Subject: [birders] Crane Creek Sunday
From: waynef(AT)provide.net
Date: 19 May 2008 2:14am
Crane Creek was very active today. The highlight was a Connecticut Warbler that
actually came out into decent views, and stayed around for hours.
The other highlight/lowlight was watching a Whip-poor-will, unobstructed, close
- in a hailstorm.
After the storm activity picked up again. There was one bush with four
Chestnut-sideds in it.Other interesting birds were Olive sided Flycatcher, White
Eyed and Philadelphia Vireos, Lincoln's Sparrow, Blackpoll, and Canada Warbler.
Some of the birds were low and close, others were way up there.

Subject: [birders] OT gunshots while birding
From: MiHerp(AT)comcast.net

----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Even though we are at, or slightly past, the peak of Spring Migration, it seems
like whenever I go birding, I am almost always hearing gunshots. I was at
Nayanquing Wildlife area last week for a couple of hours after work in the
Midland area. With no exageration, I heard CONSTANT repeated gunshots for the
entire time. I am sure they were gunshots as I am familiar with the sounds.
Further, whenever I bird some of my other favorite spots; Harsen's Island,
Wetzel State Recreation Area, Island Lake, Lake Erie Metro Park or Pt. Moullie,
it is virtually guaranteed that I will hear constant gun fire.
I am just wondering if anyone else has similar experiences? I keep thinking
that the Michigan Militia may be preparing for something again. Not to mention
the effect that the constant gun play may have with some of the birds.

Subject: [birders] Crane Creek trip, May 18 (Sunday)
From: "Bruce M. Bowman" <bbowman99(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 19 May 2008 12:59am
I did a Crane Creek trip Sunday and had an excellent day. My
total species count was 90. I had 23 warblers (listed below).
Some highlights were Connecticut Warbler and Olive-sided
Flycatcher at Crane Creek and a Loggerhead Shrike on Road 19,
half a mile south of Hwy 2. Another for me was a really great
look at a hovering Black Tern at Metzger Marsh. (There were
probably 20 there.) I saw a Snowy Egret at Metzger, my first
of the year--after seeing many by this time last year.

Subject: [birders] Field trip report: Magee Marsh, Sunday, May 18
From: Karen Markey <ylime(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 19 May 2008 6:14am
Our Washtenaw Audubon Society group of about 11 birders ignored dismal
weather forecasts, traveled to Northwest Ohio, and enjoyed a birdy day
at Magee Marsh, Crane Creek State Park, on Sunday, May 18. We took an
alternate route, driving Wales Road and Ohio-579, spotting Mockingbird
and Brown Thrasher long the railroad tracks, and watching Purple
Martin houses at Williston.
We parked at Magee at 7:45 am, and joined many other birders scanning
the sun-warmed trees in the parking lot which were loaded with birds.
When we exited the boardwalk for an early lunch, we joined a large
group watching a singing CONNECTICUT WARBLER between the parking lot
and wood margin. Despite mobbing by a crowd of birders, photographers,
and dog, and downpour of hail and heavy rain, this warbler remained in
sight for a long time. Some of us reviewed the boardwalk. Cindy
spotted an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER atop a bare branch, and we joined a
group watching a sleepy WHIP-POOR-WILL. We debated the identification
of an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, deciding its breast-streaking was key.
Others walked the beach finding Turnstone and Sanderling. We finished
the day peering through the observation window at the Black Swamp
Observatory store's outdoor feeders and making purchases. We arrived
in Ann Arbor at 5:45 pm, much later than anticipated due to birdy
conditions. Despite brilliant sunshine and clouds, we stopped birding
twice because we were pelted with mini-pea-sized hail and driving rain.
Thanks to the birders who helped everyone in our group locate and
relocate the many active passerines. Extra special was our list of 22
warbler species. Here is the full list of the 75 species from the trip
(h indicates "heard only"). My regrets if I failed to record here all
species heard or seen.

I don't know all the areas mentioned, but at least in the case of=20
Island Lake Rec. Area there is an active gun range just off Grand River=20=
and in the park. This range is relatively new and recently installed a=20=
sporting clays course that goes beyond the sound buffers on the=20
original plans.
The residents of the community have been actively fighting to get the=20
sounds of the gunshots reduced to acceptable limits. They feel the=20
impact on the area parks, as well as the residents of the area who were=20=
there first, is unacceptable. A study of whether the sound is too loud=20=
is on-going by the DNR.
The Huron River as it flows through Island Lake Rec. Area is a=20
designated Natural River. When the Natural Rivers designation was=20
determined by the State in the mid-1970's, the uses of the park were=20
then to be quiet uses that supported that designation.
The community would be delighted if people who bird Island Lake and=20
Kensington and are disturbed by the constant gunfire would complain to=20=
the DNR or to Senator Valde Garcia, who has been working with both=20
sides to come to an agreement.

