[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Hanover, York Co. From: Beth Pugliese <bdpugliese(AT)SUSCOM.NET> Date: 14 Oct 2004 11:37am Last night I had 2 Great Horned Owls calling to each other. I went out on the deck and saw the one on the end of a dead branch. As I told my husband I saw him, he flew over the yard. First time I've seen them in flight and have visibly spotted them. Usually, it's just that I hear them at night! Also had 2 Black Vultures circling over the yard last week. Birds are pretty scarce but seem to be returning. Not sure if it is the presence of the Cooper/Sharp-Shinned Hawk, or the neighbor's cat. She has at least belled him, although it is a tiny tinkle. Carolina Wren Carolina Chickadees Am. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Powdermill Banding Website Updated From: Adrienne Leppold <quasar_5(AT)LYCOS.COM> Date: 14 Oct 2004 10:05pm Dear Birders/Banders, I have just updated the website with highlights from October 5-10 at http://www.westol.com/~banding/Fall2004_100504.htm Highlights cover the three new species banded for the fall season this week, including our first Brown Creepers, Dark-eyed Junco, and Orange-crowned Warblers. Also mentioned are our totals of Black-capped Chickadees this fall, which support 2004 being an irruptive year for chickadees, as most birdwatchers and other banders in the east have already noticed. BCCH fall totals are graphed for all 43 years of banding here at Powdermill, showing trends that resulted in at least one in every three years reflecting an irruptive movement of the species (>150 banded during the season). Until next time, happy birding/banding, Adrienne Leppold Bander/Research Assistant Powdermill Nature Reserve/ Carnegie Museum of Natural History 1847 Route 381 Rector, PA 15677 (724) 593-7521 http://www.westol.com/~banding -- _______________________________________________ Find what you are looking for with the Lycos Yellow Pages http://r.lycos.com/r/yp_emailfooter/http://yellowpages.lycos.com/default.asp?SRC=lycos10
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Early Rough Legged Hawk - York County/Spring Grove Area From: Phil Keener <pittche74(AT)YAHOO.COM> Date: 14 Oct 2004 10:26pm At around 1:00 today, I was fortunate to see a light phased rough legged. It was along Roth's Church Road(near York Airport) ~ 1/2 mile south of Rt 30 in an essentially bare field . Bird was ground perched initially, took a short flight and ground perched again and then finally took a slightly longer flight to a narrow tree line and perched in a small tree ~ 10 feet off the ground. The bird appeared mildly interested in two turkey vultures working on a roadkill opossum. The bird was not there later in the afternoon. This is the closest view(during initial ground perch) I have had of a rough legged and it really brought home how heavily feathered the tarsi of this species can be. It was very noticable. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Bushy Run Battlefield, Westmoreland Co. From: "Mark A. McConaughy" <TimeTraveler(AT)MSN.COM> Date: 14 Oct 2004 10:35pm Birds that were visiting Bushy Run Battlefield Historic Site today, 14 October 2004. Black-capped Chickadees (now a nice mix of both Carolinas and Black-caps at my feeders) Red-breasted Nuthatch (at my feeders - first of the fall) Winter Wren (along Edge Hill Trail on east side of Flour-sack hill). White-throated Sparrows Bushy Run Battlefield is located about 2 miles east of Harrison City along PA Route 993. I won't be in the office again until next Wednesday, so the feeders will not be filled again until then. Mark A. McConaughy
