On Sunday 1/6 while visiting my sister on Redmond Road in Williston, my =
attention was drawn to a drumming woodpecker. I got my binoculars and =
it was a hairy, but then I heard a very different raspy trill-like noise =
from a stand of black locust trees. There were about 30 waxwings above =
my head. I looked up to very gray waxwings and clearly saw the russet =
vent! It was a very exciting moment to realize they were Bohemian =
Waxwings! And then off they flew before I got a chance to alert the =
household! Also, there are often pileated woodpecker in the old maples =
along this road. Redmond Road is the dump road near the back entrance =
to IBM. Audrey Werner, usually from Pownal, VT much further south! =
Also on 12/28 and 12/29 in Pownal at my feeder I had Common Redpoll for =
the first time this feeder season.

Subject: owl sketches and a bird quiz
From: BoB LeSuer <rlesuer(AT)zoo.uvm.edu>
Date: 7 Jan 2002 12:14pm
Hi all,
First, I am looking for a sketch of an owl (preferably barred or great
grey "ish") that would be a suitable model for use in making some custom
jewelry. Ideally it would be something that could be done on an earring
size but a small pin/brooch is a possibility as well. Any suggestions
would be welcome.
Second, I need help from those of you who might have some
international birding experience. My wife and I spent the Christmas
holiday in France. While it is ... um ... challenging to bird with
binos in one hand and a 1989 Bordeaux in the other, we did get a chance
to see some new birds. One has eluded all of our channels of
identification. I don't have pictures yet (The one-hour Ritz
development is ONLY taking 95 hours this time!!!). We were in Brittany
(northwest France) and Rozenn's parents had several platform and ground
feeding stations with an array of seed, suet and bread. One bird which
ate both at the platform and on the ground was a yellow bird which had
the body of an oriole. The only oriole we know of to inhabit this
region is the great oriole which has a yellow body, a scarlet beak,
scarlet eyes and black wings. This bird had the scarlet beak and eyes,
however the rest of the coloration was quite different. The wings were
specaled black and yellow and the head was a dark rufous color. The
bird was quite skitterish and we didn't get great pictures of it, but
I'll have a couple fotos up by the end of the week. Anyone that can
lead to some birding resources that might be helpful in identifying this
bird would be of great assistance to us.
Thanks all
BoB

Merrie, what a lovely variety of visitors you have. Thank you so much for
sharing them with the rest of us. Isn't it wonderful to see so much
without leaving home?
