This is the Upper Cook Inlet (UCI) bird report updated on Monday,
September 9th, sponsored by the Anchorage Audubon Society. To skip the
report and leave a message press the # key now.

While the calender, and my son, remind me it is still summer, all but a
few of the shorebirds that regularly migrate through the UCI, as well as
many of the local breeding migrant songbirds, in particular the
flycatchers, swallows and warbler, have already departed our region.
However, there are a good number of migrants still present locally,
including a broad variety of waterbirds, raptors, gulls, thrushes and
sparrows.

Surveys of lakes on Elmendorf Air Force Base on August 28th produced 2
Pacific Loons and 8 Common Loons. On September 1st, over 10 Pacific
Loons and 6 Common Loons were counted on the Nancy Lake Recreational
Area canoe trail. And in Anchorage, at least 2 Horned Grebes and 6
Red-necked Grebes were seen on the 6th on Lake Spenard.

Between the 7th and 8th, 154 raptors involving 10 species were counted
migrating past MP 85.3 of the Glenn Highway. About two-thirds of the
total involved Harlan's Red-tailed Hawks, Sharp-shinned Hawks and Bald
Eagles. But also seen were 8 Osprey, 4 Golden Eagles, 3 Northern
Harriers, a Northern Goshawk, 4 Rough-legged Hawks, 2 Merlin and 4
Peregrine Falcons. In the Anchorage area, several Sharp-shinned Hawks
and Northern Harriers were reported along the coast in early September.
And on the 7th, a Gyrfalcon was seen near the mouth of Ship Creek, and
an adult Peregrine Falcon was perched on the radio tower at Westchester
Lagoon.

About 12 Pectoral Sandpipers and eight Greater Yellowlegs were found on
the tidal flats west of the airport on the 1st and 2nd. At least 4
Greater Yellowlegs were also still present on the mudflats off
Westchester Lagoon to at least the 7th.

Several Bonaparte's Gulls were seen on the 7th along the coast between
Westchester Lagoon and Ship Creek. And a juvenile Thayer's Gull was
also seen on the 7th at the mouth of Ship Creek.

Finally, two adult Townsend's Solitaires were seen at MP 85.3 of the
Glenn Highway on the 8th. And a flock of over 10 Hermit Thrushes was
seen on the 7th along lower Fish Creek near end of Iona Street.

You may now leave your report after the tone; please include the date
and place of observation, as well as your name and telephone number. In
particular, it is the time of year when reports of any flycatchers,
swallows or warbler species not already mentioned herein would be of
special interest.
