[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]correction re Reesor sighting From: "Alexander Lang" <stan.long(AT)sympatico.ca> Date: 14 Jun 2008 9:29am Re my June 11th posting - the 5 sandpipers I listed as south-bound Least Sandpipers, were indeed, [and it took a bit of searching to find comparisons] 5 non-breeding adults - headed north no doubt - S Long _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Western Meadowlark & other birds. From: Luc Fazio <llukefazio(AT)netscape.net> Date: 14 Jun 2008 3:34pm Hi all: The voluminous clarion song of the Western Meadowlark was heard (and seen) this Saturday morning from 8:00 am to 9:30 am, on the south side of Patterson Sideroad between Brawton Drive and Westview.Crescent The bird seems to prefer sitting on top of Pine trees/saplings on a small knoll south of the fence, and on the telephone wires. Occasionally it flies in the grassy field and disappears ( presumed abode = nest !!??) Other birds of interest in the area: ? Eastern? Bluebirds ( male & female)- in backyards north side of Patterson Sideroad west of Brawton Dr.?(nesting!) ? Eastern Meadowlarks, same field ? Bobolinks ( male and female) same field ? Grasshopper Sparrows- south of fence , 30 m? west of Pine trees/sapling top of knoll, sitting on metal and wood posts ? Pileated Woodpecker, North of side of Patterson road ? Purple Finch, 2 North of side of Patterson road ? Mourning Warbler, singing near?stream, on Duffy's Lane West of Westview Creascent, 200 m south of Patterson Sideroad ? { other warblers: Ovenbird, Pine, Northern Waterthrush, Nashville, Redstart, Chestnut-sided, Yellow, Yellowthroat) ? Turkeys,? Hen with fledged chick- On Humber Station Rd. at the entrance to " garbage dump" west side of road ( South of Patterson Sideroad, further West from Duffy's Lane) ? Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, On Humber Station Rd.? ? Alder Flycatcher, On Humber Station Rd., south of Castlederg sideroad?? ? Am. Bittern,? On Humber Station Rd, south of Castlederg sideroad? ? Green Heron? On Humber Station Rd.,?south of Castlederg sideroad? ? Great-Blue Herons, at heronry ( on nests) adults and chicks,. On Humber Station Rd. , north and east of King ST. ? Plus some 30 more?common birds ?Cheers...? Luc Fazio ?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Directions from Paul Prior's report: >From downtown Toronto, head north to the end of Hwy 427, turn west on Hwy 7 to Hwy 50, then head north, through Bolton and on toward the village of Palgrave. A couple of miles past Albion Hills Conservation Area, you'll come to Patterson Sideroad, turn west onto this road and drive for perhaps 300 metres. Park alongside the meadow and hopefully the bird will be singing loudly again, in the meadow to the south of the road.? This was opposite the entrance to Brawton Drive. Luc Fazio. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Western Meadowlark NOT found Palgrave From: Mark Cranford <mark.cranford(AT)rogers.com> Date: 14 Jun 2008 6:28pm When looking for this bird timing could be important. I spent almost one hour between 3 and 4 pm along Paterson Road at the Western Meadowlark site and heard a single rattle but nothing else. I saw a single Meadowlark with a grey face and a lot of white in the tail. It might be an idea to look for this bird early or late in the day. At least I saw a Loggerhead Shrike sitting on a fence 100 m east of the road opposite Bluebird Box 10 on Wylie Road north of Kirkfield Directions from Paul Prior's Western Meadowlark report: >From downtown Toronto, head north to the end of Hwy 427, turn west on Hwy 7 to Hwy 50, then head north, through Bolton and on toward the village of Palgrave. Directions for Wylie Road from Norm Murr Wylie Road is north of Kirkfield in Victoria County and Kirkfield itself is on County Road 48 east of Highway 12 and well north of Whitby and about 130 km from Toronto. >From the centre of Kirkfield go north on County Road 6 passing under the Lift Lock on the Trent Canal and drive about 2 ½ km further north to where the road curves left or west. On this curve and on your right is McNamee Rd, turn right here onto McNamee and drive east for about 300 yards and you will be at Wylie Road. Bird box 10 is one the west side of the road a couple hundred meters past the only cottage on the west side of the road before an open wetland with a small bridge (the Sedge Wren Marsh) -- Mark Cranford Mississauga, Ont. mark.cranford at rogers dot com _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Brighton Wetland and Lagoon From: "Rod Lee" <simkev(AT)sympatico.ca> Date: 14 Jun 2008 4:28pm Hello everyone: This report comes on behalf of Keith Lee (Tiny). Many Marsh Wren, Common Yellowthroat Warbler, Redwing Blackbird, Yellow Warbler, Common Grackle, Tree Swallow, Killdeer, Moorhen (were active - also saw a couple of immature birds), Northern Oriole, Mute Swans, Trumpeter (Oscar) Swan, Dunlin, many Mallard (Drakes), Canada Geese + three families of 10, 8 and 5 goslings respectively, Blue Wing Teal (2 male), Song Sparrow, families of Mallards of various ages, we did not see the 8 cygnet family of Mute Swan because the cattails are very tall now. There was also a Hooded Merganser, Kingfisher, Great Blue Heron, Northern Flicker, Tree and Barn Swallow, and 2 Gadwall and three families of Wood Ducks. Now the very exciting news: The Osprey have at least one offspring (Tiny and I decided to call it "Catfish" as that is what the male brought in for it to eat.) Catfish appears to be quite healthy and it hungrily accepted the food offered by the female. This is Brighton Constructed Wetland's first baby Osprey. A reminder that starting next Saturday June 21, 2008 Keith Lee (Tiny) will be at the Wetland between 4:00 and 5:30 or 6:00pm. Please do not enter the Wetland without the permission of the Brighton Public Works Department through Keith Lee. Maureen Campeau Directions: The Constructed Wetland is located at the SE corner of Brighton. From Hwy 401, take the Brighton exit 509 (Hwy. 30) and follow it south into town. Go south through the two traffic lights, over the railway tracks and follow the main road, now called Prince Edward Street, south. About 1 km south of the tracks, the main road begins to swing to the left and becomes Cty. Rd. 64. As this long turn ends the Constructed Wetlands appear on the right side. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Recent White-winged Dove sighting??? From: Andrew Keaveney <uofgtwitcher(AT)msn.com> Date: 14 Jun 2008 8:17pm Hello Ontbirders. It has come to my attention that the white-winged dove formerly reported in Prince Edward County may still be present in the area. I am either not seeing the report of it on ontbirds or perhaps there hasn't been one? Could anyone please confirm/deny these 'allegations' ??? Thanks so much folks, Andrew Keaveney _________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
