EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS -
This is the Voice of Audubon for Friday, March 7.
The sounds of early Spring are in the air with reports of displaying
AMERICAN
WOODCOCKS in Falmouth, West Barnstable, Newton, Marblehead, and
Worcester, singing NORTHERN SHRIKES in Lexington and Woburn,
and calling KILLDEER in Plymouth.
The SLATY-BACKED GULL was seen at Niles Pond in Gloucester on
Monday as was the TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in the Country Club Lane
area of Rockport.
In Marshfield, there were 24 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 1 TURKEY VULTURE,
2 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 6 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS, 2 KILLDEER, and 25 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS at the Daniel
Webster Wildlife Sanctuary. At the nearby Daniel Webster Estate,
there were
20 GADWALL, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 21 RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRDS, and 30 COMMON GRACKLES.
In Falmouth, reports included 10 WOOD DUCKS, 4 GADWALL, 1 EURASIAN
and 9 AMERICAN WIGEONS, 9 CANVASBACKS, 4 REDHEADS, 375
GREATER and 27 LESSER SCAUP, and 28 RUDDY DUCKS. In Bourne,
there were 4 GADWALL, 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS, and 65 RING-NECKED
DUCKS. In Barnstable, reports included 175 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 6
LESSER SCAUP, a PIED-BILLED GREBE, and a BLACK-HEADED GULL.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Hyannis. A report from Cockeast
Pond in Westport noted 30 CANVASBACKS, 150 AMERICAN WIGEON,
and 12 AMERICAN COOTS.
Reports from outer Cape Cod included a PIED-BILLED GREBE and a
EURASIAN WIGEON in Herring Pond, 2 REDHEADS on Pilgrim Lake,
a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE at the bridge on Chequessett Neck Road in
Wellfleet, 12 COMMON AND 2 HOARY REDPOLLS at the Wellfleet
Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, and 15 PINE SISKINS in South Orleans.
In the Plum Island/Newburyport area, reports included 2 WOOD DUCKS,
9 AMERICAN WIGEON, 123 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 44 GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, 6 BALD EAGLES, 9 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS, 3 ICELAND and one LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, a
SHORT-EARED OWL, 3 KILLDEER, 110 SANDERLINGS, 3 COMMON
RAVENS, 17 HORNED LARKS, 2 TUFTED TITMICE, 5 LAPLAND
LONGSPURS, 31 SNOW BUNTINGS, and 11 COMMON GRACKLES.
A singing PINE WARBLER was reported in Newbury.
Miscellaneous reports included FOX SPARROWS in Bradford and Woburn,
one BALD EAGLE in West Brookfield and 5 in Sudbury, a GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at Nine Acre Corner in Concord, NORTHERN
SHRIKES in Falmouth, Carlisle, and Wenham, an AMERICAN KESTREL
in Boston, an EASTERN PHOEBE in Topsfield, and 15 PINE GROSBEAKS
and 50 CEDAR WAXWINGS at the commuter rail station in Lincoln.
