WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Monday March
10, 2008.
The ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen both Friday and
Sunday in the tall tree in the corner of the parking
lot behind 1666 Main Street in Springfield. A young
COOPER’S HAWK also hangs out in this tree, and a
PEREGRINE FALCON was seen flying overhead.
At Forest Park in Springfield there were 7 RING-
NECKED DUCKS, a GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 17 HOODED
MERGANSERS, and a CANVASBACK.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen today in Sheffield near
Bartholomew’s Cobble.
Flocks of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS have been reported,
including 110 birds on Main Street in Cummington, 30
in the Moran Wildlife Management Area in Windsor, 97
on the campus of Williams College in Williamstown, 23
in Quabbin Park at the Quabbin Reservoir, 15 in
Pittsfield, and 4 with a flock of 12 CEDAR WAXWINGS
by the Campus Pond at the University of Massachusetts
in Amherst.
A HOARY REDPOLL has been visiting a feeder on Portyla
Cross Road in Sunderland, 3 KILLDEER were in
Hatfield, 40 TURKEY VULTURES were at a roost in
Greenfield, 2 SNOW GEESE and a NORTHERN SHRIKE were
in Northampton, and 50 PINE SISKINS were coming to a
feeder in Shutesbury.
Seen in Longmeadow over the weekend were 15 WOOD
DUCKS, 4 NORTHERN PINTAILS, an AMERICAN WIGEON, 7
GREEN-WINGED TEAL, a CANVASBACK, a GREAT BLUE HERON,
and a MERLIN.
Seen in Hadley were a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 3 WOOD
DUCKS, 10 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 5 RING-NECKED DUCKS, a
NORTHERN SHRIKE, and 340 SNOW BUNTINGS.
On Cheshire Lake in Cheshire there were 9 RING-NECKED
DUCKS, 3 CANVASBACKS, and 2 BUFFLEHEADS.
Observed in Turners Falls were a GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 4
RING-NECKED DUCKS, 3 CANVASBACKS, a PIED-BILLED
GREBE, an ICELAND GULL, a GLAUCOUS GULL, and 12 PINE
GROSBEAKS.
