Of Special Note

 

New arrivals included MUTE SWAN, WILLET, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER,
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, LAUGHING GULL, MARSH WREN, HOUSE WREN, SCARLET
TANAGER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED
GREEN WARBLER, PRAIRIE WARBLER, and OVENBIRD. 

 

EVENING GROSBEAKS are sporadically turning up in central, northern and
eastern Maine.

 

York County

 

The first report of a COMMON TERN was at Fortunes Rock Beach in
Biddeford on April 26.

 

Four WILLETS were on Hills Beach in Biddeford on April 28.

 

A HOUSE WREN was singing on April 28 in Berwick as well as a
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER.

 

Sixty-two GLOSSY IBISES were feeding in the water-logged grass on Saco
Island in Biddeford on April 29.

 

A BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER and a BROWN THRASHER were found at the Wells
Reserve on May 1.

 

Greater Portland

 

Three MUTE SWANS were spotted in the Back Cove of Portland from Baxter
Boulevard near the stoplight with Vannah Street early on May 2.

 

On April 26, two MARSH WRENS were behind the Pelreco building along Pine
Point Road in Scarborough Marsh.

 

Six WILLETS and a MERLIN were in Scarborough Marsh on May 1.

 

A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was on Broadturn Road in Scarborough on April 25.

 

A GREEN HERON was near the ponds in Evergreen Cemetery in Portland on
April 25.

 

An OVENBIRD was singing at Evergreen Cemetery on May1.

 

Two SANDHILL CRANES were in the south corn field of the Sabbath Day Lake
compound on Route 26 in New Gloucester on April 27.

 

Two BLACK VULTURES passed by the hawk watch at Bradbury Mountain State
Park in Pownal on April 26.

 

A RUSTY BLACKBIRD and a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER were seen at Florida
Lake Park in Freeport on April 26.

 

A SCARLET TANAGER was seen on Hermit Island in Phippsburg on April 30.

 

Lewiston-Auburn

 

Unusual for an inland location here in Maine, two GLOSSY IBISES were
seen on River Road in Livermore on April 29.

 

Midcoast

 

Shorebirds found at Weskeag Marsh in South Thomaston on May 2 included
45 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, two LESSER YELLOWLEGS, one SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER
and two SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS.

 

A PRAIRIE WARBLER was found in the Cathance River Preserve on April 26. 

 

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was in a West Bath yard on April 30.

 

A GREAT EGRET was seen at the Rogers Neck Bridge on Route 209 in
Phippsburg on April 25.

 

A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER visited a feeder in North Haven on North Haven
Island on April 26. 

 

Two LAUGHING GULLS were near the 26 Buoy off North Haven Island on April
25.

 

Also on North Haven Island, a report of a late NORTHERN SHRIKE was
received on April 29.

 

Birds on Monhegan Island this week included a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON,
EVENING GROSBEAKS, a nesting AMERICAN WOODCOCK, a BLUE-WINGED TEAL, two
INDIGO BUNTINGS and a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER on April 28.

 

NORTHERN GANNETS continue to be seen off Monhegan migrating north.

 

Kennebec Valley (Augusta-Waterville-Skowhegan)

 

A returning pair of LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES was first noticed at Vaughan
Woods in Hallowell on April 25 and continued through May 2.  

 

A male COMMON EIDER was found last week on the Kennebec River in
Skowhegan and continues as of May 1.

 

Five VIRGINIA RAILS were detected at the Goodwill-Hinckley School farm
pond in Hinckley on April 26.

 

A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK came to feeders in Benton on April 29.  The
same yard hosted a lingering BOHEMIAN WAXWING on May 1.

 

Highlights from the Pine Tree State Arboretum in Augusta on May 2
included BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, HOUSE
WREN, two WILSON'S SNIPE, three VIRGINIA RAILS and an EVENING GROSBEAK
flyover.

 

Central - Bangor

 

A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was found stripping bark on the north side of
Pushaw Lake in Hudson on May 2.

 

A third MERLIN was seen on April 27 flying with the pair of MERLINS
which has been frequenting Jefferson Street in Bangor.

 

Two SANDHILL CRANES were reported flying over Fountain Street in Bangor
on April 26.

 

Western Mountains

 

A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was in Wilton.

 

Downeast

 

Several LAUGHING GULLS arrived on Mt. Desert Island on April 26.

 

Birds at Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge included early returning
WHIP-POOR-WILLS and 2 NORTHERN SHOVELERS on April 25.

 

Northern Maine- Aroostook

An AMERICAN BITTERN arrived in Chapman on the April 26.

 

A lingering ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was hunting over fields in Washburn on the
April 26.

 

A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was at Lake Josephine on April 26.

 

A flock of six RUSTY BLACKBIRDS was an unusual find in Washburn on the
April 26.

 

COMMON REDPOLLS and EVENING GROSBEAKS continue at feeders in several
locations.
