Subject: [PABIRDS] Cackling Goose contines @ Green Pond, Northampton
County
From: Dave DeReamus <becard(AT)FAST.NET>
Date: 24 Oct 2004 1:36am
Hi all,
At least 2 Cackling Geese of the "Richardson's" race continued to be seen at
Green Pond on Saturday. Both of the birds that I saw were once again found
near the back edge (west side) of the pond. It took me close to an hour to
find the first bird and, soon after, the second bird appeared alongside it.
Even if you're lucky enough to pick this smaller bird out among the larger
Canadas, a scope is almost a 'must' in order to confirm its identification
(bill, head shape, etc.).
Other birds seen there included several Rusty Blackbirds and Yellow-rumped
Warblers.
Another highlight of the day came in the early afternoon. Four other
birders were present when a fair-weather whirlwind passed right alongside us
and became a small waterspout as it moved out over the pond. The surface of
the water actually raised up about 6 inches and we were lightly sprayed with
the water from it----a real 'mist'ical experience.
Good Birding,
