Subject: [birders] Washtenaw Audubon field trip offerings - this
week!
From: songsparrow(AT)wowway.com
Date: 14 May 2008 6:47am
Birders,
The second Tuesday Evening Birders took place last night. No report on the
trip yet, but it's still early.
Tomorrow morning, May 15th, the sixth of eight migration walks around
Nichols Arboretum will take place. As always, meet at 8:00am at the
Riverview Drive cul-de-sac off Geddes Road. You have probably read the
recent bird sightings from the Arb on this listserve. All excellent. We
are right in the thick of migration, so if you have not come along on a
migration walk yet, tomorrow would be the morning.
Sunday, May 18th, we offer another big field trip to Crane Creek. The trip
leader, Karen Markey, has already posted a trip reminder at the end of her
Dolph Park field trip report from last Sunday. She'll be posting again
soon.
All of the above field trips, and any of our other field trip information,
can be found on the Washtenaw Audubon Society website,
www.washtenawaudubon.org.
It's only mid-May. There's plenty more to come.

Howdy All!
Now that I have your attention, I will give you what details I have and you can
decide whether or not to give chase.? A couple of birders from Kalamazoo, MI
visiting Kelleys Island found a large hummingbird [perched] around 4:30-5:00pm
(today, May 13) on the North Pond Trail about 30 yrds beyond a trail split on
the right side of the trail as you head out toward the boardwalk.
Description:
* Easily bigger than Ruby-throated Hummingbird (initially called
"sparrow-sized")
* Decurved bill
* Black splotches on chest (running down the center)
* Green-backed with maybe some purple at or near the tail
* Didn't fit any of the pictures in Peterson's Guide (Eastern guide--the mango
is not in Peterson's)
These descriptions were given to me without this couple having any knowledge of
what a mango looks like, let alone what it is or where it's from.? It was I who
added the possible ID of?Green-breasted Mango to?the story.? The couple was
showed pictures of the mango *after* they had answered my questions about the
bird.? The man had 4 yrs of birding experience and the woman had just a year.?
They were not trying to make it into anything.? They just thought it looked
really odd.? Their complete naivity to this bird lent credence to their story
[to me, anyways] despite their level of expertise.? Several other birders?from
Kelleys Island Audubon and I went back out?right after getting this information
(7:45-8:15pm) and looked for the bird but without success.? A hummingbird
feeder is being put up tonight?along the path near where the sighting
occurred.? I will be out at the location early tomorrow morning.
I am posting this on the details above for your information.? This bird has not
been verified.? I do not know the birders personally.

Subject: [birders] Dawn Patrol
From: Dave Sing <dsing(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 14 May 2008 10:05am
Howdy. A very nice set of birds mixed in with the usuals for a
second consecutive morning. Woods were pretty noisy in
the dawn rain shower, with Wood thrush, Veery, Acadian flycatcher and
Carolina wren leading the chorus. Warblers and
others foraging and calling from the lower canopy and ground
vegetation, allowing for some nice views. Cape May,
Nashville and a super keen Blackpoll were additions from yesterdays
mix. Black-throated blue, sounding like a drunken
Cerulean, buzzing from the same spot as yesterday in the
white-cedars. I'd say that this has been the best two days of
the Spring, though I haven't ventured out of my yard for a better
perspective on things. I'm guessing those favored
woodland places (Mclure/Loveland, Lindley, Embury, Four Mile Woods,
Sharon Hollow/Nan Weston) are ahop with
activity as these weak fronts keep lapping against the Great Lakes.
Look down occasionally for morels, they are in progress as well.
P.S.: Has anyone been out to Embury to re-locate the Prairie warblers?
May! Hooray Hooray! DBS Chelsea MI

Subject: [birders] Magee Marsh - Don't forget the Visitor's Centre

Like most people, when visiting Magee Marsh I drive right past the
Visitor's Centre without a second thought (see FUNNY STORY below) on
my way to the Boardwalk. Yesterday George Kulesza and I heard rumour
of a Canada Warbler around the Visitor's Centre, so we decided to
check it out. What we saw there was two CANADA WARBLERS, one MOURNING
WARBLER, and one nesting PROTHONOTARY WARBLER. These were all seen
within a 100 meter stretch of path immediately to the left of the
Visitor's Centre (past the Purple Martin houses). None of these
warblers were seen (by us) on the Magee Marsh Boardwalk (although 18
others were).
FUNNY STORY: My first visit to Crane Creek two years ago was as a
passenger with another birder who also had not been there before. We
drove into the entrance not knowing what to expect, and saw the
parking lot by the Visitor's Centre and figured this must be the
place. We spent ~2 hours there, finding very little (< 10 species of
any kind of bird) and left thinking "what is the big deal about Crane
Creek?" It was only a week or two later when I drove all the way in
to the Boardwalk that I got it.
Joseph.

