Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for March 2,
2006. This report covers the period from February 21st to March 2nd and will be
updated on March 9th.
Two TUNDRA SWAN were reported in Coventry, seen from Old Flat River Road on
the Flat River Reservoir on the 23rd. On the 21st at this spot, 3 BALD EAGLES
were observed.
At the farm fields at Dunns Corner Road in Westerly on the 25th, 2 GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were reported. Also on that day at Weekapaug, 1
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was observed. Other birds from Westerly included: at
Moore
Woods, 13 EASTERN MEADOWLARK and at Watch Hill Lighthouse 14 SNOW BUNTING and 1
drake HARLEQUIN DUCK on the 24th.
At the East Providence Reservoir, on the 1st, 1 adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULL on the ice close to the road, south of the causeway. At Watchemoket Cove
in
East Providence, 3 BLACK-HEADED GULL on the 23rd.
On the 25th at Sachuest Point in Middletown, 1 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, and at
Beavertail Point in Jamestown, 5 RAZORBILL were seen that day.
At Ninigret NWR on the 28th, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 1 AMERICAN WOODCOCK, 1
HERMIT THRUSH, 4 EASTERN BLUEBIRD and 2 FOX SPARROW.
A report of 2 BALD EAGLES was received from Ram Point Marina in upper Salt
Pond in the village of Wakefield on the 28th.
In Carolina, in the pasture at the top of Shannock Hill Road, 30 WILD TURKEY
on the 28th.
The total number of species reported as of February stands at 157, with 10
new species added in February.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for March 9,
2006. This report covers the period from March 3rd to March 9th and will be
updated on March 16th.
The two TUNDRA SWAN were reported again in Coventry, seen from Old Flat River
Road on the Flat River Reservoir on the 3rd, and on the 8th, a WOOD DUCK was
sighted. Also in Coventry, at Johnson's Pond, 1 EURASIAN WIGEON was reported
on the 6th. On the 8th, at the corner of New London Turnpike and Ten Rod Road,
1 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER. Flying over Route 95 between exit 7 and 8, also
in Coventry, on the 6th, 1 COMMON RAVEN.
Two EVENING GROSBEAK were observed on the ground below the feeders at the
farm house along Ponagansett Road in Foster on the
9th.
On the 8th, at the East Providence Reservoir, 2 GLAUCOUS GULL, 1 ICELAND GULL
and 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL. On the 9th, 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and 1
GLAUCOUS GULL was reported. On the 5th, 1 REDHEAD was reported along with 1
PIED-BILLED GREBE, 7 NORTHERN PINTAIL and 82 RUDDY DUCK. At Watchemoket Cove
in East Providence on the 6th, 2 BLACK-HEADED GULL.
At Sachuest Point in Middletown on the 5th, 11 HARLEQUIN DUCK, 5 LONG-TAILED
DUCK and 2 GREAT CORMORANT. BRANT have also
been seen here in numbers, and have been reported at other coastal locations
this week. On the 5th, 1 YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT on Mitchell's Lane, about 1/4
mile north of Third Beach Road in Middletown and at Norman Bird Sanctuary that
day, 1 BROWN THRASHER, 3 HERMIT THRUSH and 1 GREAT HORNED OWL
In Perryville on the 8th, 1 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was sighted.
Nine SNOW GEESE were reported from Tiverton on the 9th.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for March 16,
2006. This report covers the period from March 10th to March 16th and will be
updated on March 23rd.
The 2 female EVENING GROSBEAK at the feeder at the farm house along
Ponagansett Road in Foster that were found on the 9th, were seen again, briefly,
on the
10th.
Two COMMON RAVEN were observed landing on a building next to Route 99 on the
Woonsocket-Cumberland line on the 16th.
Birders along on a cod trip out of Galilee on the 11th observed the
following: 61 NORTHERN GANNET, 12 COMMON MURRE, 25 DOVEKIE, 210 RAZORBILL, 1
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE and 1 BONAPARTE'S GULL.
At the Great Swamp Management Area in South Kingstown on the 11th, 1 OSPREY,
20 WOOD DUCK, 5 GREEN-WINGED TEAL and 8 RING-NECKED DUCK. On the 15th, 4
EASTERN PHOEBE, 8 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and 2 OSPREY were seen there.
At Napatree Point in Westerly on the 15th, 2 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 80
BRANT, 1 COMMON LOON, 2 HORNED GREBE, 3 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 4 SANDERLING, 115
DUNLIN and 4 HORNED LARK.
Reported from the East Providence Reservoir during the past week, 2 GLAUCOUS
GULL, 1 ICELAND GULL, 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULL, 1 PIED-BILLED GREBE, 10 GREAT CORMORANT, 30 TREE SWALLOW, 2
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 7 NORTHERN PINTAIL, 8 WOOD DUCK and 1 NORTHERN SHOVELER.
On the 11th, a EURASIAN WIGEON was seen in Mill Pond along Route 1 in South
Kingstown.
Along Ocean Drive in Newport, near entrance to Castle Hill, 1 BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE was observed on the 16th.
A GREAT EGRET was reported in Little Compton on the 14th.
Two LONG-TAILED DUCK were reported on the 15th. One was seen in Greenwich
Bay, north of Sally Rock, and a second was spotted in Narragansett Bay, near the
North end of Prudence Island.