We have a sporting-clays range on Lake Erie about 30 miles east of
Cleveland. It is part of a Yacht Club and is adjacent (about 300 yards
away) to the Mentor Marsh, a very nice wet woods adjacent to a phragmites
marsh and the yacht club. It is annoying to listen to the guns while
birding (I am not opposed to hunting, just to noise when birding!) but the
ducks in the harbor next to the range seemed unconcerned! This was around
November and I was watching Canada Geese, Hooded Mergansers, Coots and
Mallards just floating around as though nothing were happening. I'm not
sure what this would do to spring migrants nesting in the area but the
shooting is primarily on Saturday and Sunday. I have birded this marsh in
Spring and Summer and found good numbers of all species expected. The woods
tends to dampen the sound of the shotguns. Like living next to railroad
tracks, I think the birds get used to it.
I'm not supporting the range but I don't think, in this case, it does much
damage to birding.

I don't know all the areas mentioned, but at least in the case of Island
Lake Rec. Area there is an active gun range just off Grand River and in the
park. This range is relatively new and recently installed a sporting clays
course that goes beyond the sound buffers on the original plans.
The residents of the community have been actively fighting to get the sounds
of the gunshots reduced to acceptable limits. They feel the impact on the
area parks, as well as the residents of the area who were there first, is
unacceptable. A study of whether the sound is too loud is on-going by the
DNR.
The Huron River as it flows through Island Lake Rec. Area is a designated
Natural River. When the Natural Rivers designation was determined by the
State in the mid-1970's, the uses of the park were then to be quiet uses
that supported that designation.
The community would be delighted if people who bird Island Lake and
Kensington and are disturbed by the constant gunfire would complain to the
DNR or to Senator Valde Garcia, who has been working with both sides to come
to an agreement.
A.
Chris : Most (or maybe all) of the locations you mention are SGAs (State
Game Areas) Hunting is allowed in them in at least certain areas. I think
thus trap, skeet or target shooting is allowed also. At this time or just
recently was spring Turkey season. Rabbits, Squirrels are allowed to be
taken until March 31, maybe Crows also without looking at a MI 2008 DNR
small game guide. Of course there are always a few "yahoos" out blasting
away at anything in many places that they can. Consider also farmers,
landowners can and do shoot legally on their own private property now &
then.

Birding was again pretty decent Monday morning at Nichol's Arboretum in Ann=

up this same trail most of the ways to Geddes, there were either one or tw=

Date: 19 May 2008 3:02pm
Dear Birders,
I am back from parts east and looking forward to finding some great
birds for our third Tuesday Evening Birders (TEB) tomorrow evening.
Thanks to Mike and Lathe for covering for me the last two weeks! This
Tuesday we'll meet at the Miller/Maple park and ride lot on Miller off
of M-14 at 6:00 for a 6:15 departure. Please come prepared to drive
others in your car or or to transfer to another vehicle_we love to
carpool! We'll end just before dark.
Don't forget to dress for the ever changing weather.
See you then!
This trip is sponsored by the Washtenaw Audubon Society.
Dea
PS: Remember that TEB is always a surprise _ we never know what we'll
get. I spend the day scouting the Washtenaw County area and then set
up an itinerary at about 5 PM that night, so it isn't possible for me
to tell you in advance where we'll be going. Still, take a chance and
come on out!

Hi, Susan and all,
The cockatiel is still at large. Thanks to all of those who are
looking or who have sent suggestions.
The bird is gray with a yello head and orange cheek patch. It's name
is Mandy. It recognizes its name...though I can't say it "responds" to
it. It has a vocabulary of a few simple phrases, asking "what are you
doing" and woof-whistling!
Thanks for your concern and observation. If you see the bird, please
call (734) 668-7097.
Best regards,
Lynn Nybell

I have a question about a blue jay nest in a tree. It's right next to =
my house. Today a lot of construction work was done here and I noticed =
the nest didn't have a parent sitting on it for much of the day, perhaps =
because of the noise and humans running around outside. Do you think =
the eggs would have been harmed? I don't know how old they are, but =
I've noticed a bird sitting on them for at least the last 10 days. It =
wasn't very warm today, probably 45 at around 8 a.m. (no bird on nest =
then) and maybe 60 around 2 p.m. (no bird on nest then). Tonight a bird =
is back on the nest. I was gone most of the day so I don't know if the =
lack of coverage lasted all day or was sporadic.
At least they didn't cut the tree down that the nest was in... that was =
part of the plan... but I said NOT YET!
Thanks,

Island Lake rec area has a large shooting range with several kinds of
clay-bird shooting going on. Clay-bird shooting, such as trap, sporting
clays or skeet, involves lots of fairly continuous shooting. In trap, for
example, each round consists of five shooters who shoot twenty-five times
each.
Birds do get used to the noise of shooting ranges. A few years ago I took
part in the rifle competitions held at Camp Perry in Ohio every year. With
hundreds of shooters competing, the shooting goes on all day for several
days. You would think all the birds would clear out, but not so. The range
officers had to stop the competition several times because hawks or
sometimes eagles would come and perch on the target stands. Everybody
stopped and the range safety people would drive down to the target stands in
a four-wheeler or a Jeep and try to shoo the bird away. Usually, the bird
would flap lazily down the line of target stands, lighting on one a few
stands down, then blithely observe the approach of the vehicle before lazily
flying down a few more. Finally, when the bird reached the end of the line
of target stands, it would fly back up the other way. We shooters were
getting quite a laugh out of watching the hapless safety officers driving
back and forth to try to get these birds to move on. Finally the bird would
get bored by it all and head off looking for lunch.
