Subject: [birders] Cormorant on Barton Pond?
From: <David.Blank(AT)lyondellbasell.com>
Date: 9 Apr 2008 6:04am
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
While driving by the Boat Club on Barton Shore Drive yesterday around 5
pm, I thought I saw a cormorant perched atop the round white buoy
offshore. I didn't have my binoculars with me, but the bird was all
dark (black) and its profile fit a cormorant. Is this possible? =20

Absolutely! It's spring! I remember seeing my 2007 annual
Double-crested Cormorant on that very buoy.

I saw my first chipping sparrow of the spring yesterday while walking the

for 2008, both in the protected area behind the house. Yellow-bellied
sapsuckers also continue to be moving through the area.

Subject: [birders] Trinkle Marsh, Washtenaw Co., 4/9AM
From: "Dan Sparks-Jackson" <sparksjackson(AT)aol.com>
Date: 9 Apr 2008 9:05am
My morning commute takes me right by Trinkle Marsh. A breeding plumage
Ruddy Duck (blue bill and all) has been hanging out there for about a
week. Today the Ruddy was joined by one drake Wood Duck, one drake
Ring-necked Duck, a pair of Buffleheads and a lone Pied-billed Grebe. The
diversity and especially the numbers of waterfowl at this location are
down as compared to Aprils in recent years.
There was also a lone Barn Swallow perched with five Tree Swallows on a
low snag over the water. They seemed to be waiting for the breeze to
slacken, the temperature to rise, or both. I hope they can tank up prior
to this weekend's predicted weather.

I saw a Pine Warbler this AM at MUCC in the Waterloo Rec Area. It was
associating with a Pine Siskin. I also saw a YB Sapsucker in the same
vicinity, and a Winter Wren on my walk back to the Discovery Center. The
Discovery Center still has at least one pair of Purple Finches hanging
around its feeders.

Subject: [birders] RE: Construction to Despoil Superior Road Bridge

Mike,

Actually I remember seeing a sign announcing there was to be a development =
on this northeast of the bridge site for several years. That fact does not =
assuage my concerns about the habitat there at all. The direction of develo=
pment and habitat degradation or loss is only going in one direction that i=
s constantly upwards.
=20
Sure we can lose another good waterfowl stop such as Superior Road Bridge a=
nd we can honestly say by itself is no big deal but the aggregate pattern i=
s quite significant and troubling. A further fact that troubles me greatly =
is that since habitat loss occurs typically in small incremental amounts th=
at it does not bother people and they quickly adapt to these changes which =
become the new normal. Habitat destruction and degradation has been massive=
in our area since human populations built up here and people apparently ig=
nore it, don't notice it or don't care. If all the development that has occ=
urred in southeast Michigan in the past 30 years happened overnight, most o=
f us would be truly shocked and could not pretend that it was not happening=
.

When would the 'state of the Economy' argument not apply as a reason for gi=

Subject: [birders] Arboretum: Pine Warbler death match
From: "Joseph W. Brown" <josephwb(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 9 Apr 2008 2:40pm
I found two male Pine Warblers near the hospital entrance to the
Arboretum in Ann Arbor today (14:00). They chased each other
constantly, and at least three times connected in the air and fell to
the ground, where they continued to fight. In the treetops an
individual would start singing and would immediately be attacked by an
assailant who seemed to come out of nowhere. To find them, take the
right-most path when entering from the hospital entrance, heading up
the hill behind the Burnham House/Reader Center. Take a right towards
the logged area and there you are. Incidentally, what is with the
logging? Every year the Arboretum looks more and more like a golf
course.
I also saw a Common Yellowthroat in the graveyard, as well as plenty
of Hermit Thrushes and Golden-crowned Kinglets.
Joseph.

Birders,
Me and my mom took a day trip to Crane Creek today (Wednesday). Overall it was
very productive and although quite windy, it was a beautiful day. It was my
first trip to Crane Creek, and I was not disappointed. We ended with 62
species, including a PALM WARBLER (among many Yellow-rumped) on the trails
behind the Bird Center, along with a MERLIN and a BROWN THRASHER in the same
vicinity. Other interesting birds included both SAW-WHET and SCREECH owls along
the boardwalk, a SORA heard from the boardwalk platform, a YB SAPSUCKER, WINTER
WRENS, BROWN CREEPERS, N. HARRIER, TOWHEES, FOX SPARROWS, a CASPIAN TERN and
many BALD EAGLES. GADWALLS and SHOVELERS were abundant, and the boardwalk was
absolutely swarming with hundreds of brave HERMIT THRUSHES. Interestingly, we
did not have any Nuthatches, Chickadees, or Carolina Wrens whatsoever.

Birders,
A few nice birds arrived on the Rouge River channel and the TPC golf
course pond today. Yesterday only Golden-crowned Kinglets, Yellow-
rumped Warblers, Song Sparrows aplenty, Hooded Mergs and kingfisher
were present among the expected birds. This evening I found Hermit
Thrush, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Barn Swallows, Northern Rough-winged
Swallows, a pretty jazzy male Yellow-rumped and Savannah Sparrow.
Good birding,

Once again this year a red-winged blackbird has taken up residence in the
marshy area of West Park. The marsh has grasses/reeds and is almost always
wet, serving as a rain garden. It's right next to the steep hill on the
South side of the park, so this blackbird doesn't have to limit his singing
to the top of a reed. He can sing from the branch of a tree that is halfway
up the hill, which is why it took me about five minutes to locate him today.
No binoculars needed; you can get quite close if you don't mind getting your
feet wet. He was sending out announcements about every two minutes.

Subject: [birders] Arb Highlights, 5:30-7 p.m. Heron?
From: lisalk(AT)umich.edu
Date: 9 Apr 2008 11:54pm
Above Heathdale: About 5:30 p.m., a pair of yellow-bellied
sapsuckers worked several deciduous trees.
On the river past the bridge: Floating bobber-like on
a strong current, a male common merganser nailed a fish.
As he moved downstream, he dove, clasping his catch,
and emerged upstream with the wriggling fish. Several
times, the merganser repeated the downstream-upstream dance.
A female merganser swam beside him for less than a minute
and continued downstream. He stayed his course. Then he
swam very close to the north bank where there was almost
no current--at which point he downed the fish and headed
eastward, back into the mainstream.
Along the river, heading east (north of blacktop):
Abundant yellow rumps, both male and female
Wood ducks, flyover south of river by Dow Prairie
Tree swallows, about three dozen
Barn swallow
Bluebirds, male and female
About 7 p.m., a great-blue-heron-like bird flew southeast
over Dow Prairie. The general color, wing beats, body shape
and legs carried behind the body in flight appeared to indicate
a great blue heron.
But its head was all white. Utterly.
I could not make out crown or bill color, or see plumes. Was this a
breeding GBH adult? A morph? Or??
