RUSTY BLACKBIRD
NORTHERN SHRIKE
Sunday, March 16th
A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen and heard at Somenos Marsh in Duncan. The bird
was on the west side of the lake at Holmes Creek. The site is accessed off
the Trans Canada Hwy (just north of Beverly Street). Look for a yellow gate
just north of the main viewing boardwalk area near some gravel parking.
The first CLIFF SWALLOW report of the spring came today from Swan Lake
Nature Sanctuary in Saanich.
Saturday, March 15th
At the Cowichan Bay estuary just south of Duncan were a GREAT HORNED OWL and
2 NORTHERN SHRIKES. The owl was seen perched in a tree right out in the
middle of the estuary on the north side.
Friday, March 14th
A RUDDY DUCK and a NORTHERN HARRIER were both observed at Swan Lake in
Saanich.
Wednesday, March 12th
A NORTHERN SHRIKE and 4 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS were in the Martindale Valley of
Central Saanich.
Tuesday, March 11th
A GLAUCOUS GULL was reported from the Cordova Bay Golf Course in Saanich.
3 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS continue to be observed from the south side of Swan
Lake near a trail that goes up to Saanich Municipal Hall. These birds have
now been present since early December!
A wintering TOWNSEND'S WARBLER was again reported from 905 Dunn Ave near
Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary in Saanich.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE continues at Beaver Point Provincial Park on Salt Spring
Island.
An adult GOLDEN EAGLE was over the Turnstone development of Happy Valley in
Langford.
To report bird sightings of interest please leave your name and telephone
number as well as the details of your sighting at the end of this greeting.
For information about Victoria birding or to summon birders to confirm a
rare bird, please call either Barbara Begg at 656-5296, or me David Allinson
at 391-1786. Photos of rare or unusual birds are appreciated and may be sent
to rba2 AT vicnhs.bc.ca .
Birders are also reminded to obtain a copy of the VNHS's "Victoria and
Southeastern Vancouver Island Checklist of Birds" to review not only the
status of rare species, but also the calendar for both our uncommon and
common birds. Copies of the checklist are usually available at Swan Lake
Nature Sanctuary, Goldstream Provincial Park's Nature House, and Habitat
Acquisition Trust's office. They are also available at most VNHS meetings.
While this tape posts many reports for species that may not be considered
rare, the operators endeavour to transcribe and post MOST reports that come
in. However, whether or not the RBA operator chooses to include your report,
please note that ALL sightings are recorded for posterity. They are
forwarded to the editors of the VNHS's Annual Bird Report as well as to
assist regional compilers for the American Birding Association's "North
American Birds" publication.
For more information, please visit the Victoria Natural History Society's
website at www.vicnhs.bc.ca .
Good birding and wishing you lifers all!