Subject: [birders] MOURNING WARBLER at Matthaei Bot. Gardens
(Dixboro)
From: Karen Markey <ylime(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 14 May 2008 11:45am
I took a contrarian approach to birding this morning and headed to
Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Dixboro where I have found spring
birding lackluster in recent years. Activity was very slow except
along the north-south paths bordering the creek. My eye caught
movement in an area of downed trees. Out popped a MOURNING WARBLER.
Just in case he sticks around, get on the main path at the entrance on
the left side of the main building (look for the "Trails" sign), enter
the trails, turn left at the first intersection (following the red-
yellow-blue arrows). Cross the first bridge on your right and turn
left (following the yellow-blue arrows). From the end of the bridge,
walk 190 paces (counting your left foot forward only, not your right)
(or stop where you see the "big" puddle), and look to your right into
the downed trees covered with vegetation for the MOURNING.
Other than this warbler, birding was slow. Some other goodies: Great
crested flycatcher, Warbling and Red-eyed vireos, Canada (2 total),
Chestnut-sided, Magnolia, Yellow warblers, several Redstarts, Common
yellowthroats, Northern waterthrush, Scarlet tanager, Rose-breasted
grosbeaks (including pair mating), Indigo buntings.

Subject: [birders] Arb Wednesday morning
From: "makielb(AT)excite.com" <makielb@excite.com>
Date: 14 May 2008 12:07pm
It was a very active morning before the rain started. There are many INDIGO
BUNTINGS (15-20+) and SCARLET TANAGERS (10-15+). There is a big shift in the
warbler composition. Instead of the slow trickle and change in the species this
was a big change. I found no yellow-rumps, but lots of MAGNOLIA, TENNESSEE,
and REDSTARTS. More flycatchers than previously - LEAST, PEWEE and KINGBIRD.
Two surprises- a SISKIN along DOW FIELD and a singing GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH south
from the WARBLER HOT SPOT.
RIVERVIEW again had lots of warblers and vireos. The highlight a HOODED WARBLER
singing
I THINK BIRD-WATCHING AFTER THE RAIN MIGHT BE PRODUCTIVE

Rather than think the vulture is giving a sign not to buy Chinese goods,
perahaps Vulture was telling you something else. Vultures can see what
others cannot, and when they appear they may be asking you to look more
closely at a situation. When vulture appears it is time pay attention, to
be more patient, to be resourceful and to remember that when the old is
removed something new will replace that which was. Vultures always show the
way for the Greater Good. They are always associated with purity and
harmony.

Fact: The night before last I watched a turkey vulture ride fairly low on
weak thermals all around the front of Jackson Rd. Meijers. S/he sectioned
the parking areas, carefully scrutinizing each one, then would start over.
She was there when I came out and still working after I finally got all the

Fact: Mejers has begun stocking lots of food from China (canned mushrooms,

Subject: [birders] Huron Meadows Metropark
From: Melissa Pappas <ftknoxfox53(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 14 May 2008 10:49am
We are so fortunate to live immediately adjacent to
the non-public portion of Huron Meadows Metropark.
Notable "back yard" birds for this past weekend
included:
Rufous-sided Towhee
Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Magnolia Warbler
Ovenbird
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Blue-winged Warbler
Northern Parula
Black-throated Green Warbler
Hermit Thrush
Tree Swallows
We commonly also get Yellow-billed Cuckoo (and the
occasional Black-billed), but didn't see any this
weekend. Thought I heard a yellow-billed, but couldn't
be certain as it didn't repeat. There are usually
scads (very scientific term) of Indigo Buntings, but
didn't hear or see a single one.
Want to thank y'all for the warnings about ticks. Sure
enough, one found me. Luckily I found it before it dug
in.
As for Baltimore Orioles - we have many (both sexes)
who are hanging out in our yard eating the suet and
visiting the hummingbird feeders.
The hummingbird population is building with several
males and at least one female regularly attending the
feeders when the orioles vacate. There's a lot to be
said for hanging out 7 feeders.

Brief appearance, just long enough to whip the glass on him, of a
yellow-rumped warbler. Hope I got this right. Once again, I don't have my
Julie book with me so can't be sure if this is a logical arrival time for
this area.

