Valid points Lathe. Since it would lean in my favor I would say the math is
total county species divided by number of participants. Then again, you have
the advantage of it being the 2nd week in May. Go to the 3rd week of May and we
may have you. We have the advantage of a nice shoreline and, of course,
Kirtland's Warbler. We just don't get many of those 'southern' warblers.
All in fun!

black-throated blue, black-throated green, cape may, magnolia, ovenbird,
redstart, protonotary, yellow-rump and palm. I posted a few of my photos
on http://www.grovestreet.com/jsp/picview.jsp?album=88675
There were also warbling vireo, ruby-crowned kinglet, blue-grey
gnatcatcher, scarlet tanager, house wren, blue-winged teal and great blue
heron. I probaby missed many species that were there but it was wonderful
anyway.

Briefly at our hummingbird feeders. After consulting with Allen Chartier, I'm
fairly certain that these were "overshoot" birds. I'm keeping my eyes open,
however, as there were both male and female visitors, and would dearly love to
find that they decided to hang around where there is plenty to eat and lots of
appropriate habitat in the Metropark behind our home.
These are the first we've seen since moving from Georgia in '03.

The Waterloo Recreation Area in northwestern Washtenaw County was excellent=
for birds and butterflies Monday May 5. Several Cerulean Warblers were on=
territory on both Loveland and McClure Roads. By listening for their songs=
and showing a little patience you get some pretty good views of most of th=
e Ceruleans. Near the intersection of Ridge and McClure road there were two=
singing Hooded Warblers and several Blue-winged Warblers. I found one of t=
he Hooded Warblers singing while foraging from the floor of the forest unde=
rstudy--I think a fairly unusual spot from which to hear a Hooded Warbler s=
ing.
=20
In the Discovery Center area I had at least three Northern Waterthrush from=
the wetland areas. I heard the loud 'thumping' of a Pileated Woodpecker an=
d then saw this magnificient bird fly by me. Over at the MUCC campground be=
sides the territorial Pine Warblers I found several Pine Siskins flying abo=
ut.
=20
For the whole day I saw a total of 13 butterfly species. Most of them were =
in the Discovery center area. The best butterflies of the day were a single=
Brown Elfin, about ten Pine Elfins, my first Tiger Swallowtails of the yea=
r, and a Monarch. I found the Monarch along the main road leading into the =
MUCC campground. It was a fairly worn female showing that it had been migra=
ting for some distance. It looked like it was searching for some milkweed p=
lants to lay eggs on and complete its lifecycle.
=20
The Pine Elfins are particularly spectacular little butterflies that in our=
area can sometimes be found in White Pine plantations. The upperside of th=
e wings are a nothing special dark brown but the underside have a very dist=
inctive, eye-catching banded pattern that makes the butterfly extremely att=
ractive. A good photograph of a Pine Elfin can be found at http://home.att=
.net/~r.a.kuhlman/GWashtenawSurvey.htm. Another Elfin species the Brown Elf=
in follows this same pattern, dull on topside but interesting underside win=
gs--good pictures of Brown Elfins can be seen at http://www.rlephoto.com/bu=
tterflies/elfin_brown02.html.

this can't be for taking a bird walk or learning some birds or

Subject: [birders] My Two Cents on Luck
From: Melissa Pappas <ftknoxfox53(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 6 May 2008 6:36am
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
To me, birding has always been a combination of many factors. Luck can be part
of it. Walking slowly, listening, observing, being still and (call me crazy)
using "the force" are essential to me. No, I'm not talking to Obiwan or Yoda,
but I'm talking about opening up all my senses to the extremely subtle changes
and movement around me. Even though I'll never see all the birds that are around
me, I might be able hear some chip notes that hurrying or even moving through
tall grass might have otherwise precluded.
I am also a firm believer in providing the food/nectar, water, and cover that
birds require in my own habitat. If I'd not put out the hummingbird feeders with
clean sugar water, the most unusual visitor to our yard would still have been
in the area (the luck factor), but we'd never have seen her.
Likewise, if I didn't have the habit of slowly observing my feeders every
afternoon upon returning from work, I would never have taken notice of that odd
hummer at the feeder.
Everyone approaches their hobby/pas-time in their own very personal way. I
think that there is no right or wrong way to bird (except when it infringes on
others.) The main thing is to enjoy yourself and your environment wherever that
might be.
Just my two cents.

In the woods I saw a streaked warbler sized bird but coud not identify it.

