Subject: [Ontbirds]Brighton Wetland and Lagoon
From: "Rod Lee" <simkev(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 19 May 2008 5:38am
Greetings on this rather cool morning: The Brighton Constructed Wetland was
a very good place for shore birds yesterday. Rod and I relieved Doug Mcrae
at 11:00am. Doug reported a White-rumped Sandpiper, 15 Dunlin, 3
Short-billed Dowitcher, 2 Semi-palmated Plover, many Least Sandpiper and 8
Lesser Yellowlegs as well as 1 Solitary Sandpiper. Doug had lost sight of
the Solitary but Fred Helleiner quickly relocated this beautiful sandpiper
as Doug was leaving. Thanks Fred, as we were able to point out its location
to the seven people who stopped at the Wetland. Rod and I were able to add
1 Greater Yellowlegs to the list of shorebirds. Seven of us watched as one
Osprey came to the nest with a fish in talon. The nesting Osprey took the
fish and left the nest while its mate took its place on the nest. A
Black-billed Cuckoo could also be heard calling. The Trumpeter Swan and 8
Mutes continue to stay in the Wetland. There were also a pair of Gadwall,
many Mallard - Drake and 1 female and a Blue-winged Teal. Other birds of
interest: Common Yellowthroated Warbler, Yellow Warbler and the first Purple
Martins. Also the Moorhen were very vocal and two could be seen for a very
few minutes in different locations. The Marsh Wrens were also very vocal
and a 2 were actually seen. All-in-all a very pleasant couple of hours at
Brighton's Constructed Wetland.
Doug Mcrae will advise if the Wetland will be open this coming Friday May
23, 2008.
Kindest regards
Maureen and Rod
Directions: The Constructed Wetland is located at the SE corner of
Brighton. From Hwy 401, take the Brighton exit (Hwy. 30)and follow
it south into town. Go south through the two traffic lights, over
the railway tracks and follow the main road, now called Prince Edward
Street, south. About 1 km south of the tracks, the main road begins
to swing to the left and becomes Cty. Rd. 64. As this long turn
ends, the constructed wetlands appear on the right side.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Prothonotary Warbler - West Deane Park, Etobicoke
- YES
From: "D Pryor" <stg1(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 19 May 2008 6:33am
The male prothonotary warbler was confirmed this morning at 9:00 am and
observed for about 15 minutes feeding in some small trees between 10-20 feet
off the ground from a distance of about 15 feet. The bird was seen by myself
and another birder on the west side of Mimico Creek (across the bridge at
the Martingrove Parking lot) and about 300 yards north on the path that runs
parallel and tight to the creek. It was travelling with some yellow-rumped
and bay-breasted warblers.
Neither the Kentucky warbler or the Summer Tanager were relocated.
The West Deane/Ravenscrest/Hampshire Heights/Echo Valley park system
comprises the Mimico Creek Ravine and runs between Kipling/Burnhamthorpe
streets in the south through to Eglinton Avenue & Hwy. 427 in the north.
Directions from downtown Toronto: Gardiner Expressway West, north on Hwy
427, Rathburn Road offramp EAST (not west per my earlier directions) to
Martingrove Road, left (north) on Martingrove to West Dean Park parking lot
on left (west) side of road.

Subject: [Ontbirds] 18 WARBLER SPECIES on a cold morning at
Thickson's Woods in sw Whitby--May 19
From: "Doug Lockrey" <lockrey33(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 19 May 2008 12:16pm
The cold damp air kept the songbirds in Thickson's low in the trees--great for
the very many birders in the morning of May 19 at Thickson's Woods. The greatest
concentration was near the cedar hedge at the west end of the bird-feeder
trail, just inside the entry gate, as well as the car-park roadside.
I believe a RED-THROATED LOON was seen on the lake below the woods.
I do not know whether the Black-billed Cuckoo (seen May 18) was picked up.
Among the songbirds were:
Vireos--PHILADELPHIA, Blue-headed, Red-eyed;
Scarlet Tanager-2 m, 1 f
House Wren
Baltimore Oriole(several)
ORCHARD ORIOLE
INDIGO BUNTING
Rose-breasted Grosbeak
LINCOLN'S SPARROW
White-crowned Sparrow
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Warblers-TENNESSEE, Nashville, N.Parula (f), Yellow, Chestnut-sided (many-m &
f), Magnolia (many), CAPE MAY, Black-throated Blue (many), Yellow-rumped (many),
Black-throated Green, BLACKBURNIAN (several), Pine, BAY-BREASTED (2),
Black-and-white, Am.Redstart (several), Ovenbird, C.Yellowthroat (1m, 1f),
WILSON'S.