Subject: [birders] WAS field trip: Crane Creek's Magee Marsh on Sun.,
May 18, 6 am to mid afternoon

On Sunday, May 18, I am leading a Washtenaw Audubon Society (WAS)-
sponsored field trip to Crane Creek State Park, particularly the Magee
Marsh Widlife area. Magee Marsh is a world renowned migrant trap on
the shores of Lake Erie in northwest Ohio. Nearing the end of their
migration and facing a long, tiring water crossing, migrating birds
stop here and feed while they wait for a good tail wind to continue on
their way. Although the park will be a little past peak, we should
encounter the females of several species, and we may add a Connecticut
Warbler and latest batch of flycatchers to our respective lists. Also
the human crowds should be thinning out so late in the season.
Let's meet at Busch's at the Plymouth Green shopping center on
southwest corner of Plymouth Rd. and US-23 (on the far northeast side
of Ann Arbor) at 6 am sharp (exit 41 on US-23) where we will
consolidate into fewer cars (if people want to). We may stop at
Metzger Marsh on the drive to Crane Creek. You can also meet our group
at Crane Creek's Magee Marsh Wildlife Area at 8:15 am at the Warbler
display. Return to Southeastern Michigan at your leisure (or when your
driver wants to return). Please pack lunches, snacks, and drinks
because there are NO fast food options past Oregon, about 15 miles
west of Crane Creek.
Dress for the weather -- hat, windbreaker, convertible slacks, layers,
and insect repellant are recommended. According to the meteorologists
at channel 13 in Toledo, Sunday should be sunny with highs in the mid
60s and chance of showers. For the latest Toledo-area weather
including an animated predictor that tells what is likely to happen
later in that and the following day, go to http://abclocal.go.com/
wtvg/: click on "Weather" > click on "7-Day Forecast" > click on
"Watch video." Mornings can be chilly at Magee Marsh, and northeast
winds can make it downright cold because the air comes directly over
the lake.
I would like to get an estimate of the number of people who are
considering this trip and the number of people who would want to
drive. Please RSVP to this message (karen.markey(AT)umich.edu) or call me
at home, 734-662-7576, and leave a message on my answering machine if
I'm not home to answer the phone. Also you can call me if you have
questions about the trip.
You do not have to RSVP to come on this trip -- just show up at
Busch's at 6 am or to the Magee Marsh Warbler display at 8:15 am. Non-
members of WAS are always welcome on this and on other WAS-sponsored
field trips. See you Sunday for a wonderful trip!

No mystery hummer this morning despite coverage of the area of-and-on
from
7:15am thru 11:00am. A couple Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are coming to
the feeders along the trail. Although a bit cool and wet, birding was
pretty good this morning on the island with decent numbers of warblers.

Subject: [birders] Field Trip Report, Tuesday Evening Birders, May 13
From: Mike Sefton <mseft(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 14 May 2008 2:03pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Birders,
In contrast to the 25 birders who showed up for Tuesday Evening Birders on May
6, birders stayed away in droves for the May 13 edition. The seven birders who
participated enjoyed beautiful weather, but a paucity of birds. However, they
did have excellent views of some of the birds located by co-leaders Lathe
Claflin and Mike Sefton.
First stop was Dolph Park, where the keen-eyed/eared Eyster youngsters located
Palm Warbler and American Redstarts, as well as Green Heron. A couple of
cooperative Rose-breasted Grosbeaks posed for close views, as did a Baltimore
Oriole. A Wood Duck pair was a big hit, but the hoped for Red-headed Woodpecker
was a no show.
Next stop was a field on Stone School Rd., where crippling views were had of
Bobolinks in courtship flight, and Savannah Sparrows with bright yellow lores
were seen. Scope views of a distant Eastern Meadowlark were also obtained.
The final stop was the Ann Arbor airport, where scope views of Horned Larks
and a Red-tailed Hawk were found. The last bird of the day was a very brightly
plumaged singing Eastern Meadowlark that perched on top of one of the runway
lights, allowing leisurely views through the scope.
Join us on Tuesday, May 20, when City Ornithologist Dea Armstrong, newly
returned from the wine-dark Aegean Sea, will produce an array of birds that will
stagger the imagination and delight the eye.

Subject: [birders] Summer Tanager, Jackson Co
From: "Lathe Claflin" <lathe.claflin(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 14 May 2008 5:52pm
Greetings,
A female Summer Tanager has been coming intermittenly to a suet feeder
at our home since early afternoon (sorry for the delay in posting; my
email program has been working about as regular as this bird's
visits). The suet holder is on the side of a platform feeder in the
back of our yard. People are welcome to come. Directions: I94 exit
150, go N 1.5 miles, turn right on Glenn Rd, go 1/4 mile to first
drive on your left (N). We live in the second house up the drive, the
first being on the corner.

Subject: [birders] Slew of Baltimore Orioles
From: "Penny" <Jumpthroughhoops(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 14 May 2008 10:39pm
I thought my nectar feeders were emptying awfully fast and thought the
Orioles were visiting far too often to be just one bird or pair of birds.
Well, today, while 2 male orioles were chasing each other off of the
feeders, a third male took advantage and sipped the nectar behind their
backs. They must be having a banner year. It's obvious I'm also seeing
more than one female. Could there be more?
