[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] birding around Detroit From: "garima bhatia" <garima.bhatia(AT)gmail.com> Date: 23 Apr 2008 8:09am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Hi fellow birders, I am an amateur birder based in Bangalore, India. I will be visiting the Detroit area on business for 2 weeks in May (weeks of May 5th and 12th) and am looking for suggestions on birding spots in the vicinity. I will be staying at a hotel in Warren, and will have access to a vehicle. On weekdays I would like to do some birding in the early morning/evening at a nearby location. I will have the weekend on May 10-11th for longer (half day/full day) birding trips at a reasonable driving distance. If possible do mail me back with suggestions on how to maximize my birding experience there, given that I have limited time. If you are free on any of the days, then it would be great to have company for birding as well. I have not done much birding in North America before... Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks and best regards, Garima --- * birders FAQ - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/birders_FAQ.html * photo sharing site - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html * To unsubscribe from birders(AT)umich.edu send a blank message to lyris(AT)listserver.itd.umich.edu with UNSUBSCRIBE BIRDERS as the Subject line. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] More Seasonal Arrivals and Departures From: Dave Sing <dsing(AT)umich.edu> Date: 23 Apr 2008 9:42am Howdy. A Wood duck drake sat in our Willow this morning, and a Grey treefrog was perched on the porch railing. White-throated sparrow still singing down the hollow, Fox sparrow digging beneath the Arborvitae. Juncos seem to have departed. Heard Yellow warbler at Trinkle marsh and at a wet spot on Jerusalem this morning. Also a nice Greater yellowlegs in aforementioned wet spot. Field sparrows and House wrens seem to have returned in earnest. Had a nice flyover of a Red-shouldered hawk near Saginaw woods ~8:30AM. Another day in paradise. Waterthrush, wildflowers, Nan Weston NP, Washtenaw Co. 4/23 From: "Dan Sparks-Jackson" <sparksjackson(AT)aol.com> Date: 23 Apr 2008 4:13pm Sandwiched between work and toddler-care duties, I managed a quick late morning visit to The Nature Conservancy's Nan Weston Nature Preserve on Easudes Road (just east of the intersection with Jacob Road). The birding was good; 1 Louisiana Waterthrush (singing) 1 Nashville Warbler 1 Black & White Warbler 2-3 Yellow-rumped Warblers 4 Yellow Warblers (singing, 1 at power line cut, others at river) 3 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers (grousing) and (again, just to remind me it is still April despite the warmth): 1 pert Dark-eyed Junco frolicking amongst the Hepaticas and Anemones The waterthrush was stridently singing along the north side of the loop which branches off west from the 'main' trail that leads to the River Raisin. His caroling rang like chimes off of the leafless woods. The spring-blooming flora at Nan Weston is set to peak in the next week or two. Today's inflorescences included: Spring Beauty, Anemone, Hepatica, Dutchman's Breeches, Bloodroot, Marsh Marigold, Violets, Spicebush, Winterhazel, and the first few Trillium blossoms. If you have a choice, don't spend it indoors. Please join the Washtenaw Audubon Society sponsored spring migration walks through Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor tomorrow morning. This event is free and open to the public, membership is not required. Feel free to join or leave the birding group whenever you wish. This is the third of eight Thursday morning walks. Details below. Nichols Arboretum for Spring Migration Apr 24, 2008 8:00 AM Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Riverview Drive cul-de-sac off Geddes Road. Bird the Arb from start to finish of spring migration. This is our second season of leaderless spring migration walks through the Arb and this field activity is well on the way to being an annual birding success. As with the fall migration walks, they are well-attended and you will have the opportunity to meet and enjoy birding with others. The Arb is fantastic for spring migration and should not be missed. Everyone will also have an opportunity to enjoy the spectacular trilliums that bloom throughout the Arb's wooded hillsides. These are leaderless walks, but there always some experienced birders along to help you with bird finding and identification. Don't be shy; introduce yourself and set out to acquaint yourselves with the beauty of Ann Arbor's central park. Visitors to Ann Arbor, you won't be disappointed. We left at 6:30 after 15-20 minutes of viewing. From the boat launch, walk south on the Cherry Island Marsh Trail (the = segment next to the lake) and head to the big bridge. The bird was east = of the bridge (lake side) and diving frequently. It would spend = literally a few seconds on the surface before diving again. It would = also come up quite a distance away from where it dove. In short, a quick = glance will not work. You must be patient and look. Viewing distance = was hard to estimate, but it was in the order of hundreds of yards a = times. Remember, from the bridge, you are up off of the water. This = certainy helped us keep track of the bird. The breeze made the water a = bit choppy. Good luck. The photos are okay at best, but I posted them because it's not every day you get to see a Barn Swallow skip off the top of a lake! I've also posted two other photos: one is of a Forster's Tern ruffling its feathers while preening, and the second one is of a Bonaparte's Gull flying overhead. I love the photo of the gull because of the beauty of the colors and patterns on the underside of its wing. All four photos were taken on Tuesday. Best wishes and good birding!
