Subject: [PABIRDS] Late Eastern Wood-Pewee-Lehigh County
From: "Todd A. Watkins" <watkins(AT)LEHIGH.EDU>
Date: 17 Oct 2004 1:06pm
Our Emmaus, Lehigh Co., PA suburban yard was unusually active this AM.
Migration in full gear.
Had the following, all within about 30 minutes of watching out the
kitchen and back windows.
Eastern Wood-pewee (latest I ever recorded in our yard, or even around
the whole region)
Eastern Towhee (quite unusual for me to see in our boring-suburban-lawn
habitat)
both Kinglets, totaling near a dozen, the highest numbers I've recorded
in the yard
White-breasted Nuthatch (3 on a single tree, also a yard high)
14 other typical suburban yard species.
The variety was the highest number of species in a single hour I've
recorded in our small yard.
Quite a morning.

From: Kerry Grim <kagrim(AT)ENTER.NET>
Date: 17 Oct 2004 1:29pm
State Game Land 110, Berks and Schuylkill County
Time EDT: 5:30 (9:37) A.M.
Sky: cloudy (cloudy)
Temperature °F: 41 (45)
Wind MPH: SW 19–24 (SW 19–24)
Ground: wet
Migration conditions were not very good as winds channeled through
the road cut for the first mile and at food plot 18. A huge low pressure
system over the Great Lakes brought rain yesterday and overnight,
accompanied by rain and moderately strong southwest winds. This may have
caused a lack of migration as well as poor viewing conditions this morning.
Regardless the condition, a fair number of kinglets and Winter Wrens
were found. There was a good, but very wide-spread robin migration that was
still occurring as I departed the area.
The list of 21 species included—
Canada Goose (1, hear only as birds were in the clouds),
Ruffed Grouse (1),
Sharp-shinned Hawk (2),
Downy Woodpecker (1),
Blue Jay (3),
TREE SWALLOW (30, flock flew swiftly south),
Chickadee Species (11),
Tufted Titmouse (2),
White-breasted Nuthatch (1),
Winter Wren (5), [3 in Berks County, 2 in Schuylkill county]
Golden-crowned Kinglet (20),
Ruby-crowned Kinglet (28),
Hermit Thrush (1),
American Robin (355),
Yellow-rumped Warbler (4),
Eastern Towhee (8),
Song Sparrow (2),
White-throated Sparrow (80),
Dark-eyed Junco (18),
Northern Cardinal (2),
Purple Finch (1).

Temp:upper 40s-low 50s
Breezy, partly cloudy
Winds: west 15-20 mph (gusts 30 mph)
Observers: Regina Reeder, Dan Snell
The cold front today brought a LARGE number of migrating Tree Swallows.
Nearly every field around Shippensburg had dozens of this airborne species.
High gusting winds today really kept a lot of the action near the ground.
The location of the shorebird area is a corn stubble flooded field, 2.5
miles east of the SR696 and Mud Level Rd intersection.
American Golden Plover +75 (all in basic plummage, except one in
transitional plummage)

Wilson's Snipe was seen flying in from the lake around 8:00.

My dad and I found a couple of PA firsts today around Doylestown.
The goldfinches around our house brought a female PINE SISKIN.
At Peace Valley there are still 2 DUNLIN at the Chapman road bridge and
there are lots of migrating tree swallows on the lake.
Pictures of the Dunlin and Siskin are at: http://home.comcast.net/~janefh/.
