Subject: Waterfront Snowy Owl
A report that the snowy owl at the Burlington waterfront died. I have
been looking at the owl every few days. It was alive and sitting on the
causeway by the Coast Guard Station on Fri, Dec 21. When we went to
look on Sat., the owl appeared lifeless on the rocks. I called the
Coast Guard Station-they had seen the owl previously but were unaware
that it was dead. Fortunately, the Coast Guard picked up the bird and
are holding it for a game warden to look at it the Wed. after
Christmas. There is no apparent cause of death. Sad news as it was a
beautiful bird and a joy to see.

My feeders in Poultney had a grackle and a goldfinch in full breeding
plumage today. Signs of summer on the first day of the year?
I have attached a picture of the goldfinch.

Maybe the guy just dropped in from Florida, didn't hear about Buffalo. Sure
is a strange way to begin the New Year, though. I'd love to have seen that
at my feeder.
A suggestion: rather than sending photos as attachments, it would be a good
idea to use a website to post the photo and then just send the link to the
list. There are still several free photo-hosting sites for folks who don't
have a website. I use Village Photos. The initial interface is wierd, but
uploading is simple. I find it works for short-term posting of the
occasional photo for purposes like this.

There are other free photo hosting sites, too, I just happen to have found
that one when I wanted to do a quick post of the moose that walked through
my camp one day while I was, er, showering.

Very interesting, Mike, because we looked out this morning and also saw a
male goldfinch clearly on the way to molting out to summer plumage
(although not as far along as this one).

As if to answer my own question from a few days ago and perhaps give me
a New Years gift a PREGRINE FALCON gave me quite a treat as it soared a
bit above a large flock of starlings only to turn a shoulder tuck and
dive right through the flock at incredible speed. I saw it pull out and
head down the hill(it was over the UVM green) chasing the flock. Not
sure if it got one or not but I got what I wanted.(a late christmas
birding present) :)
Happy Birding!!! and happy new year

A nice start to the new year on Bixby Hill in Essex, among the usual
Chickadees, Titmouses etc. we had a Hermit Thrush eating ripe
winterberries, Pine Grosbeaks high in the Maples, a White Throated
Sparrow in the shrubs, and a visiting flock of Redpolls.
The Snowy Owl was still at the Sandbar, as well as the Tundra Swans,
Pintails, Mallards etc.
Happy Birding in '02

WELCOME TO VTBIRD
VTBIRD is an internet email discussion group for those interested in birding
in Vermont and adjacent areas. This is an UNMONITORED list, which means that
no one is monitoring messages before they are sent out to subscribers.
Therefore, contributers should keep in mind the purpose of this list and
should avoid discourteous and inappropriate messages. The VTBIRD list is
provided courtesy of the Castleton State College Communication Department.
MAILING LIST HELP FILE
Please read the list guidelines (see below) before engaging in discussion.
In addition, familiarize yourself with how the list operates, especially if
you've never participated in an Internet email discussion group before.
It's a good idea to save this message somewhere so you know how to
unsubscribe.
When dealing with a listserver, there are two types of messages, namely,
COMMANDS and POSTS. Unlike traditional listservers which require the
use of numerous email addresses, we have simplified the process by
allowing for both COMMANDS and POSTS to be sent to the same address.
COMMANDS
These e-mail messages are intended to cause some action to occur, such as
subscribing the FROM address to a mailing list. Commands are usually one or
two word phrases which should be entered in the SUBJECT field of the message.
Any other fields are ignored... it doesn't matter what you put in them.
The following commands are accepted:
subscribe
adds your e-mail address to the list of subscribers
you will then receive all posts
you are then allowed to post from that address
unsubscribe
removes your e-mail address from the list of subscribers
you will no longer receive any posts
you are no longer allowed to post
subscribe digest
switches you to digest mode
you will then receive one message per day which lists all posts
to switch back, send a "subscribe" command
digests
returns a list of digests for the past 30 days along with
instructions for retreiving them via e-mail
help
this message will be returned
POSTS
Email messages which don't match any commands are distributed to everyone on
the list.
Every time you post a message, hundreds of other people on the list receive a
copy, just as if you sent it to them personally. As a member of the list, you
will receive a copy of every message anyone else sends. On this list, only
members of the list can post to it.
To correspond directly with a person, send an email to Bob Johnson at
johnsonr(AT)sover.net or phone (802) 468-1294, Castleton State College,
Philosophy Program.
