Of Special Note
Arriving this week were AMERICAN BITTERN, GREEN HERON, BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVER, LEAST SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, CHIMNEY SWIFT,
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, BANK SWALLOW, BROWN THRASHER, LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSH, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, INDIGO BUNTING, EASTERN TOWHEE, and
FIELD, WHITE-CROWNED and VESPER SPARROWS.
Noteworthy finds this week included BLACK VULTURE, AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHER, UPLAND SANDPIPER, AMERICAN PIPIT, CASPIAN TERN,
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, and HOODED WARBLER.
York County
Five AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were seen on April 20, one behind Hattie's
at Biddeford Pool and four flying over Vaughn's Island in Kennebunkport.
Four BANK SWALLOWS were spotted in over the Saco River at Saco Island on
April 23.
Seen on April 24 at Kennebunk Plains were three UPLAND SANDPIPERS, 42
FIELD SPARROWS and 12 VESPER SPARROWS.
A BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was in the marsh at Biddeford Pool on April 21.
A NORTHERN SHOVELER was seen on the Saco River in North Fryeburg on
April 20.
Scarborough Marsh
A CASPIAN TERN and four AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were seen at Pine Point
on April 20.
A BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was at the end of Dunstan Landing Road on April
20.
Eleven LITTLE BLUE HERONS along with four NORTHERN SHOVELERS were behind
the Pelreco building at the end of Pine Point Road on April 22.
A PECTORAL SANDPIPER and two LEAST SANDPIPERS were found off the Eastern
Road Trail on April 24.
Greater Portland
A RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD arrived in Scarborough on April 21.
An AMERICAN PIPIT flew over Gilsland Farm in Falmouth on April 23.
A GREEN HERON was at the ponds in Evergreen Cemetery in Portland on
April 25.
A LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH was seen off Hurricane Road in West Falmouth on
April 20.
A BLACK VULTURE on April 19 highlighted a big week for the hawk watch at
Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal. BROAD-WINGED (617) and
SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS (250) led the count from April 19 through April 23
with good numbers of OSPREY and AMERICAN KESTRELS as well. An INDIGO
BUNTING on April 21 and two tardy BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on April 24 were the
outstanding non-raptors at the hawk watch.
Midcoast
The mouth of the Abagadasset River in Bowdoinham continued to host 26
LESSER SCAUP through April 22.
A BROWN THRASHER was spotted on Chewonki Neck near Wiscasset on April
22.
An "Ipswich" SAVANNAH SPARROW was along the beach grass at Seawall Beach
and a drake GADWALL was on the Sprague River marsh in Phippsburg on
April 23.
An adult male HOODED WARBLER was in St. George on April 21 foraging low
at the edge of a granite quarry. It has not been reported since.
On April 21, Green Point Farm Wildlife Management Area in Dresden hosted
an impressive concentration of 110 SAVANNAH SPARROWS and a FISH CROW.
Kennebec Valley (Augusta-Waterville)
A female ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was at a feeder in Clinton on April 22.
A GLOSSY IBIS was spotted in Clinton and in Norridgewock.
Two VESPER SPARROWS were at the end of Lincoln Ave in Gardiner April 21.
Central - Bangor
An AMERICAN BITTERN was calling from Pushaw Lake in Old Town on April
21.
Other birds at Pushaw Lake included 30 COMMON LOONS.
A RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD arrived in Plymouth on April 20.
Western Mountains
Two BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were photographed at the north end of
Flagstaff Lake on April 23. Other birds in the Flagstaff Lake area
included a ROUGH GROUSE, four BOREAL CHICKADEES, four SWAMP SPARROWS,
four HERMIT THRUSHES, several PALM WARBLERS, a GRAY JAY, several
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER pairs and many NORTHERN FLICKERS, WINTER WRENS,
RUBY-CROWNED and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, and PURPLE FINCHES.
A BROWN THRASHER was singing at Kiwanis Park in Dover-Foxcroft on April
24.
Penobscot Bay
A pair of NORTHERN SHOVELERS was seen near the Deer Isle causeway on
April 23.
A VESPER SPARROW was in Sedgwick on April 20.
Downeast
A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen in Surry on April 23.
A BLUE-WINGED TEAL was in Machias on April 21.
Gulf of Maine
Spotted on April 22 and 23, from the NOAA fisheries research ship
Albatross IV between Mt. Desert Rock and Matinicus Rock were a winter
plumage COMMON MURRE, two RAZORBILLS, and many strings of NORTHERN
GANNETS.
On April 24 a WHITE-THROATED and a SAVANNAH SPARROW landed and spent
time onboard the Albatross IV, 50 miles off Casco Bay.
Northern Maine- Aroostook
Several WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were among 50 sparrows of seven species
under feeders in a Woodland yard on April 20.
An impressive flock of 300 DARK-EYED JUNCOS was in Woodland.
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was in Washburn.
Three NORTHERN CARDINALS were seen in Houlton.