AMERICAN WOODCOCK were widely reported this week, and EASTERN PHOEBE was
noted in several areas as well.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for March 23,
2006. This report covers the period from March 17th to March 23rd and will be
updated on March 30th.
The 2 female EVENING GROSBEAK at the feeder at the farm house along
Ponagansett Road in Foster that were found on the 9th, continue to be reported.
They
were observed at the feeder, or in the pine tree near the house on the 18th,
19th, 20th, and 22nd.
A PILEATED WOODPECKER was seen in the Escoheag section of the Arcadia
Management in West Kingston. It was seen near the old picnic shelter near
Stepstone
Falls. Also seen that day was a NORTHERN GOSHAWK over Breakheart Pond.
Another sighting of NORTHERN GOSHAWK came from Hope Valley, near the town
hall on the 20th.
On the 19th a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen along Route 95, near exit 8.
On the 21st, at the Carolina hatchery in Charlestown, 2 WINTER WREN, 6 WOOD
DUCK and 5 EASTERN PHOEBE.
Two AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER were reported from Rose Island on the 22nd.
At the Chafee NWR in Narragansett on the 21st, 1 GREAT EGRET a FOX SPARROW.
On the 21st at the East Providence Reservoir, 1 PIED-BILLED GREBE, 25 WOOD
DUCK, 23 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 11 NORTHERN PINTAIL, 2 AMERICAN WIGEON, 2 GADWALL, 2
RINGED-NECKED DUCK, 1 RUDDY DUCK, 9 COMMON MERGANSER, 19 KILLDEER and 34
TREE SWALLOW.
On the Woonsocket-Cumberland line, 2 COMMON RAVEN were spotted on the 20th.
On the 18th, 2 PEREGRINE FALCON were seen on the Newport Bridge.
A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen in Jamestown on the entry road into Fort
Getty, and on the 17th, and a BALD EAGLE was seen just north of Great Creek in
Jamestown that day.
At the Great Swamp Management Area on the 18th, 5 EASTERN PHOEBE, 1 WILSON'S
SNIPE, several WOOD DUCK, 1 OSPREY, 1 AMERICAN KESTREL and several EASTERN
BLUEBIRDS.
The first report of PIPING PLOVER were of 2 birds seen in Middletown on the
20th.
Finally, 16 WILD TURKEY were found on Old Boston Neck Road in Narragansett,
near the URI Bay Campus.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for March 30,
2006. This report covers the period from March 24th to March 30th and will be
updated on April 6th.
Three reports of PILEATED WOODPECKER this week. On the 25th, at the Lincoln
Woods State Park entrance in Lincoln, about 100 feet up the dirt path across
from the parking area there was a sighting, and on the 30th, a PILEATED
WOODPECKER was found at High Rock Farm off Scott Road in Cumberland. Also on
the
30th, on was sighted in Chepachet, along with a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER.
More reports of COMMON RAVEN in Rhode Island this week. This used to be a
very rare bird a few years ago, however they are making a startling push into
the area. One was seen in Scituate on the 25th, near the intersection of Route
6 and Route 101, and that same day one was seen in Hopkinton, over Long Pond.
A PINE WARBLER was seen at Long Pond on the 30th.
On the 24th at Genesse Swamp along the South County Bike Path in South
Kingstown, 18 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 2 EASTERN PHOEBE, 1 BELTED KINGFISHER, 1 GREAT
BLUE
HERON, 2 WOOD DUCK and 1 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET. On the 30th, 1 WILSON'S
SNIPE, 1 EASTERN BLUEBIRD, 6 WOOD DUCK, 12 GREEN-WINGED TEAL and 5 YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLER were found there. At the Great Swamp Management area, 1 PECTORAL
SANDPIPER and 2 WILSON'S SNIPE were observed on the 30th.
At Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem, 1 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER was seen on the
27th, and on the 30th a SNOWY EGRET was reported.
The first GREAT EGRET of the year were reported on the 30th. One at
Winnapaug Pond in Westerly, and one in Jamestown.
At Napatree Point in Westerly on the 27th, 90 BRANT, 7 COMMON EIDER, 4 BLACK
SCOTER, 20 SURF SCOTER, 5 COMMON LOON, 10 HORNED
GREBE, 5 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 8 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 1 RUDDY TURNSTONE,
18 SANDERLING, 29 PURPLE SANDPIPER, 55 DUNLIN and 3 HORNED LARK.
At ASRI's Fisherville Brook Refuge in Exeter, 10 RING-NECKED DUCK, 4
BUFFLEHEAD, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 1 TREE SWALLOW and 2
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH on the 29th.
Nine GLOSSY IBIS were reported flying over Middletown on the 29th.
At Third Beach restoration area also in Middletown, 3 PIPING PLOVER were
reported there on the 26th.
On the 26th at the East Providence Reservoir, 1 PIED-BILLED GREBE, 14 GREAT
CORMORANT, 6 NORTHERN PINTAIL, 3 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 100 LESSER SCAUP, 63 RUDDY
DUCK, 3 AMERICAN COOT and 11 FISH CROW. At Watchemoket Cove in East
Providence, 1 BLACK-HEADED GULL on the 25th.
A BALD EAGLE was reported in Middletown on the 27th, and one was seen in
Scituate on the 25th.
Finally, a BLACK VULTURE was reported from Exeter, and another one was
reported in Carolina this week.
