Subject: [birders] Hummingbird Feeder
From: mlparow(AT)umich.edu

Do I need to replace the liquid in a hummingbird feeder if it freezes (as
it apparently did last night), or can I just let it thaw? It has 4 parts
water to 1 part sugar. Thanks. --mike

Oh, good question. My so-called non-frosty low of 36° last night resulted
in a frozen birdbath this morning. I did change my feeder solution today
because it was time, but I'll be interested in the answer for tomorrow.
Thanks,
Su in Adrian

Mike,
You should replace your sugar water every 3-4 days (1-2 days if it is 85
degrees or hotter). The sugar water should be fine once thawed, but if you
have hummingbirds already (as 67 observers have), you might want to put out
some room temperature stuff before sunrise.

We had a Forster's Tern resting on a post in the rain on April 13. It
was on Spring Lake, Sylvan Twp. It was a single bird and only stayed a
few hours. This is the first time we have seen this species here on the
lake, although they are not unusual spring migrants in the county. I
have posted a picture on the birders web site.

Subject: [birders] whooping crane reporting update
From: "Karen Cleveland" <clevelak(AT)michigan.gov>
Date: 29 Apr 2008 1:56pm
The following is an update from the Operation Migration web site
( http://www.operationmigration.org/Field_Journal.html ). The
data submitted via the online form mentioned in the update
( http://www.fws.gov/midwest/whoopingcrane/sightings/sightingform.cfm )
are shared with between the government agencies and conservation
organizations which are working together to conserve whooping
cranes. If you see any whooping cranes in Michigan, please report them
via this form to ensure that the sighting is received by the appropriate
people.
Thanks

Subject: NEW!! WHOOPING CRANE SIGHTING REPORT FORM
At long last we are able to offer Craniacs, birders, and the general public
a better way to report their sightings and assist us by providing helpful
information.
Thanks to efforts by Joel Trick, (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, WI), Bill
Brooks (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service , FL), and Beth Kienbaum (Wisconsin
Dept. of Natural Resources), a new website to receive Whooping crane
sightings is up and running.
The new form on the site prompts the observer to enter the most critical
information on their sighting, which will diminish, if not do away with the
need for follow-up calls and emails, and there eliminate delays in checking
on the birds and confirming the sighting.
If you live in the eastern flyway and its adjacent states, please check out
the Sighting Reporting Form so you will be aware of what to take note of
should you spot a Whooping crane(s). We will make the link to the Reporting
Form a permanent feature here on the Field Journal page.
Please feel free to pass the Sighting Reporting Form link on to others,
including birding organizations, so that as many folks as possible will be
aware of where to report their observations of Whooping cranes.

arrived in my yard this morning. I know the orioles always show up the

year because I had to take a lot of shrubs out because of foundation work.

Date: 29 Apr 2008 9:31pm
I have just uploaded 4 photos to the Grove St. site:
http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html
The first two are of a great-blue heron being harassed by red-winged
blackbirds in Dolph Park, Ann Arbor. I had never witnessed this behavior
between these species before.
The third is of a robin who found my suet cake to its liking -- also a new
behavior observation for me.
The last is of "my" resident white-crowned sparrow for the last three days,
which finally sat for a portrait session.

While in Idaho this past weekend, I had fun seeing magpies. I really =
wish we
could invite a few of them to come live out East here. My wife saw a big
flock of green-back swallows near our B&B; I kept an eye out for ravens,
which nest in the area, but didn=92t see any. Our B&B host told us that
hummingbirds are late arriving this year by about two to three weeks. =
The
area in question is that around Orofino, Idaho.

Subject: [birders] Morning Birds

Yellow-rumped and palm warblers in large numbers this morning in the =
yard,
and rough-winged swallows here at work. Also, the thrashers appear to =
be
settling in once again along our driveway easement where they've been
nesting for several years running.
