Alert for Monday, March 10, 10:30 pm update. Compiled and transcribed by

Special Note: the annual herring spawn continues in the Parksville-Qualicum
Bay area, attracting large numbers of gulls, Brant, sea ducks, eagles,
shorebirds, and also marine mammals. This is a great time of year to
experience this truly remarkable natural spectacle.
Monday, March 10th
A VIRGINIA RAIL was heard calling at Rithet's Bog off Chatterton Way in
Saanich.
At the Dinsdale Farm off Cowichan Bay Road south of Duncan, highlights
included a SHORT-EARED OWL, a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS, a
MERLIN, and 200 AMERICAN PIPITS.
Saturday, March 8th
In the early morning hours a BARN OWL was heard again in the Happy Valley
area of Langford.
2 singing HUTTON'S VIREOS were along the Happy Valley section of the
Galloping Goose in Langford. Another HUTTON'S VIREO as well as a HERMIT
THRUSH were reported from Observatory Hill in Saanich.
A VicNHS field trip to the Parksville-Qualicum Bay area tallied 70 species.
Friday, March 7th
An adult BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE was seen from the bow of the 'MV COHO' (Port
Angeles ferry). The bird was amongst a flock of Mew and California Gulls
about 3km south of the Ogden Point Breakwater. During the same day
round-trip voyage, out in Juan de Fuca Strait 3 BRANT, 80 RHINOCEROS
AUKLETS, and 2 ANCIENT MURRELETS were also of interest.
Thursday, March 6th
A YELLOW-BILLED LOON was seen just off Ogden Point along the Victoria
waterfront (foot of Dallas Road).
Tuesday, March 4th
2 RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKERS were heard drumming at McKenzie Bight in
Gowlland-Tod Provincial Park in the Highlands (access off Ross-Durrance
Road). Nearby, 6 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE were in Squally Reach-Saanich Inlet.
Monday, March 3rd
A female PINE GROSBEAK briefly visited a yard in the Ardmore area of North
Saanich. A wintering TOWNSEND'S WARBLER also continues here.
A SORA was observed at the south end of the floating bridge at Swan Lake
Nature Sanctuary in Saanich.
