In addition, there is a nesting pair of trumpeters at the pond at Scio Church
and Parker, SW of Ann Arbor.
Watch out, the male is REALLY protective. If you get out to take a photo, he
will chase you off.
Here is the male

In addition to the info from Allen, I recall an article from Science News.
There was an article about this bird a few years back (2004?). They found that
the bird likely gets its toxin from a beetle it eats.
Here is a link to the article:
http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/5596/title/Poison_Source_Toxic_birds_may_get_chemical_from_beetle
If you can't get to it, let me know and I will post a small snippet from the
article here.

Subject: [birders] RE: Brown Park, Ann Arbor
From: "Cendra" <cendra(AT)digitalrealm.net>
Date: 5 May 2008 12:18am
My trillium is out, too. It seems to shine down in the shady part of my
garden.
Today we had the blue jays (irritatingly they only said JAY JAY JAY and
didn't make any of those other interesting calls). The cardinal pair
flitted through the tree tops, the male singing and shining in the afternoon
sunlight, and the female saying DIK DIK DIK. The usual robins and sparrow
(still not identified) rounded out the gardening time.

Pam and I took a few minutes to walk through Brown Park this afternoon just
before dinner. We heard or saw redwing blackbirds, robins, cardinals,
bluejays and up by the blacktop walkway we saw some yellow warblers.
However, we were seriously distracted from the birding by the beautiful
carpets of trillium that are scattered over the whole area of the woods at
the east side of the park. From the lot off Packard, you just take the
walkway over the pedestrian bridge that crosses the creek, and then take the
right-hand fork and follow the trails through the woods. There are hundreds
and hundreds of trillium in many large carpets throughout a 200x200 yard
area.
You may forget that you're birding.
The official name is Marybeth Doyle Park, but all the signs that I saw still
say Brown Park. If you Google "Brown Park, Ann Arbor" the city's webpage for
the park is the second one on the list, and it has a nice PDF map.

Subject: [birders] safe passage
When the sky is clear, the migrating birds can see the stars and Moon, if
any. These are what they normally use to migrate. However, in a cloudy or
foggy situation, they attempt to use the lights of buildings, mistaking them
for stars. The result is disaster.

I am forwarding bird sightings in Miller Woods to the 'Friends of Miller
Woods' Association. They are working to increase awareness and
appreciation of these woods to the local neighbors, leading wild flower
walks through the property. If you do any bird watching there, please
consider forwarding your list to me off line. Miller Woods is on Powell
between Beck and Ridge on the north side of the road. It is 10 fenced
in acres and has a road side sign. It backs up to additional acreage.
You can also bird watch in the meadow on the north east corner of Ridge
and Powell. Two weeks ago I saw Yellow Rumped, Yellow and Black
-Throated Green Warblers. I don't get there as often as I would like.

I'm convinced the originator(s) of the North American Migration Count are/were
from Washtenaw County. I mean, c'mon -- the second Saturday in May??
My wife and I will be doing the NAMC for Alcona County for the 6th year. In the
(unlikely) event anyone is in the county this Saturday please let me know.
Weather permitting we should come in around the century mark as we often do --
well behind the Wastenites (Washteians?). Ahhhhh.... but SPBP (Species Per
Birding Participant) should rival anyone.
Have fun,
Tom Pavlik

Subject: [birders] Some Seasonal Arrivals in the Yard; Great horned
at the Springs
From: Dave Sing <dsing(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 5 May 2008 12:46pm
Howdy. A noisy morning in the yard. Yard firsts of the season
included Least flycatcher (che-Bec! che-Bec!... and so on), the neighbor's
yearly Orchard oriole, a White-crowned sparrow, Indigo bunting,
Magnolia and Bay-breasted warblers and a Yellow-throated vireo
(Three-A... Three-A. Three-A... Three-A). Blue jays still abundant
and acting like it's a football Saturday.
Relocated the Great horned owl near the Sylvan Springs last night.
Bird was booming from the woods just West of the Headwater pond.
This woods has been frequented most recently by Barred owl, so I
imagine both could be heard if the timing is right. Also had 15
Sandhills perusing a recently plowed field on Beeman rd., and a
calling Sora from a wet spot on Cassidy rd.

Subject: [birders] Jackson County, Henslow's, Sedge Wren etc.
From: "Don Henise" <don_henise(AT)ntm.org>
Date: 5 May 2008 2:04pm
Birded Portage Lake Unit in Waterloo Township, Jackson County this morning. The
only new arrival we had there was a Northern Parula singing near the flag pole
just beyond the entrance "guard" shack. The annual Spotted Sandpipers were along
the lake shore near the beach area. The only other migrants were 1
Black-throated Green Warbler, 3 or 4 Nashville Warblers, and several
Yellow-rumped Warblers. Although not new arrivals both Blue-winged Warbler and
Warbling Vireo seemed to be in greater numbers than last week.
In the field on Riethmiller Road across from the Lutheran Church, 5+ Henslow's
Sparrows were calling along with 1 Sedge Wren. Several Bobolinks were performing
their bubblely (is that a word?) display flight. A little farther east on
Riethemiller we saw our fist Sandhill Crane chick of the year.
At the intersection of Maute and Camp Roads more Bobolinks were calling and
several Savannah Sparrow were singing.
On Glenn Road between Baldwin and Katz a little east of the two large dead
cottonwoods were 2 Cerulean Warblers, 1 American Redstart, 1 Nashville Warbler,
1 Northern Parula, and 1 Northern Waterthrush.

