The sugar water should be fine once thawed, but if you have hummingbirds already (as 67 observers have), you might want to put out some room temperature stuff before sunrise. Allen T. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] whooping crane reporting update From: "Karen Cleveland" <clevelak(AT)michigan.gov> Date: 29 Apr 2008 1:56pm The following is an update from the Operation Migration web site ( http://www.operationmigration.org/Field_Journal.html ). The data submitted via the online form mentioned in the update ( http://www.fws.gov/midwest/whoopingcrane/sightings/sightingform.cfm ) are shared with between the government agencies and conservation organizations which are working together to conserve whooping cranes. If you see any whooping cranes in Michigan, please report them via this form to ensure that the sighting is received by the appropriate people. Thanks Karen ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Date: April 24, 2008 Subject: NEW!! WHOOPING CRANE SIGHTING REPORT FORM At long last we are able to offer Craniacs, birders, and the general public a better way to report their sightings and assist us by providing helpful information. Thanks to efforts by Joel Trick, (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, WI), Bill Brooks (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service , FL), and Beth Kienbaum (Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources), a new website to receive Whooping crane sightings is up and running. The new form on the site prompts the observer to enter the most critical information on their sighting, which will diminish, if not do away with the need for follow-up calls and emails, and there eliminate delays in checking on the birds and confirming the sighting. If you live in the eastern flyway and its adjacent states, please check out the Sighting Reporting Form so you will be aware of what to take note of should you spot a Whooping crane(s). We will make the link to the Reporting Form a permanent feature here on the Field Journal page. Please feel free to pass the Sighting Reporting Form link on to others, including birding organizations, so that as many folks as possible will be aware of where to report their observations of Whooping cranes. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ -------------------------------------------------------------- Karen T. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] A quick trip to Idaho From: "Bob Bethune" <poihths(AT)comcast.net> Date: 29 Apr 2008 11:07pm This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- While in Idaho this past weekend, I had fun seeing magpies. I really = wish we could invite a few of them to come live out East here. My wife saw a big flock of green-back swallows near our B&B; I kept an eye out for ravens, which nest in the area, but didn=92t see any. Our B&B host told us that hummingbirds are late arriving this year by about two to three weeks. = The area in question is that around Orofino, Idaho. =20 Bob Bethune Freshwater Seas http://www.freshwaterseas.com =20 _____ =20 From: LaHaie, Ivan J.
