Subject: [birders] WAY OT: need help for sister with infestation of
invisible mites
From: "Sally K Scheer" <winerat(AT)villagecorner.com>
Date: 2 Apr 2008 12:32am
I need help for my sister from someone who knows how to get rid of mites.
MSU entomologist could not help. Anyone on this list who can help or knows
someone who could help? She and her husband are a mass of welts and bites
and creepy crawly sensations.

Subject: [birders] Hairy Woodpecker question
From: jochen roeder <joroeder(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 2 Apr 2008 10:59am
Hi there,
I have a question regarding Hairy Woodpeckers.
I quite frequently encountered Hairies loosely
accompanying other species of woodpecker, e.g.
Pileated and Black-backed, and recently read that
others have made the same observation, too.
Could this be more than coincidence? Is there an
ecological strategy behind this?
Thanks very much and good birding!

Subject: [birders] OT: Salamander Hunt?
From: "Vincent Ste-Marie" <v_ste.marie(AT)sbcglobal.net>
Date: 2 Apr 2008 9:47am
Birders (Salamander Hunters???)
I'm currently off-list and only this morning was on 'birding-on-the-net' and
saw the post regarding this past Monday's 'salamander walk' at Hudson Mills.
Did anyone go and what were the results? If memory serves, the park closes
at 10PM. With sunset around 8PM, maybe tonight will still work?
Vince

Birders,
A few nest box questions -
- what is the best way to secure this huge box to a tree or poll
- is there a best direction (if any) to point the box (my gut feel
was facing south?)
- what time of year do the screech owls nest versus when the
kestrels nest
Feel free to respond off list.

Subject: [birders] Dolp Nature area birds
From: ddarm(AT)umich.edu
Date: 2 Apr 2008 10:34am
Dolph Nature Area Workday
1:00 PM- 4 PM
On Sunday April 6 at 1:00 PM at Dolph Nature Area there will be an
opportunity to help spruce up the place for all of you who enjoy
birding the site in April and May. We'll do a bit of trail trimming,
open up some sight lines and put down some wood chips. Please come out
and help us, especially if you have an idea of what you'd like to see
done! We'll take as much time as you can give us. And thanks in advance
for giving back! Meet at the Parklake entrance, south of the docks.
Bird Report:
On my walk through there yesterday I found my first Phoebe of the year
and counted up to 20(!) Song Sparrows around the marshy area by First
Sister Lake. Female Red-winged Blackbirds were back. The Second Sister
Lake was still mostly ice covered but I don't think it will last much
longer. See you on Sunday. Please call 734-996-3266 for more
information or email me.

Subject: [birders] Re: OT: Salamander Hunt?
From: songsparrow(AT)wowway.com
Date: 2 Apr 2008 11:06am
Vince,
I did go, as did many others, and we found many (20-30?) Spotted
Salamanders, a few Blue-spotted Salamanders w/ the possibility of Jefferson
hybridization amongst these, and one Red-backed Salamander in "lead" phase.
Additionally, we saw a few Spring Peepers, one Ribbon snake and two Garter
snakes. We were lucky that evening. A heavy rain fell for 1 hour+ just
before the walk and it continued to drizzle during the walk. The temp
remained desirable. I seem to remember reading on the sign at the entrance
that the park closes at 8pm. Please don't take my word for this - I'd call
about park closing times.

I'm sorry, Lathe. That's why I labeled it WAY OT. However, I must point out
that one of the sources of this infestation that has been mentioned by the
medical people she has so far consulted is indeed wild birds. If it turns
out that's really the case, it will have a great deal to do with birds.

From: ldnum(AT)umich.edu

Actually, this may be way on topic for birders-
I bet these "mites" are chiggers, but even if these culprits are not
chiggers, the topic needs airing.
For those who have not been introduced to chiggers, Wikipedia
(<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvest_mite>) tells all (or at least
most). Some people get sensitized to their activities in/on/under our skin
and can develop bad rashes when attacked by them.
As a kid, I found that dusting my lower legs and pants legs with sulfur
powder worked very well to keep them at bay. Clear nail polish worked well
to suffocate them at their irritated activity sites. Modern pediatricians
have better ideas:
but that's what worked for me.
There is hope- as I have gotten older, chiggers have decided that I do not
taste good anymore, so they mostly leave me alone.

I saw my first White Throated Sparrow on the 31st. May be common to some

sparrow remains, as do a few Juncos. Have some unidentified trilling.
Robins have staked their claim to my yard. Not much chance for viewing
lately.

Roger Kuhlman has been seeing our two on the ledges of the U.
hospital. Now I have gotten a reliable account that they are hanging
out on the elevator towers of the hospital, eating birds and leaving
whitewash. to see them you would need to be between Mott Children's
Hospital and the main hospital in a large courtyard (where the red
tail hunts giant chipmunks). Possible you could see these elevator
shafts from Observatory
Drive, I'll check.

This presumed new location at the hospital is unknown for habitat success.
Some have suggested that the Bell Tower nesting site was actually in the
rain gutters. Not a good spot for eggs during a severe storm.

Subject: [birders] Sandhill Cranes in Oakland County
From: "Joseph E. Faggan" <jfaggan(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 2 Apr 2008 4:32pm
This afternoon there was one bird at Indian Springs,
at one of their customary hangouts, namely the small
artificial pond down the trail that goes south--I
think it's south--from the Nature Center building. At
any rate, it's the trail with the bridge that's
visible from the start of the trail. Later I saw a
single crane overhead as I drove down the main road of
the Highland State Rec. Area.

Subject: [birders] Jochen Roeder's Hairy Woodpecker Question
From: Alan Ryff <alryff(AT)sbcglobal.net>
Date: 2 Apr 2008 4:41pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
In response to Jochen Roeder's interesting question of whether there is an
ecological strategy of smaller woodpeckers associating with the Pileated
Woodpecker--the answer, judging by my observations, is yes.
The Pileated by means of its greater strength and larger bill creates feeding
opportunities for the smaller woodpeckers. The Pileated digs deeper into the
heartwood, thereby, exposing unreachable ant colonies, and in short time, it
splits open bark still too tight to be easily removed by the smaller
woodpeckers. Down South in winter, I once watched a Pileated digging
energetically into wood at mid canopy. Immediately upon its departure, there
was a line up of woodpeckers, each taking its turn to carefully inspect the
Pileated's work--starting with the Red-bellieds and the Red-headeds, then the
Hairies, and last of all the Downies. All of this was done probably within the
space of 15 minutes. Why turn down the possibility of groceries when you either
don't have to do all the hard work or are incapable of it?
