Subject: [birders] Wild Turkeys
From: "Lathe Claflin" <lathe.claflin(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 12 Apr 2008 10:00am
All,
If you want to read a truly fabulous story about Wild Turkeys, get a
copy of Joe Hutto's, Illumination in the Flatwoods. You will come to
appreciate how smart these birds are. Copies are not easily obtained.
I think it is out of print, but it is worth a search.

Subject: [birders] Tom displaying near Pleasant Lake
From: Steve Malson <steve(AT)masoncommunitychurch.net>
Date: 12 Apr 2008 2:49pm
This morning a nice sized tom was displaying for a group of hen
turkeys including one that was probably semi-domestic stock She was
a mixed white/brown that make her look grayish. It was on Meridian
Road, a couple miles north of Territorial. I don't know if it would
be Leslie or Pleasant Lake there.
Over the next few weeks, it should be an easy sight throughout rural
Michigan.

Birders,
I did some birding this morning in Shiawassee and Clinton Counties. In eastern
Shiawassee County I had a field with well over 100 Lapland Longspurs; males in
stunning breeding plumage. This was just west of Durand on Newburg Rd. gps:
42.911932,-84.029102
In Clinton County I had a White-winged Scotor on Park Lake. There is a pull off
on the north side of the lake on Park Lake Rd. gps: 42.911932,-84.029102
Lots of other waterfowl on the lake as well.
Take care,

With some patience I was able to get some decent shots of a Horned Grebe at
Sleepy Hollow State Park in Clinton County today. Needless to say, some light
would have been helpful. As you may or may not know, once you get to the Grove
Street Album, you click on the photo to bring up just that single photo and the
included information. At that point you can click on the image again to enlarge
it (assuming the photographer did not crop it too much).

What this means for spring migration birders (after April 20) is that we
will not be able to use the hospital parking lot that's at the northwest
corner of the Arb. That's Lot M-29.
For parking alternatives see
http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/nichols_arb.html#maps
Nichols Drive is the road along the river in the Arb. (It's mislabeled
Nichols Arcade(!) in the Expedia.com map.)

Subject: [birders] Two photos posted to the Grove Street site...
From: BRapai(AT)aol.com
Date: 12 Apr 2008 8:24pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Friends:
I was scolded last time I posted a photo and did not notify the list, so...
I have just posted two new photos -- one of a Golden-crowned Kinglet and one
of a Mute Swan in a courting display -- to the Grove Street site. Both were
taken by me last Tuesday at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe
Shores. The kinglet photo is pretty cool - in my opinion - because it's so rare
to see a kinglet below eye level, let alone get a photo of one.
Best wishes to all.

Subject: [birders] Trumpeter or Tundra?
From: AJ Johnson <andysj531(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 12 Apr 2008 7:05pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Birders,
Cathy Carroll, Harold and Artemis Eyster and I went to Crane Creek Saturday,
which turned out to be quite productive, despite the showers. We came across a
pair of swans, which we called trumpeter, based on bill shape and large size
(they were very close and cooperative).
One of the two had no yellow, while the other had a small fleck in the lores
(There was also a dusky yellow shadow beneath this, and the exact pattern was
present on both left and right--Sibley says if trumpeter has pale in lores, it
is not symmetrical). While this would imply Tundra, everything else seemed to
point to trumpeter: 1. Bill length and angle in profile 2. The broad
connection between eye and bill 3. Head shape: crown slope matches bill
slope. Please see Sibley's notes: http://sibleyguides.com/swans.htm and photos
at Grovestreet:

Subject: [birders] Good Stuff on the Waterloo-Pinckney Trail
From: "Matt Yawney" <myawney(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 12 Apr 2008 11:04pm
I got out on the W-P Trail this afternoon walking north of N. Territorial
Rd. and had quite a nice time with lots of good birds and some new ones
for me for the year. Here's a list of the cooler stuff:
E. Towhee's (at least 2 heard, none seen)
Rusty Blackbirds (2)
Fox Sparrow (singing)
Hermit Thrush (making noise)
Both Kinglets (abundance of GK)
Cooper's Hawk
Ruffed Grouse (heard drumming)
Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker (brightest yellow I've ever seen for this bird)
I think that I have seen more YB Sapsuckers this week than I've seen my
entire life. One 5 separate occasions(all in separate locations) I have
seen at least one or more of this species.
Anyway, it was a lot of fun today. The majority of the action was around
the 1st boardwalk (from N. Lyndon Park).