Subject: [birders] Tuesday Evening Birders tomorrow, May 6, 6pm, Ann
Arbor. Free, no membership required
From: Mike Sefton <mseft(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 5 May 2008 1:38pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Tuesday Evening Birders
May 06, 2008, 6:00 PM.
Free and open to the public, membership is not required. Sponsored by the
Washtenaw Audubon Society.
Leaders: Mike Sefton and Lathe Claflin on May 6th and 13th, Dea Armstrong on
May 20th and 27th. This field activity is back by popular demand, and we’ll try
to show you some of Washtenaw County’s more interesting birds. Beginning and
intermediate birders and kids are especially encouraged to attend.
Meet at 6:00 pm for a 6:15 pm sharp (!) departure. Meeting spot will again be
the Miller Road Park & Ride commuter parking lot off M-14 at Miller Rd. in
northwest Ann Arbor. Look for birders with binoculars and spotting scopes.
Car-pooling is encouraged. If you plan to take your car, arrive at the meeting
spot with enough gas for a drive of up to possibly 30 miles, depending on where
we find birds earlier in the day. If you plan to ride with someone else, bring
a little cash to give to the driver to help defray the cost of gas. We
generally return to the parking lot by nightfall.
Bring binoculars if you have them. We’ll have some spotting scopes to share.
Dress for the weather, which can be chilly if we are near water, and, given
that this is Michigan, there’s always the possibility of rain. Some walking may
be required to see certain birds, including walking in high grass, so closed
toe shoes and long pants are recommended. Mosquito repellent is a good idea
later in May.
Hope to see you there.

Subject: [birders] New finds, Turkey Vulture Nest and Rufous sided
Towhee
From: david allen <whiteoakart(AT)hughes.net>
Date: 5 May 2008 8:39pm
We had a first at our feeder, a rufous sided towhee.
We also found something else I have never seen before, a nesting
turkey vulture pair. The nest is inside a giant hollow tree. The tree
is about 3 feet in diameter and everything above 20 feet is broken off.
The hole on the tree where the female vulture enters is about 10 feet
up and about 3 feet high by 2 feet wide.
We found it in an unpleasant way. My wife was riding her horse and as
she went by the tree the vulture swooped out right in front of us. The
horse did a 180, Sue made an unplanned emergency dismount.

through Nichols Arboretum begins at 8:00 am. As always, meet at the
Riverview Drive cul-de-sac off Geddes Road.
3. Saturday all day, May 10th - the annual International Migratory
Bird Count takes place throughout the county. There have been posts
from area leaders seeking help to count their areas. See Mike
Kielb's earlier post for his details. Alternatively, you may also
call Roger Wykes, the Washtenaw County coordinator at 734/769-6482,
to sign on.
4. Sunday morning, May 11th, Dolph Park, starting at 7:30am - we
have a last minute impromptu field trip to add on. Karen Markey has
generously offered to lead a morning birding trip through Dolph Park
- one of Ann Arbor's main migrant hotspots.
Details for all of the above can be found in earlier posts and on our
website - www.washtenawaudubon.org - click on field trips.
I'll close with saying that there is more coming next week, too.
Don't put down those binoculars!
Join us and good birding,
Cathy Carroll

Subject: [birders] First hummingbird in our yard
From: "Bob Pennock" <rhp3(AT)wowway.com>
Date: 5 May 2008 7:38pm
Just two minutes ago we spotted our first hummingbird of the year at our
feeder. The feeder has been up a week or so, and I'm sure they have
visited the feeder before today, but this was the first eye-witness
account. Great! Now if the orioles will visit.

This weekend my wife Aprille and I took a group of young birders, =
including our kids Izzy and Jordan, along with Mary Margaret Ferraro and =
Aaron Baum, to camp at Tawas Point State Park for the weekend. We made a =
short stop at Nayanquing Wildlife Refuge on the way back. It was a =
little early for the big show up there, but we had surprisingly nice =
weather and a lot of bird activity. We also had the park almost to =
ourselves. I'm sure it will be very different in two weeks.
Highlights included a Red-Headed Woodpecker (my first in several years) =

Tom,
It depends on whether you mean species collectively or individually!
In fact, I would put many Washtenaw birders (Washteians does not cut
it!) up against you folks any day. Many of us are in the 90-100 bird
range for the day. So the game is on.

Well I just heard that Alpena county was number uno for 2007! I as =
coordinator for St. Clair county sure would like to close the gap at =
least a bit to Washtenaw, Alpena or the other top counts! We have the =
Lake Huron shoreline, the St. Clair River and Anchor Bay! Just don't =
seem to get the participants. If I could just get a participant with a =
good sized boat (or even a Seaplane!) to go out on the many outer =
islands of Anchor Bay! ! Our SPBP is good but we never have gotten =
more then 7th or 8th place. As many probably don't realize, St. Clair =
County has NO inland lakes! Not one! except for a damned area of the =
Black River on private property with no admittance! (Well I guess a few =
working small gravel pits)
Ya got to hand it to Washtenaw though on one point, they do have =
lakes but they are an inland county!.
Tom I agree, from personal experience if it was the 3rd week of May =
countys like Kalkaska, but especially Antrim, or Charlevoix would be =
ones to rival!

Valid points Lathe. Since it would lean in my favor I would say the =
math is total county species divided by number of participants. Then =
again, you have the advantage of it being the 2nd week in May. Go to =
the 3rd week of May and we may have you. We have the advantage of a =
nice shoreline and, of course, Kirtland's Warbler. We just don't get =
many of those 'southern' warblers.
All in fun!
Tom
