Subject: Repeating messages
From: Jane Stein <janestein(AT)mediaone.net>
Date: 1 Feb 2002 2:29am
Today's digest was a grand total of 97K. The message from the person
who fell for the hoax was somehow repeated *17* times. Then two people
responded to that message, *each of whom included all 17 iterations* of
the original in their responses. So three folks accounted for 51
repetitions of this same message.
Please let's be a little more attentive to what we're doing!

Subject: virus is a HOAX
From: DeboClark(AT)aol.com

----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
THIS IS A HOAX. Do NOT follow those directions. The file you are directed
to remove is actually a small file that Windows uses to operate. If you
delete this file you will, all by yourself, disable your computer.
There are many good sites to help you sort fact from fiction and the site
referencing this particular hoax is as follows:
http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blsulfnbk.htm
It's bad enough when there are REAL viruses around but when someone figures
out how to dupe folks into disabling their own computers it is a sad day.
A friend forwarded the following tip for those who use Outlook Express and
who have had problems with viruses replicating themselves through that
tempting and easy path:
for those REAL virii that promote them-
selves via Outlook Express Address Book, make that
forward procedure fail every time -- create a new user in
your address book as: 0000@0000 (All zero's except for
the ampersand sign.) It will be the FIRST address in your
Address Book then. If a virus attempts to forward itself to
person's in your address book it will fail! Promise! Because
the very first address in a phoney!!
I don't use Outlook Express so I cannot vouch for the method, but it
certainly doesn't cost anything, won't affect your computer or the mail
program, and is easy to do. Free insurance - if it works.

This was a monumental mistake on my part. Sorry for all the disruption it
caused, and the frustration I am sure all of you experienced. Mary

Could yesterday's VTBIRD digest, with it's endless string of bogus virus
warnings serve as an exemplar of why a little more editing might be
appropriate in the new VTBIRD? Fight digi-dreck!

Wow! Now I see why the new VTBIRD list server has a rule: NO VIRUS REPORTS.
Especially when they are hoaxes, like this one!
And especially when people refuse to learn how to delete extraneous junk
from forwarded messages.
And especially when those forwarded messages are chain-letter virus hoaxes.
But I sure want to add a "me too" to Bryan Pfeiffer's message:
> My boundless thanks go to Bob Johnson for his foresight and perseverance in
> the establishment of VTBIRD. You've brought us all closer to birds -- and
> to one another.
> See you all on the UVM server.

Subject: Message from the new List Owner
From: Ernie Buford <ebuford(AT)zoo.uvm.edu>
Date: 1 Feb 2002 12:51pm
Hello VT birders,
It is a great pleasure and priviledge to take over for
Bob Johnson as keeper of the VTBIRD list. I add my thanks
to those who have already expressed their appreciation
to Bob for starting the list and giving us several years
of dedicated service.
I am pleased to see that folks are finding their way over
to the new list. Because UVM uses different software,
you will notice some changes in how you interact with the
list. I have no control over the choice of software. I
have tried my best to provide information that will help
ease the transition, but please feel free to contact me
if you have problems getting started. Thank you for
your patience during the transition!
You will also notice more explicit guidelines for using
the list. I gave a lot of thought and consideration to
these guidelines. They are derived from those used by
other bird lists and cover some of the topics that have
distracted many VTBIRD users in the past. It is not my
intention to be heavy-handed, but I will make an effort
to see that we stick to the topic and maintain a sense
of community. This week's virus hoax is a good example
of how these guidelines may improve our forum.
So, welcome to the new list. I don't expect it will
change drastically, and I hope you find that it only
changes for the better!
Sincerely yours,
Ernie Buford