I do hope someone will report to ONTBIRDS from Thickson's between May 21 and 26
incl.--I would love to see what I am missing while up on the Bruce orchidizing
and, perhaps a little birding!!
Access the 401 onto Thickson Rd. in sw Whitby--south toward the lake, turning
east at the car-park road that parallels the north fringe of the pine woods.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Rondeau - AW Pelican, 2 Cerulean, Worm-eating,
Proth
From: Steve LaForest <stevelaforest(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 19 May 2008 10:02am
Rondeau Bird Report – Monday May 19, 2008
Good morning birders.
Our warbler total for this morning was 22 species, including Cerulean,
Worm-eating and Prothonotary. There were 2 Ceruleans – a male at Bennett Road
and a female at the Maintenance Loop. Both of these birds were in the same area
yesterday. The Worm-eating was still in its usual haunt, on Spicebush, where
it has been lurking quietly since May 10. Other warblers included a Blue-winged
at the Pony Barn, an Orange-crowned on Harrison Trail, and a Blackpoll at South
Point Trail. The best trails today were South Point and the Pony Barn.
Nonpasserines were noteworthy. In the marsh, observers saw an impressive 5
American White Pelicans yesterday. On the beach at South Point, there were both
Dunlin and Ruddy Turnstones today.
Near the park, good birds were reported from Bates Pond, just outside the main
gate. Five Semipalmated Plovers were there this morning, along with a Sandhill
Crane. A female Red-necked Phalarope was found there yesterday at ~3 pm. Also
present yesterday were ~50 Dunlin, 4 Short-billed Dowitcher, a Least Sandpiper
and a Sora in full view. While checking unsuccessfully for the phalarope in the
late afternoon, I saw a Peregrine Falcon swoop through. It seems that this
bird was present in the park area for most of the day yesterday.
My last hike of the season will be at 1:00 pm today. I would like to thank the
Friends of Rondeau for this wonderful opportunity for birding at one of
Ontario’s best hotspots. The Friends and the park staff have all been very
hospitable to Carolyn and I during our visit. A final thanks to the park
birders for all of their support, for adding records to the Bird Sightings Book
and the Sightings Boards.
See you in May 2009!
Good birding.

Friends of Rondeau Bird Guide
c/o Rondeau Visitor Centre (519) 674-1768
Directions:
To reach Rondeau PP, take exit 101 from Highway 401 and drive South 16 km on
Chatham Kent Road 15. Follow the signs to the park. The Bird Sightings Book,
Bird Sightings Board and other relevant information are located at the Visitor
Centre (open 7 am to 5 p m from May 3 - 19). To reach the Centre from the park
gate, travel 6 km South on Rondeau Road to Gardiner Ave. and follow it around
the bend to the parking lot.
For Bates Pond at Kent Bridge Road and Rondeau Road - from the park gate, drive
~1 km north to Kent Bridge Road. The pond is on the northeast corner of this
intersection. Please take care to park safely, as this is a busy road with very
narrow shoulders.
We have received reports that the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons are once more
inaccessible, as of Sunday May 18. Apparently, the gate is now locked with a
padlock, so that even birders with a permit and the correct combination for the
combination lock cannot get in.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Monday update on Blenheim Lagoons
From: "Irene Woods" <irewoods(AT)ciaccess.com>
Date: 19 May 2008 6:48pm
Ontbirders :
Apologies to the 2 gentlemen who were unable to access the lagoons today.
I went immediately to the lagoons and was easily able to unlock the gate.
I suspect the lock didn't dare give an old schoolmarm any trouble !
We just put in the new lock this past Friday.
Or perhaps the problem was that in an earlier posting, I neglected to stress
that we ONLY have entry through the small gate--by combination lock.
All large gates have padlocks requiring keys, for maintenance personnel.
Wilson's Phalaropes were still there. Thank you to the persons noting that
the birds were using a small field puddle near the building cells.
