Browser Bugs and Workarounds
Although The Virtual Birder uses HTML 3.0 compliant pages
invariably there are browsers that have difficulty with one or more
areas of the site. This page lists the known bugs for
the most popular browsers and provides suggestions on how to
work around them.
Recommended Browsers
- Windows
- Netscape Navigator 3.0, Netscape Navigator 4.0
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0
- Macintosh
- Netscape Navigator 3.0, Netscape Navigator 4.03
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0
Browsers to Avoid
- Windows
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 and below
- Macintosh
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0
- Netscape Navigator 4.01 (4.03 is recommended)
- Browser:
- AOL Integrated Web Browser for Windows
- Description of problem:
- JPEG images appear fuzzy.
- Workaround:
- Go to 'User Preferences' and make sure that 'Compressed Graphics'
are not selected under 'Graphics'. Alternatively you can use
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or Netscape Navigator 3.0 or better outside
of the AOL Environment.
- Browser:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 for Macintosh
- Description of problem:
- Browser crashes (sometimes taking the MacOS with it) when viewing
pages with the left-hand navigation border.
- Workaround:
- Use Netscape Navigator 3.0 or better, or go back to using Internet Explorer 3.0.
- Browser:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or below for Windows
- Description of problem:
- Browser locks up (sometime taking Windows with it) while exploring a virtual tour.
- Workaround:
- The browser has a memory leak which consumes RAM until there is no more
and then bites the dust. Upgrade to IE 4.0 or switch to Netscape Navigator 3.0
or better.
- Browser:
- Netscape Navigator 4.01 for Macintosh
- Description of problem:
- Clicking on a spotlighted bird in the virtual tour
returns status message 'Sorry, there is nothing to click on there.'
- Workaround:
- Upgrade to Netscape Navigator 4.03 or better.
