This is a final reminder about the field trip to Crane Creek State
Park, particularly the Magee Marsh Wildlife area on Sun., May 18. (See
Ken Kauffman's blog for daily summaries of birds at the park,
http://cranecreekbirding.blogspot.com/.)
We will meet at Busch's at the Plymouth Green shopping center on
southwest corner of Plymouth Rd. and US-23 (on the far northeast side
of Ann Arbor) at 6 am sharp (exit 41 on US-23) where we will
consolidate into fewer cars (if people want to). You can also meet our
group at Crane Creek's Magee Marsh Wildlife Area at 8:15 am at the
"Warbler Display." The return to Southeastern Michigan will be at
your leisure (or when your driver wants to return). Please pack
lunches, snacks, and drinks because there are NO fast food options in
or near the park.
Dress for the weather -- pack a bag with extra gloves, coats, hats,
etc., and store it in the car. Magee Marsh is almost entirely
boardwalk and you are rarely more than a 10-minute walk back to the
parking lot.
According to the meteorologists at channel 13 in Toledo, Sunday will
be partly sunny with highs struggling to reach 60 and a chance of
showers. For the latest Toledo-area weather including an animated
predictor that tells what is likely to happen later in that and the
following day, go to http://abclocal.go.com/wtvg/, click on "Weather"
> click on "7-Day Forecast" > click on "Watch video." Mornings can be
chilly at Magee Marsh, and north winds can make it downright cold,
raw, and uncomfortable because the air comes directly over the lake.
I would like to get an estimate of the number of people who are
considering this trip. Please RSVP to this message (karen.markey AT
umich.edu) or call me at home, 734-662-7576, and leave a message on my
answering machine if I'm not home to answer the phone. Also you can
call me if you have questions about the trip.
You do not have to RSVP to come on this trip -- just show up at
Busch's at 6 am or to the Magee Marsh Warbler display at 8:15 am. Non-
members of WAS are always welcome on this and on other WAS-sponsored
field trips. See you Sunday for a wonderful trip!

Subject: [birders] Dearborn birds, Acadian Flycatcher
From: Julie Craves <jcraves(AT)umd.umich.edu>
Date: 17 May 2008 9:36am
Things REALLY quieted down overnight. There were very few migrants
around today, but the bright spot was an Acadian Flycatcher in the
floodplain directly west of the Rose Garden. This is getting to be a
very uncommon bird around here.

Saturday morning there was a Mourning Warbler singing from a heavily thicke=
ted brush of non-native bushes on the northwest edge of Dow Prairie of Nich=
ol's Arboretum in Ann Arbor. [ Gee I wonder what happens to viewing opportu=
nities in the Arb for Mourning Warblers and other species that share its ha=
bitat preferences as Arb authorities systematically and relentlessly eradic=
ate these thicketed areas and replaces them with 'nice', open sunlighted sp=

=20
A Hooded Warbler was singing in the Rhododendron Glen. Up the hill, a White=
-eyed Vireo moved about the edges of the Evergreen grove just outside the c=
emetery. A late Winter Wren was also heard singing in this general area. A =
late Pine Siskin was by the Huron River along the Gallup Park biking and wa=
lking path. [Maybe a few Pine Siskins will try to nest in our area this sum=
mer.]

Bob Arthur told me he saw a Red-headed Woodpecker in the middle glen runnin=

Birders,
This morning I had my first Oakland County Grasshopper Sparrow. This is in an
area I've mentioned before regarding some shorebird habitat. It is in White
Lake in a location where a neighborhood has been started, roads are in but no
other construction. This is off Eagle Rd. north of White Lake Rd., west of
Ormand Rd. GPS: 42.69596,-83.568267
Other notable birds:
A Greater Yellowlegs was in the retention pond and a Ring-necked Pheasant could
be heard in the area.
Common Morehen is back on Moore Lake off the south end of Pettibone Lake Rd. in
Highland Rec Area.
At Indian Springs Metropark I walked the 4 mile loop trail and had 3 Acadian
Flycatchers and one of the resident Pileated Woodpeckers.
Take care,
Tom Pavlik

Antarctica and South Georgia: Penguins and Pintados
Join ace photographer Rich Miller for a photo safari to Antarctica and the
sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. See immense penguin rookeries, molting
Kings, necking blue-eyed shags, testosterone-crazed 2 ton elephant
seals, adorable baby Gentoo chicks, and pintados on parade, all set
among sculpted icebergs and fog-enshrouded dawn landscapes. Plus a
very homesick reindeer. Richard Miller is a researcher in the
Pathology Department and Geriatrics Center at the University of
Michigan Medical School, the go-to guy for very, very old mice, and
likes to photograph penguins because they do not fly away.
Washtenaw Audubon programs are held at the University of Michigan Matthaei
Botanical Gardens, 1800 North Dixboro Rd., Ann Arbor. Call Washtenaw Audubon at
677-3275 for more information about the program.
In addition to the program, hear news of the latest critter sightings and
field trips, and enjoy tasty snacks following the program.
Hope to see you there.

The "Golden One" originally found by Dan Sparks-Jackson is still
present and singing at the Four Mile Lake site.
Saw it twice between 11:30 and 12:30 today. In each case, it flew in
my direction, landing on branches so close I did not need my binocs.
No sign of a girlfriend or nest cavity.
A special thanks to Dan for posting this rare find.

Subject: [birders] Black-crowned Night Heron in Beverly Hills
From: "Joseph E. Faggan" <jfaggan(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 17 May 2008 4:53pm
About 60 feet north of the entrance bridge at the
Douglas-Evans preserve (Evergreen between 13 & 14 Mile
Rds, at the bottom of the dip) there is a large fallen
tree in the middle of the stream. This afternoon a
B-c Night Heron perched on it for a good ten minutes,
and even posed for a photo for a group of young people
who happened by.
I've been to the spot several times this season, and
this is the first time I've seen the species there, so
I don't know if this will be a favorite perch or not.
If so, you'll never have a better look at a
Black-crowned and you won't have to walk very far. (I
have seen the spcies here and at the nearby Riverside
pond in previous years.)

I was at Potato Creek State Park (about 10 miles south of South Bend, IN)
Thursday afternoon and took a brief walk around the trail next to the
Information Building and saw my very first Red-headed Woodpecker. I know
this is way out of the S.W. Michigan area but I offer this in reply to your
question about a come-back for this bird. The area was a wet woods with
standing water and several tall, dead trees among the live trees. Lots of
Redstarts and other woodpeckers in this same spot (Downy, Red-bellied and
Flickers).
