Alert for Tuesday, March 18, 11:30 pm update. Compiled and transcribed by
David Allinson.

RARE BIRD ALERT: BRAMBLING (OUT OF TOWN)
RUSTY BLACKBIRD

Tuesday, March 18
There were no additional reports for a RUSTY BLACKBIRD at Somenos Marsh in
Duncan. Updates would be appreciated.

Monday, March 17
OUT OF TOWN Rare Bird Alert - A BRAMBLING at feeders in Belcarra was not
seen Monday after being present for the past week (this is at Indian Arm
near Port Moody in the Lower Mainland). Call the Vancouver Bird Alert at
(604) 737-3074 for updates.
A RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER is visiting feeders among many other birds present
at a birder-friendly property at 4655 Kerryview Drive in the Prospect Lake
area.
The first RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS have been back in the Victoria checklist since
at least March 10th with more reports coming in. Small groups of TURKEY
VULTURES are also trickling through the area.

Sunday, March 16
A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen and heard at Somenos Marsh in Duncan. The bird
was on the west side of the lake at Holmes Creek. The site is accessed off
the Trans Canada Hwy (just north of Beverly Street). Look for a yellow gate
just north of the main viewing boardwalk area near some gravel parking.
The first CLIFF SWALLOW report of the spring came today from Swan Lake
Nature Sanctuary in Saanich.

Saturday, March 15
At the Cowichan Bay estuary just south of Duncan were a GREAT HORNED OWL and
2 NORTHERN SHRIKES. The owl was seen perched in a tree right out in the
middle of the estuary on the north side.

Friday, March 14
A RUDDY DUCK and a NORTHERN HARRIER were both observed at Swan Lake in
Saanich.

Wednesday, March 12
A NORTHERN SHRIKE and 4 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS were in the Martindale Valley of
Central Saanich.

The VNHS Saturday Birding Group will be going to Devonian Park off William
Head Road in Metchosin. Meet at 8:00am. They will also be going to part of
the Galloping Goose and Blinkhorn Lake, time permitting.
