[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] No March Butterflies--None! From: Roger Kuhlman <rkuhlman(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 4 Apr 2008 9:16am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- The first butterflies of the 2008 Season in southeast Michigan finally show= ed up on April 2 and 3. On April 2 Faye Stoner found two Mourning Cloaks at= Leonard's Preserve in southwest Washtenaw County near Manchester. The next= day I had 12 Mourning Cloaks and 1 Eastern Comma in a woodlot Dhu Varren W= oods in Ann Arbor. =20 These are incredibly late, first season sightings for butterflies by recent= standards. In checking back through the records of the Greater Washtenaw C= ounty Survey, every year since 1994 one or more butterflies were reported i= n the month of March. One year we even had a February butterfly! The weathe= r in March was pretty weird. There was much more snow than normal and fewer= sunny days. Temperatures were almost always in the below normal range and = the very few times it got up into 50's--when over-wintering butterflies suc= h the Mourning Cloak or the Eastern Comma could potentialy emerge from thei= r hibernation to fly around--the woods were either still covered with snow = or the day was cloudy and windy. =20 It will be interesting to see whether the butterfly season catches up more = back to normal as Spring progresses. =20 Roger Kuhlman Ann Arbor, Michigan 4/4/2008= --- * birders FAQ - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/birders_FAQ.html * photo sharing site - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html * To unsubscribe from birders(AT)umich.edu send a blank message to lyris(AT)listserver.itd.umich.edu with UNSUBSCRIBE BIRDERS as the Subject line. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Ospreys in Kensington From: "Sherlock, Ken" <KSherlock(AT)ahla.com> Date: 4 Apr 2008 10:44am I noticed a pair of ospreys nesting on a platform in the Huron River in Kensington near the Milford Road entrance yesterday. I was fortunate enough to have one of the pair fly nearby with a fish in its talons. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] More Spring Arrivals From: Fred Kaluza <fkaluza(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 4 Apr 2008 7:49am Yesterday I had a Flicker on the telephone pole doing his "Wicka-Wicka-Wicks" thing. He also flew down and checked out a nestbox that's there. He went inside for a minute then flew out and resumed calling from a higher treetop. Unfortunately, Starlings had entered that same box 1/2 hour earlier so now they both know it's available and I'm sure the Starlings will do their best and probably win out without my intervention. Even though I can keep the Starlings away, it's tough to get the Flicker to accept the box after their eggs were tossed out by the Starlings once already last year. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] falcon web cam From: laurent fournier <laurentfournier2003(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 4 Apr 2008 4:59am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Hi All Two pelegrine falcons are nesting in a tower owned by a power company, in Fort Wayne (where my week job is). A web cam was installed and can be checked at: http://www.aep.com/environmental/education/falconcam/birdcam.asp I found pretty interesting that logos of DNR and the power company are visible on the back of the nest. After the "Ford Stadium", here is the "Indianamichiganpower nest" Have a great birding week end Laurent Fournier Cell : 1 734 709 3153 ____________________________________________________________________________________ You rock. They will be in Michigan soon! = Once they arrive, I'll be mapping the reports on my own website at: = http://www.amazilia.net/MIHummerNet/Data2008.htm. I hope you will report = your arrivals to me at the e-mail address below if you haven't already = reported them to <hummingbirds.net>. I typically suggest putting out = your hummingbird feeder(s) no later than April 15 as the earliest = confirmed arrival in the state is April 8, though I do also have a few = unconfirmed March reports (not this year!). If you see a hummingbird = before April 15, please try to obtain a photo! And, last year saw a = record number of April reports in the UP too. Thanks! Allen T. They = did look an awful lot like turkeys, but I would be surprised if thats = what they really were. It was getting dark and I could not make out much = detail. Their head silhouettes hinted more of a thick, decurved bill. = Several years ago, we saw an exotic or domestically raised bird of = similar size that was some type of pheasant or peahen in the area. They seemed oblivious to the fact that I drove right up alongside them. I took a number of photographs of them, but this one's my favorite.
