 7, 2008.

Jim and Lark Greaves from Thompson Falls found an adult male TUFTED DUCK
just west of Noxon Thursday March 6th in the little bay between Highway 200
and
the Bull River Campground where the Bull River dumps into the Clark Fork
River.
This will be listed as either a first or second state record (an earlier
record a number
of years ago was not accepted at the time). Interestingly, it is almost
straight north
of where a Tufted Duck was documented in Idaho in 2003 and 2004 just west of
Cataldo, Idaho.
The pair of BEWICK'S WRENS are still being seen sporadically on Sleven's
Island
at Fort Missoula in Missoula. They were first found in December 2006. They
do not
seem to respond to tapes, toots or pishes and are usually located by finding
them
scratching in the underbrush. I saw one of them yesterday March 6th.
VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS put in an appearance at the Tufted Duck location west
of Noxon today for the first report for Spring.
Dan and Susannah Casey found 2 WESTERN BLUEBIRDS between Dixon and Perma
along Highway 200 today March 7th.
John Parker found 79 BALD EAGLES north of Bozeman and Belgrade today the 7th
while
scouting for a field trip he leads tomorrow. He also found an EURASIAN
WIGEON on
central pond between Bozeman and Belgrade.
Wayne Tree and Bob Danley found an EURASIAN WIGEON at Lee Metcalf NWR
Thursday
March 6th.
SHARP-TAILED GROUSE are dancing in North Eastern Montana. Ted Nordhagen
reported
March 5th one lek of about 50 birds is dancing almost on the county road.
CACKLING GEESE have been present most of the winter in Glasgow as reported
by
Chuck Carlson. Dan Casey found one on Flathead Lake near Somers on March 1st
and one at Church Slough north and east of Somers on March 4th.
Larry Weeks will lead an evening field trip for Five Valleys Audubon to
Maclay Flats on
Wednesday March 12th to look and listen for owls. Meet at the Maclay Flats
parking lot
at 6pm.
If you have sightings you would like to share, please leave a message or
call Carole or
Terry at 549-6027. Thanks and good birding. HL275.
