[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Mystery bird photos, sand bar clarification, and a camera Q From: BoB LeSuer <rlesuer(AT)zoo.uvm.edu> Date: 14 Jan 2002 8:54am Hi all, I finally got the pictures of my french mystery bird developed, scanned, and thrown on the web (nothing special by way of web site design) but if you are interested in helping me out, head over to www.uvm.edu/~rlesuer/mbird Regarding the sitings at the sand bar. Is a scope required for bird observation or can us poor birders get a gimpse at a few winter water fowl as well? It's impossible to get reasonable camera information from the web, and I know there are some photographic wonders here in vtbird-land. Regardless, let me apologize for the off-topic question. If one adds a 2x tele-extender to a 1:2 close-up lens, does the lens now become a macro (1:1) or is it still closeup (1:1.5)? Thanks, BoB

Indeed a good way to brighten a gray morning. Holly F. Hungerford Vt. Public Television 88 Ethan Allen Ave. Colchester, VT 05446 (802) 655-8049 hhungerford(AT)vpt.org

Some waterfowl were close enough to view with binoculars, but a scope was necessary to have much hope of seeing the rarities. Even with my scope (20x-60x eyepiece) I think I would have missed the Redheads and Canvasback tucked into the scaup flock. Fortunately, Ted was on hand with his high-powered optics, which provided nice views of this tightly-packed group of ducks. He even read the band on one of the Bald Eagles as it tore into a big Bowfin out on the ice. Also... we saw a Great Blue Heron on the refuge (I recall this species was not on Jim's list from Saturday). ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Ernie Buford School of Natural Resources University of Vermont Burlington, VT 05405 ebuford(AT)zoo.uvm.edu _/_ _/_ _/_ \ _/_ \ _/_ \ \ \
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Question: source for fold down eye cups? From: GeorgeLisi(AT)cs.com Date: 14 Jan 2002 4:47pm I have a pair of old, 8x40 Bushnell's I am trying to find rubber eye cups for, with no luck so far. They don't have to be Bushnell cups, they just have to fit. If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate hearing from them off-list. Thanks! George Lisi, Lincoln

From: "Roy Pilcher" <shamwari.1(AT)netzero.net> Date: 14 Jan 2002 6:26pm George, I don't know if you wear glasses or not but it sounds like you do. I also have glasses and my solution was to cut the rubber at the fold, smooth it down with a nail file and presto it works just great!
