Subject: [birders] Schneider Road ponds; RH woodpecker at my suet
feeder
From: waynef(AT)provide.net
Date: 18 May 2008 10:55am
At the pond on Schneider road (1/2 mile north of Pleasant lake Rd, just south of
Luckhardt) Saturday were many Dunlin, 2 Short Billed Dowitchers, and 3 Least
Sandpipers. Don't go to this spot in late afternoon on a sunny day, you'll be
looking straight into the sun.
On the east side of Schneider, just north of Luckhardt, there is a pond by a
farm that had both yellowlegs Friday afternoon.
We have been getting a pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers at our suet feeder fairly
consistently for several years now. They can chase most other birds off the
feeders, but they are shyer of people than some of the others.woodpeckers.

From: Ann Zinn <annczinn(AT)umich.edu>

For the past three nights, between 1:00 and 3:00 am, a bird has been
singing in my yard. It sounds a bit like a disorganized robin, and was
quite lovely. I suspect a thrush of some kind. Can anyone ID it from
this brief description? What bird sings in the middle of the night?

Maybe you are hearing Thoreau's night warbler, aka, ovenbird. Have

It may well have been a robin. When I was in graduate school in Cleveland many
years ago and often working until 4 or 5 AM, I was surprised to see robins
active on campus in the hours after midnight. By active, I mean running along
the lawns and singing. Part of it could have been that the campus was lighted,
but there were so many robins taking part that I began to think it must
represent some part of their normal behavior that I just would not normally have
seen.

Hello Birders,
Two Trumpeter Swans flew into the wetland at Lefurge Woods Nature Preserve
owned and managed by the Southeast Michigan Land Conservancy. This is on
the east side of Prospect between Geddes and Vreeland Roads.
By 11AM the birds were on the west side of Prospect in the wetland there.
Also of note, was an Orange-crowned Warbler near the campfire site
accessed from the gated two track along Prospect Road.

Another great day at Crane Creek. I had the pleasure of seeing a Connecticut
Warbler and took a couple of so-so pictures that I posted to my Grovestreet.
Everyone who saw it was very excited.
I also saw a Olive-sided Flycatcher and a Whip-poor-will which were also new
species for me.

Subject: [birders] Night Song
From: Ann Zinn <annczinn(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 18 May 2008 8:10pm
Hi all,
Thanks for all the suggestions.
I'm sure my bird of the lovely night song is not a wood thrush or a
robin, since I'm very familiar with both, and it's just too different,
softer, and not as regular a melodic line.
Ovenbird, mockingbird and catbird have also been suggested. I was
unable to locate a source for the ovenbird's alternative calls. If
anyone has one, please email me. It could be a mockingbird, but of the
three, we have consistently had catbirds in the yard. This might be a
possibility.
Is it possible that the bright, almost full, moon might have triggered
the calling? Anyone know?

Two people have now suggested a red-eyed vireo. I listened to the song
on line, and it is very similar. Does the vireo really sing at night,
though?
The moon is beautiful and bright again tonight. Perhaps the bird will
sing again. If it does I'll try to match the song with the recording I
heard.

I got very lucky this morning and just happened to look out my window to see a
pair of wood ducks landing in a tree in my yard. They moved to several
different trees before flying off. I have quite a few good sized cavitites,
perhaps with some luck they will return.
Also had my first Brown-Headed Cow Bird of the season and saw a Northern Flicker
hopping around on the ground picking up bugs just like a robin. In fact a few
robins even stopped in trees over-head and seemed to watch.

Just a heads up, I had an encounter with a new security=0A=

sign that backs up his position. I was not aware that The Air port=0A=

this unpleasant experience I found 2 bobolinks, at least 2 grasshopper=0A=
sparrows. No sign of the Uplands. It was a horrible day weather wise so=0A=
this may have had an affect. Does anyone know if the ones that were=0A=

Also the previously reported Henslow's was singing and after a long wait wa=

Also uploaded a few photos to my grovestreet album from crane creek, hope y=

Had a pleasant morning at Crane Creek, where there were lots of tripod
holes from which to take photographs of various warblers. My best
strategy was to follow that woman from Kentucky who had been on the
scene from May 1, and to look where she pointed.
Some images are posted at:

Because most of these are birds I'd never seen before, I'll bet there
are some mid-identifications, so please go ahead and let me know what
needs fixing up.

Perhaps the gunshots are from turkey hunters. See Michigan's turkey =

Also possible there is a conservation club with a shooting range near =

Even though we are at, or slightly past, the peak of Spring Migration, =
it seems like whenever I go birding, I am almost always hearing =
gunshots. I was at Nayanquing Wildlife area last week for a couple of =
hours after work in the Midland area. With no exageration, I heard =

Further, whenever I bird some of my other favorite spots; Harsen's =

I am just wondering if anyone else has similar experiences? I keep =

Not to mention the effect that the constant gun play may have with some =
