Subject: [birders] Cherry Hill Preserve - Monday afternoon
From: "CJ McDonald" <cjmcd77(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 8 Apr 2008 12:10am
This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
I spent almost three hours at Cherry Hill Preserve today, and saw a good mix
of birds. To wit,
Turkey Vultures
Red-tailed Hawk
Red-bellied Woodpeckers
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
Tree Swallows
Black-capped Chickadees
White-breasted Nuthatch
Winter Wren
Golden-crowned Kinglet
E Bluebirds
Am Robins
Cedar Waxwings - a group of six or so
Yellow-rumped Warblers - several
Black-and-White Warbler - slightly early?
Song Sparrows - many heard
N Cardinal
Am Goldfinch
The swamp north of the entrance (down the trail to the left, at marker #9)
was VERY loud with chorus frogs, with a few wood frogs in the mix. There
were ribbon snakes in the dead leaves near every body of water, and I saw
one eastern garter snake in the preserve and one dead on Cherry Hill Rd. I
saw many mourning cloaks, and a few smaller butterflies whose names I
unfortunately don't know.
A red squirrel was the star of the day. It was absolutely apoplectic in its
annoyance at my presence, bouncing on its forelegs, chattering like a
monkey, and running down its tree to threaten a run at me. I feared for my
life, but watched for a long time in the hope that its relentless racket
would attract hawks or owls, possibly from other continents. It kept up the
noise till I was maybe 200 yards away.
Note for potential visitors: many of the trails are very wet. Although you
will usually be able to step on clumps of grass to avoid soaking, there are
a few spots where your choice is to submerge or turn back. (I suppose I
shouldn't rule out walking ON water, flying, and having a companion toss his
coat across the water.) I also don't recommend wearing a heavy Gore-tex
raincoat on a 70-degree day -- but you probably already knew that.
Jim McDonald

WHAT: Ann Arbor Parks Breeding Bird Survey Kickoff
WHEN: Thursday, April 10 at 7:30 PM
WHERE:Leslie Science and Nature Center(in the Leslie House)
1831 Traver Road
Ann Arbor, MI
Dear Birders,
You are the folks who help survey our Ann Arbor parks and nature areas
for breeding birds. You do this by volunteering to walk through the
park of your choice on a regular basis during the breeding season and
make observations of the birds that are there. We use the information
to help the Natural Areas Preservation Division of the city of Ann
Arbor with parks management. This year, we are hoping to get some
information about migrants as well. Join us on April 10th as we show
you how to participate in our Breeding Bird Survey and share the
information from past surveys. This will also be the time to lay claim
to the park you'd like to cover! Please call 734-996-3266 for more
information or you can respond to this email or simply join us!

The elevator tower at UM Hospital where the peregrines have been hanging
out is visible from the bus stop behind Markley dorm on East Medical
Center Drive if you don't want to go into the hospital courtyard. At
least two of the primary perches the birds have been using are visible.
I've been seeing the peregrines on the elevator tower or its ledges in the
9:30-11:30 range. I haven't seen them in the afternoon the times I've
checked, but I can't see the tower from my desk, so they might still be
there occasionally.

It is more likely that the butterfly you saw was a Mourning Cloak. They can=
be described as a basically black butterfly with off-whitish or yellowish =
fringing around the edges of the wings. The first butterflies of the year a=
re all overwinters--adult butterflies that hibernate locally--and in southe=
ast Michigan are either Mourning Cloaks, Eastern Commas, Gray Commas, Milbe=
rt's Tortoiseshells, or Compton's Tortoiseshells. Two other adult overwinte=
rers the Red Admiral and the Question Mark may possibly also occur ( one ea=
rly record of Red Admiral and a mid-April Question Mark sighting.)
=20
Black Swallowtails spend the winter in a chrysalis and first emerge in late=
April or early May. The first butterfly species to emerge from the pupal s=
tage are Cabbage Whites and Spring Azures. With the warm weather we are hav=
ing now, someone is bound to find of these butterflies very soon.

Sapsuckers (one male and one female), a Hermit Thrush, Several Flickers, one
Eastern Phoebe and one lone Tree Swallow did a flyover of our backyard while
on the way home. Not new but still cool were several Brown Creepers, Red
Bellied WP, several Downeys, a pair of Wood Ducks on the vernal pond and
several WB Nuthatches. Also seen from the back yard were a pair of Red
Tailed Hawks doing what may have been a mating flight? Diving and swooping
at each other with talons out! Pretty cool! Spring is definately here!

Subject: [birders] Construction to Despoil Superior Road Bridge Area
for migrating waterfowl?
From: Roger Kuhlman <rkuhlman(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 8 Apr 2008 2:36pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
I was recently by the Superior Road Bridge north of Ypsilanti where it cros=
ses the Huron River and I unhappy to report that frontage area northeast of=
the bridge seems to be being cleared for construction of some sort. Develo=
pment here will inevitably further degrade the riverine habitat and make th=
e Huron River at this point far less attractive for migrating waterfowl. Th=
at is really too bad because this area has been a good spot for both overwi=
ntering and Spring Migration Waterfowl. During the past few years a number =
of rarities have shown up here. But as the kindhearted and sensitive develo=
per says we must have a 'balance' between the needs of man and nature with =
Homo sapiens greedicus winning 99.5% of the time and all the rest of living=
things on Earth getting 0.5%. Balance indeed!

