This is Terry Toppins with the Montana Birding Hotline sponsored by
Five Valleys Audubon Society recorded very early Wednesday August 15, 2007.
Heidi Zielinskis found a WHITE-WINGED DOVE visiting her feeders August 8th
about
1 1/2 miles east of Lee Metcalf NWR. If you drive south from Florence on
the East Side
Highway after a few miles you will find Fawn Lane on the left (east side) of
the road just
before a big 90 degree right hand turn. Her house is the second on the left
(428b Fawn
Lane). The bird can usually be seen from the road on the bare branches of
several
big snags behind her house. It is easiest to find early in the morning, but
Carole and I
saw it around 500pm after patiently waiting for a while.
A GREAT EGRET is in Great Falls along West Park Bank and found by Arla
Eckert on
August 8th and was still present as of AUGUST 11TH.
Tim Barksdale reports that there is still a GREAT EGRET at Freezout WMA near
Choteau
that was found earlier this summer.
Nate Kohler found a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER at the Warm Springs Ponds complex
on August 13th.
Mike Lesnik was in the Long Pines area of the Custer National Forest
southeast of Ekalaka
and found a male THREE-TOED WOODPECKER, a single juvenile LEWIS'S WOODPECKER
and about 100 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS along Forest Roads 117, 119 and 818.
Living in Western Montana, I can't imagine seeing 100 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS.
Larry Weeks will lead a half day field trip to the Smurfit-Stone plant west
of Missoula on
Saturday August 11th.
If you have sightings you would like to share please leave a message, or
call Carole or Terry
at 549-6027. Thanks and good birding to you. HL-273.
