Contrar......to Wayne's apologies for making his weaver possibility
public. I appreciate his process, observations and opinion. I think it
helps all of us expand and learn about birds. Thanks for including us.
Enjoyed a conversation between a male and female great horned owl in a
nearby pine forest plot. It was about 4pm, on Jan 15.

Subject: Overwintering Killdeer
From: frederick and chris pratt <pipit(AT)wcvt.com>
Date: 17 Jan 2002 1:55pm
Fearful lest it become immersed in a poetic exchange and definitely in
need of a change of scenery, Team Pipit ventured forth for an
afternoon's birding on Wednesday, January 16. Results weren't bad and
included the only January report of Killdeer in Vermont that we are
aware of!
(1) Killdeer : shoreline, just south of Long
Point, Ferrisburgh
(7) Hooded Merganser shoreline, just south of Long Point,
Ferrisburgh
(54) Bufflehead Converse Bay, Charlotte
(2) Bald Eagle in flight off Long Point,.
Ferrisburgh (one immature, one adult)
(1) Cooper's Hawk Long Point Road, Ferrisburgh (an
adult female)
(1) Am. Kestrel Jersey Street, Addison (an adult
male)
In the Dead Creek and Bridport area we found about 10 Rough-legged Hawks
(including 3 dark morphs), a couple of Northern Harriers, the usual
Red-tailed Hawks and a single Sharp-shinned Hawk. Along Nortontown Road
there were just a few Horned Larks, one Snow Bunting and 2-3 Common
Redpolls. Another small group of redpolls was along Basin Harbor Road
in Bridport

Subject: Common Mergs
From: Oldfossil(AT)webtv.net (Sherry Mahady)
Date: 17 Jan 2002 7:59pm
Along with the regular Mallards and 100+/- Canada Geese, there was a
flock of well more than 500 Common Mergansers in Malletts Bay,
Colchester, around noon today. What I don't understand is that 75-80%
of them were males. (Does anyone have any insight about this?)
Considering the odds, it's no wonder the boys were all putting on quite
a show of displaying--throwing their heads back so far and fast that
it's a wonder they didn't break their necks, puffing out their chests as
they practically stood on the surface with their tails in the water.
The females were beseiged; each literally surrounded by several males
showing off.