Red-tailed Hawk (sitting 5 feet away within arm's reach)
Red-bellied Woodpecker (very animated, noisy, and active)
Red-breasted Nuthatch
White-breasted Nuthatches (also very animated...)
Hermit Thrush
Blue-grey Gnatcatchers
House Wrens
Great Crested Flycatcher
Yellow-throated Vireo
Yellow Warbler
Black-throated Green Warblers
Yellow-rumped Warblers
Nashville Warblers
Palm Warblers

As part of my effort to bird the home turf, the following warblers were

parula, and orange-crowned. The black-throated greens and black-and-whites
that have been present were either gone or quiet today.

Subject: [birders] Tonight: Tuesday Evening Birders, 6pm, Ann Arbor.
Free, no membership required
From: Mike Sefton <mseft(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 6 May 2008 11:26am
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Tuesday Evening Birders May 06, 2008, 6:00 PM.
Free and open to the public, membership is not required. Sponsored by the
Washtenaw Audubon Society.
Leaders: Mike Sefton and Lathe Claflin on May 6th and 13th, Dea Armstrong on
May 20th and 27th. This field activity is back by popular demand, and we’ll try
to show you some of Washtenaw County’s more interesting birds. Beginning and
intermediate birders and kids are especially encouraged to attend.
Meet at 6:00 pm for a 6:15 pm sharp (!) departure. Meeting spot will again be
the Miller Road Park & Ride commuter parking lot off M-14 at Miller Rd. in
northwest Ann Arbor. Look for birders with binoculars and spotting scopes.
Car-pooling is encouraged. If you plan to take your car, arrive at the meeting
spot with enough gas for a drive of up to possibly 30 miles, depending on where
we find birds earlier in the day. If you plan to ride with someone else, bring
a little cash to give to the driver to help defray the cost of gas. We
generally return to the parking lot by nightfall.
Bring binoculars if you have them. We’ll have some spotting scopes to share.
Dress for the weather, which can be chilly if we are near water, and, given
that this is Michigan, there’s always the possibility of rain. Some walking may
be required to see certain birds, including walking in high grass, so closed
toe shoes and long pants are recommended. Mosquito repellent is a good idea
later in May.
Hope to see you there.

Subject: [birders] 5/4-5/5 Willow Run Airport, Cherry Hill Nature
Preserve, Crane Creek/Magee Marsh Metzger Marsh
From: Nathan Crawford <racerx104(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 6 May 2008 3:05pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
The Upland Sandpipers remain at Willow Run in the usual spot. I also had 4 =
Swallows right next to each other on the Barb Wire Fencing surrounding the =
Airport including the less common Cliff Swallow.
I stopped by Cherry Hill Nature Preserve the same day. Place was very birdy=
for a change. Many Blue-wing warblers calling and seen. Possible Connectic=
ut warbler heard and briefly seen that was near the center of the park in t=
he area with all the blue bird boxes and now a bench, however it was on the=
move so not sure if it is worth pursuing. 4 or more Rose-breasted Grosbeak=
were calling and 2 were seen. Many Eastern Towhee here.
On 5/5 I went to Crane Creek/Magee Marsh and Metzger Marsh for the first ti=
me. I normally go to Pelee.
At Metzger Marsh I observed 5 Ibis flying in formation very far out and sil=
houetted so not sure of the actual I.D. sorry. Crane creek was pretty activ=
e with 15 species of warbler. I would have to say the highlight for me was =
seeing at least 2x White-eyed vireo which some birders noted were common he=
re in migration (not sure that is true). Ovenbird were everywhere. Many clo=
se encounters with Warblers. Such a interesting phenomena to see so many bi=
rders cluster together on the board walk. A bit uncomfortable for my liking=
, but good for seeing lots of birds with so many eyes.
I uploaded some highlight photos of some exceptionally cooperative subjects=
to the site. I know that the Oriole is common, but the one we observed was=
so cooperative and fresh looking I thought it would be a nice treat for ev=
eryones eyes, especially the poor souls stuck at work right now.
Anyway good birding!

I have no clue what this bird could be. I have never seen a bird like it.
Small, white, yellow, and I couldn't see it all that well to be honest.
Four pictures that are really horrible if you want to take a guess.
_http://www.wovenwoman.com/somebird_ (http://www.wovenwoman.com/somebird)
It was "cheep" ing. I thought it was a parakeet at first, because of the
colors and voice, but it was the shape and size of a large house finch.
I guess I need to bite the bullet and get that digital camera, as these
photos were taken with my cell phone.
Namaste,
Edie

Edie; I'm going to leap way out a limb and say female Rose-breasted grosbeak.
The fourth picture is most suggestive. Not horrible for a cell phone camera.

