SIGHTINGS FOR MONDAY JUN 1:
GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW: seen by John Corbin north of Irricana in a
shelterbelt on his property by the Rosebud River on RR 264 5 kms north of
Irricana 403-935-4340
RED KNOT: Richard Clarke at the south end of Frank Lake
CAPE MAY WARBLER: Joel Duncan by the pumphouses on the north side of Hay
Meadow near Mt. Lorette in Kananaskis Country.
SIGHTINGS FOR MAY 30 AND 31:
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW: near Airdrie, seen by Destin Skauge on Calgary May
Species Count
BOBOLINK: west of Longview found by Bob Lefebre
BARRED OWL: found on Gorge Creek Trail by Colin Young
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER: Rob Worona on 658 Ave south of Frank Lake
SHORT-EARED OWL: Rob Worona at Hwy 540-22 junction
RED KNOT: Rob Worona near Brant
PURPLE MARTIN: approximately 20 reported by Chris & Ken Havard at the site
in the subdivision east of Hwy 1 near Chestermere Lake
GREAT EGRET: reported near the James River northwest of Sundre this past
weekend. No other details.
All but the last of these sightings were reported on a preliminary basis by
participants on the Calgary May Species Count. Brian Elder 403-374-1576 was
count compiler.
The next scheduled update of the bird alert is on Mon Jun 8.
BIRD STUDY GROUP
Bird Study Group meets 1st Wednesday of the month, Room 211, BioSciences
Building, U of C except June through August when field trips replace the

Sibbald Creek. Meet at Golf Course entrance on Hwy #68, about 1 km south of

Tue Jun 9, 6:30pm: Bird Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, E end of 9 Av SE. Leader,

Sun Jun 14, Bird Purple Springs (Taber) area for rare grassland species
(Baird's/Grasshopper Sparrows, Longspurs, etc.). Call Calgary leader Eric
Tull, 403-295-0830, for car-pooling. Local leader, Lloyd Bennett, Taber,
403-223-0456. Directions to Lloyd's place: From Taber, go 4 miles E on Hwy
3. Turn N at the big green Yiterra (formerly Agricore) building for 3.5
miles (exactly 1/2 mile past the second intersection). Lloyd's house is on
the E, over 200 m from the road. There is a round slough on the W side of
the road & a blue sign - 104043, Range Road 160. Meet at his place at 2pm.

Hwy 8, then left on 69 St SW into Discovery Ridge. Continue straight at

3 km radius in Calgary. Meet at Stanley Park, 42 Av SW, two blocks W of

Sun Jun 28, 9:30am: Tour of the private Canadian Rocky Mountain Ranch in the
foothills southwest of Calgary to see Bison and Elk, including young, up
close. Bring lunch! Optional unguided hillside nature walk after lunch. Meet
at Anderson LRT Stn (Macleod Tr), S of pedestrian overpass, to carpool.

Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is a City of Calgary Natural Area. Staff offers
information, courses and field trips relating to natural history. For
information, call 311 during office hours and ask for the Inglewood Bird
Sanctuary.