Hi Birders,

Visited the Arb this morning. Parked at Riverview Drive entrance and walke=
d along Dow Field, taking second rustic trail to left and found the Winter =
Wren Karen M reported yesterday. This is the trail with the Rhododendron g=
lump of bushes. The bird was opposite the R. glump on right side of trail =
in thicket and back and forth to half way up the trail. Watched it for 8-1=
0 minutes, nice show.
=20
Also, lots of Yellow rumps in Arb, mostly on this trail and down by river w=
here School Girls Glen meets road by river.=20

Golden-crowned Kinglets were numerous. Had a few Ruby-crowned Kinglets als=

Had a flyover Osprey with a large bright orange colored carp in its talons.=

Subject: [birders] Arb (2008/4/08) including Pine & Yellow-rumped
warblers
From: Karen Markey <ylime(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 8 Apr 2008 3:35pm
Today's highlight was the burst of Pine warbler activity at what
remains of the pine stand a little east of the Washington Heights
entrance and north of the peony garden. I assume the 2 birds were male
and female Pine warblers flying around and around the tops of the pine
stand, latching together beak-to-beak, free-falling to earth, then
sprinting up into and zipping around the pine tops. What a show!
Tuesday's notable birds:
Yellow-bellied sapsuckers
Hairy woodpeckers (very vocal again today)
Wood ducks
Red-tailed hawk (harassed by lone crow)
Hermit thrushes
Golden-crowned kinglets
Red-breasted nuthatches
Brown creepers
Yellow-rumped warblers

Area for migrating waterfowl?
From: "makielb(AT)excite.com" <makielb@excite.com>
Date: 8 Apr 2008 4:26pm
Hi all:
There will indeed be some construction going on Superior Rd, mostly at the north
end. The development sign that Roger referred to has been there for over a
year to the best of my knowledge (I drive Superior four times a week), with the
state of the economy I wouldn't worry too much. There will be additional
construction at the north end where it meets Geddes- a new 'round-a-bout' which
should prove interesting, at the least.
Yesterday I had an OSPREY at Superior and the Huron River.

Did anyone catch todays news reports regard the late Charleton Hestons' =
unoccupied Northern Michigan home?
While they were panning around the interior rooms, in plain sight was an =
Eastern Phoebe on a window ledge! I assume and it appeared inside not =
out. Probably has designs on nesting in there! They will do this. We =
had it happen several times in our abandoned old cabin up in Kalkaska =
county we now use for storage. One year on a curtain rod, one year on =
the old hanging light that was over the kitchen table! Both successful =
nests. 20 plus years ago before the new cabin, we shared summers with =
them as they nested on a ledge in the "outhouse" facility which was what =
we used back then! Mutual Coexsistence!

even able to watch it eat a fish! I took several pics and will post some

Forgot to add this: the loon was at the end of the lake near the dam (and
Newburgh Rd). We walked down the path that led to the floating fishing
pier and the loon was right there. However, the pier seems to have
floated away! At the closest, the bird was 15 feet from us.

Birders,
While traveling through the Chelsea area, I made a stop at the flooded field
by Teahan Rd. and M-52 that produced so many nice ducks last year. Today at
10AM there was only one pair of Ring-necked Ducks with the Mallards and
Canada Geese. There was a Lesser Yellowlegs however with a few Killdeer.
Many of the flooded swampy areas along the roads held Wood Ducks. There was
nothing unusual to note at the Discovery Center feeders at Waterloo.

Birders,
The walks start day after tomorrow, Thursday, April 10th. Currently
seeing Yellow-rumped and Pine warblers. Winter Wren and Yellow-
bellied Sapsucker (a beautiful bird anytime, but especially in
spring) are also around. I'm sure there are others as well.
Nichols Arboretum for Spring Migration
Apr 10 2008
8:00 AM
Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Riverview Drive cul-de-sac off Geddes Road.
Bird the Arb from start to finish of spring migration. This is our
second season of leaderless spring migration walks through the Arb
and this field activity is well on the way to being an annual birding
success. As with the fall migration walks, they are well-attended and
you will have the opportunity to meet and enjoy birding with others.
The Arb is fantastic for spring migration and should not be missed.
Everyone will also have an opportunity to enjoy the spectacular
trilliums that bloom throughout the Arb's wooded hillsides.
These are leaderless walks. Don't be shy; introduce yourself and set
out to acquaint yourselves with the beauty of Ann Arbor's central
park. Visitors to Ann Arbor, you won't be disappointed.

For the past 7 years, I have help guide and manage a bird box trail for
Bluebirds and Swallows at Fox Hills Golf Club in Salem Township on North
Territorial. Together we have helped to fledge over 1000 bluebirds and an equal
number of tree swallows. The owners of this property have adjusted everything
they do to help the environment but remain in business. NO insecticide, and no
blanket spraying along with the planting of many native species. They remain
one of a number of Michigan golf courses certified by Audubon International.
www.auduboninternational.com
However, this year my job requirements are interfering with my passion at Fox
Hills and I am looking to the members of this group for help if possible. We
are looking for several helpers who can help monitor and clean out the boxes (at
the right time) as well as keep statistics about the number of eggs/chicks and
unfortunately predators. Training will be provided. For your efforts you are
rewarded with occasional brunch passes or golf passes. They would also love to
participate in the 'Big Day' compatition between certified properties, that
falls on the same day as the national count day in May.
They are also interested in continuing to build thier relationship with nature
by adding martin houses, bat houses and taking other steps to increase the
natural appeal of the property. They are open to all ideas and have an annual
meeting to discuss new ideas.
If you can help us, please contact Eric Neimer (ericn(AT)foxhills.com or phone
734-927-1035) at fox hills or feel free to contact me off-list.
Thank-you
Keith Miller