Subject: [birders] Lark Sparrow at Petersburg State Game Area Western
Monroe County
From: Roger Kuhlman <rkuhlman(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 6 May 2008 9:07pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Tuesday afternoon I was butterflying at Petersburg State Game Area in weste=
rn Monroe County when I found a Lark Sparrow in one of the prairie openings=
in the northwest sector of the reserve. Periodically it was singing its di=
stinctive song. I don't know how long the bird will remain at the site but =
it seemed to be prospecting the area since the habitat, while small, is att=
ractive to the species. Almost exactly a year ago May 7, 2007 I had a Lark =
Sparrow (the same bird?) at Petersburg SGA but in a different prairie openi=
ng.
=20
To go look for the bird take Lulu Road west from Summerfeld Road and park a=
t the third small parking lot in the SGA [this lot is on the south side of =
the road]. Then walk south out into the prairie opening and listen for the =
bird. If it is not there, I would suggest trying all the other openings off=
of both Lulu and Teal roads.
=20
Besides finding the Lark Sparrow, butterflying at Petersburg SGA was excell=
ent. I found 15 or 16 species for the day including a possible Horace's Dus=
kywing, three Meadow Fritillaries and a record early Gray Hairstreak. The p=
revious early first sighting date for Gray Hairstreak in the Greater Washte=
naw Butterfly Survey for southeast Michigan (Washtenaw, Wayne, Monroe, and =
Lenawee counties) had been June 5 in 2000. Almost a month early, that is pr=
etty impressive.=20
=20
As is consistent with early season broods, this Gray Hairstreak was quite s=
mall compared to those one sees in the summer season. I first saw this butt=
erfly in flight and noticed the darkest gray coloration and its small size.=
I knew it was something special and had to get a good look at. Fortunately=
I did not lose sight of the butterfly in its erratic flight and it soon la=
nded to nectar where I could identify it as a Gray Hairstreak. Gray Hairstr=
eaks are uncommon in our area and finding one is always a great prize. Most=
years we turn up a total of 2 to 7 Gray Hairstreaks per season.
=20
Most of the prairie areas of Petersburg SGA had been subject to a controlle=
d burn recently so the prairie openings look quite healthy. However that ca=
n be deceptive. Fire and controlled burns are a two-edged sword especially =
for insect populations. They can totally destroy certain insect species inc=
luding butterflies at a site when there are no nearby habitats with healthy=
populations of these species from which the site can be re-colonized. At l=
east two butterfly species at Petersburg Persius Duskywing and Aphrodite ar=
e at risk. Persius Duskywing has been on decline at the site for quite some=
time with perhaps only a small vestigial population remaining. No clear re=
cords of the species have occurred since 2003 but hope always remained for =
finding another Persius Duskywing. Aphrodite was a different story. The pop=
ulation at Petersburg has always been thriving. That contrasts with the fac=
t that outside of Petersburg SGA Aphrodite is a rare butterfly in southeast=
Michigan. There is no other spot where the species is seen consistently ye=
ar in and year out let alone in good numbers. From my inspection of the bur=
n all the areas where Aphrodite were concentrated were burned. As a result =
Aphrodite could be extirpated from Petersburg. We won't know until they nor=
mally emerge from their chrysalises in mid June. Losing Aphrodite from Pete=
rsburg would be a tragedy.=20
=20
Butterflies found at Petersburg SGA:
Dreamy Duskywing
Juvenal's Duskywing
Horace's Duskywing (?)
Wild Indigo Duskywing
Spring Azure
Cabbage White
Clouded Sulphur
Orange Sulphur
White Colias (white female form of either Clouded Sulphur or Orange Sulphur=
)
American Copper
American Painted Lady
Red Admiral
Mourning Cloak
Eastern-tailed Blue
Meadow Fritillary
Gray Hairstreak
Pearl Crescent

This evening from 5:20 to 6:00 I made a rushed visit to Waterloo to see the
ceruleans Roger reported for Monday. Me and my mom heard at least 3 ceruleans
singing, and observed a pair at the first pull-off on the right side of McClure
Rd, between Crooked Lake and Loveland. The birds were on the right side of the
road, along with a single male Blue-winged Warbler. There was a male Scarlet
Tanager on the left side of the road, constantly giving his "chick-burrr" call,
but never singing. Others present included Nashville, ovenbird, Eastern
Towhee, and plenty of Great-crested Flycatchers, in full "song." We had no luck
with the Hooded warblers.
