From: Steve LaForest <stevelaforest(AT)hotmail.com>

Rondeau Bird Report – Monday May 5, 2008 Greetings Ontbirders, The
Scissor-tailed Flycatcher adult male discovered in the park at 11:15 am was
present until shortly after 1:30 pm. It then flew north out of the park. It was
next found in a tree in a field about 1 km to the north of the park gate. The
field is at the northeast corner of Wildwood Road (the continuation of Rondeau
Road outside the park) and Kent Bridge Road. Birders passed along word that it
had been seen up to about 4 pm at that location. I have received no further
information as of sunset on Monday. Other sightings of note: Warblers: 20
species (including Blackpoll seen just outside the park). The ‘best’ birds were
Cerulean, Kentucky, Hooded, Blue-winged, and Orange-crowned, as well as the
Prothonotary seen daily at the Pony Barn. Black-throated Blue was a new arrival.
Other Passerines: The Harris’s Sparrow is reliable, even singing at times, at
the Visitor Centre, along with Lincoln’s Sparrow and an excellent variety of
feeder birds. White-eyed Vireo and Orchard Oriole were seen on South Point
Trail. Nearby locations outside the park have also yielded good results, with a
Cattle Egret seen yesterday at the Blenheim Lagoons. The "Scissor-tailed" site
had Sora, Great Egret, Pileated Woodpecker, 2 Solitary Sandpipers and Northern
Shovelers. Good birding. Steve LaForestFriends of Rondeau Bird Guidec/o Rondeau
Visitor Centre (519) 674-1768 I will lead a guided bird hike twice daily May 3
to 19 (fee $5), as follows: Monday, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday 7:30 am & 1
pm; Tuesday & Thursday 7:30 am & 7 pm.; Friday 7:30 am. All of the 7:30 am and 1
pm hikes listed above will meet at the Visitor Centre. The 7 pm hikes will meet
at the entrance to the Marsh Trail. A second hike on Friday at 1 pm will meet
at the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons. The Friends of Rondeau will provide a birders'
brunch for a small donation (coffee, tea, bagels, soups & treats) daily from 7 -
11 am. There will also be a special program, on Saturday May 10 at 7 pm - an
evening presentation about the spring migration at Rondeau:An Evening in the
Forest with LaForest (contact Visitor Centre re tickets) Directions: Take exit
101 from Highway 401 and drive South 16 km on Chatham Kent Road 15. Follow the
signs to the park. For the field where the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher was last
seen, stop where Kent Bridge Road ends at Wildwood Road (where you would have to
turn right to continue to Rondeau Provincial Park). The field is northeast of
this intersection. Please note that Kent Bridge Road can be busy here, and
drivers are advised to find a safe place to park nearby. The Bird Sightings
Book, Bird Sightings Board and other relevant information are located at the
Visitor Centre (open 7 am to 5 pm from May 3 - 19). To reach the Centre from the
park gate, travel 6 km South on Rondeau Road to Gardiner Ave. and follow it
around the bend to the parking lot

Subject: [Ontbirds]yellow warbler, rusty cap
From: Skip Shand/GL/York/CA <sshand(AT)glendon.yorku.ca>
Date: 6 May 2008 9:00am
Hello folks.
This morning I had a very brief backyard visit from a male yellow warbler
with a distinct rusty tinge to its crown. This cap was not sharply defined
at the margins, but the coloration was very clear, and it was a feature I
haven't been aware of before. Have I just been missing something common?
My guidebooks do tell me about the Mangrove variant that occurs in Florida
and occasionally in Texas, but I don't have an in-depth warbler book near
at hand. I'd be interested to hear, off-list, if anyone would like to
enlighten me about this sighting.
The bird was very active, and moved on quickly. The sighting was near
Bathurst and Eglinton, in Toronto.
Cheers,
Skip Shand

Subject: [Ontbirds] Marbled Godwit and Lark Sparrow - Sault Ste.
Marie / Stokely
From: "McIlwrick, Ken" <kmcilwri(AT)NRCan.gc.ca>
Date: 6 May 2008 11:08am
Hi Folks,
This morning (May 6, 2008) between 6:30-7:00 am I observed and photographed a
Marbled Godwit feeding in a back-water bay of the St. Mary's River just beside
Belleview Park, in Sault Ste. Marie, ON.
This bird had a nice long black-tipped orange upturned bill, well defined thin
dark lores with a buffy patch just above and very dark legs. Its plumage has a
buffy base and appears to be in a post winter /pre summer state (belly and lower
flanks not yet fully streaked/mottled).
It was last reported at 10:30am.
Directions to this Bird: Belleview Park is located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
along the St. Mary's River, south of Queen Street and between Shore Drive and
Lake Street. Head south on Lake Street towards the River and park near the
sailing club. The bird is in the bay just north of the sailing club and Parks
Dept. soil compound.
In Addition:
Yesterday (May 5, 2008) while doing field work I observed and photographed a
Lark Sparrow feeding in a grassy/gravel opening in a Forested area just north of
Sault Ste. Marie (Stokely Cross Country Ski Resort). It was last seen around
2:30 pm (May 5th).
Directions to this Bird: Stokely Cross Country Ski Resort is located about 35min
north of Sault Ste. Marie, east of Hwy 17, just off of Buttermilk Ski Hill Road
(OLD Highway 17). This area is not open to the public at this time of year and
a key and special permission is needed to enter the property. The location of
the bird is "off-the beaten-path" and therefore GPS coordinates where taken.

THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 5:30 pm, MONDAY MAY 5, 2008
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
More migrants continue to arrive, with a nice influx of songbirds this past
week. Twelve species of warblers have now been reported in the
Ottawa-Gatineau area, with Orange-crowned, Cape May, Black-throated
Blue, Black-throated Green and Mourning all new on the
weekend. The first reports of Great Crested Flycatcher, Rose-breasted
Grosbeak and Baltimore Oriole came in on May 3rd. Large mixed flocks
of Purple Martins, Tree, Northern Rough-winged, Bank and Barn Swallows
have been reported almost daily since April 29th in a "feeding frenzy"
along the Ottawa River in the Britannia area, and White-crowned
Sparrows have been reported from various locations since the 29th.
Aside from the passerine migration.....
Recent visits to the eastern sewage lagoons at Casselman, Embrun and
St. Albert as well as other wet areas around our region revealed a fairly
good variety of common dabbling and diving ducks, including 5 REDHEAD
at Embrun. A male REDHEAD was also seen on the Ottawa
River east of the Britannia filtration plant from the 30th to the 2nd, and
single male Red-breasted Mergansers were at Remic rapids on the 30th,
and in the small pond on the west side of Moodie Dr. at Cambrian Rd. on
the 2nd. A winter-plumaged Red-throated Loon was on the large quarry
pond along Moodie Dr. on the 29th, 2 adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls
were nearby at the Trail Rd. landfill the same day and one was seen in
the fields near the landfill on the 2nd.
A Great Egret was seen in the town of Carp on the morning of the 4th, in
a flooded field along the Carp River off Donald B. Munro Rd. The first
local report of a Green Heron came from Britannia the same day, and
both Virginia Rail and Sora were first reported back on the 27th. Ten of
the expected species of shorebirds have now been reported from our
area, with new arrivals being Solitary Sandpiper in a couple of different
locations on the 2nd and 4th, and Wilson's Phalaropes at both the
Embrun and St. Albert lagoons on the 2nd. A surprise was a rare (for
Ottawa) CASPIAN TERN, seen flying south down the Rideau Canal near
Dow's Lake at around noon on the 5th.
A couple of Snow Geese and a Rough-legged Hawk were still in the
Luskville area on the morning of the 4th, small numbers of RUSTY
BLACKBIRDS were still moving through as of the 3rd, and a flock of 25
Evening Grosbeaks was still present on Bradley Rd. at the base of the
Gatineau hills on the 4th. Also of interest from the Quebec side were 2
Northern Mockingbirds at Aylmer and Bristol Rds. back on April 28th.
Thank you - Good Birding!

Rondeau Bird Report – Tuesday May 6, 2008
Hello Ontario Birders.
There have been no additional reports of the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher found
yesterday in the park, and later seen nearby, despite considerable searching by
many observers. I would appreciate receiving any additional information about
this bird.
The highlight for today was a Laughing Gull in breeding plumage seen and
photographed at the dock by Alf Rider at about 8 am. Also present in the marsh
were Green Herons and good numbers of Forster's Terns.
There was a major influx of warblers, with a total of 23 species reported,
including single Worm-eating and Hooded, as well as multiple observations of
Golden-winged, Blue-winged, Orange-crowned, and Northern Parula. Newly arrived
'parulines' included Tennessee and Canada.
Among the other songbirds, the Harris’s Sparrow continues to delight birders at
the Visitor Centre, along with a good range of feeder birds. New migrants in the
park included Veery, Tufted Titmouse and Gray-cheeked Thrush.
Rather late sightings included a Glaucous Gull (second year), Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker, Hermit Thrush and many Yellow-rumped Warblers.
Good birding.

Directions:-
TORONTO ISLANDS ( Wards Island to Hanlans Point - without side trips is 5 km ) -
Now on the Spring Schedule.
To get to the Toronto Islands from Queen and Yonge Streets on the TTC. If your
on the subway southbound stay on it and get off at Union Station, walk south
about 1 km to the ferry docks at the foot of Bay Street at Queens Quay and you
are there. If in an auto on the Gardener Expressway or on Lakeshore Blvd, then
exit at Bay Street and drive south to Queens Quay, there are lots of parking
lots nearby (fee).
There is a fee for using the island ferries ( $6.50 adult / $4.00 for seniors
and students ( all fares are return ) ) and to find out the sailing times you
can phone (416) 392-8193. There are washrooms on the islands as well as the city
side at the ferry docks and you can pick up a schedule at the docks or check on
line.
The 1st boat to Wards Island (my preferred starting point) is 6:35 am and the
2nd is 7:00 am Monday to Friday.
The 1st is at 6:35 am and the 2nd boat is at 7:15 am on Saturday, Sunday and
Holidays.
The 1st boat to Hanlans Point is 8:00 am and the 2nd boat is at 8:30 am Monday
to Friday.
The 1st is at 8:15 am and the 2nd boat is at 9:15 am on Saturday, Sunday and
Holidays.
If arriving in early am ( before 7:30 ) you must obtain your ticket from a
machine just inside the gate so be sure to have $1.00 and $2.00 and / or 25 cent
coins before you arrive at the docks as there is no place to get change and the
machine does not make change. (There is a change machine (up to a $10 bill)
there if you want to chance it).
There are coffee shops across from the ferry docks in the building on the
northwest corner and they are open early. Food and beverages on The Islands when
open are very expensive i.e. soft drinks $3.00. If you are birding from Wards
the soft drink machine beside the fire station sells juice, iced tea, etc. for
$1.00.and $1.25.
For a detailed ferry schedule check the following web site.
http://www.toronto.ca/parks/island/springschedule.htm
PS - There is a map of the Islands at each of the Island side ferry docks and
the City side.
- The drinking fountains have been turned and some of the toilets are open now.

Two Yellow Rails were calling in the Sedge Pond on Wylie Rd at Carden this
morning between 6am and 7am. One was about a third of the way between the
bridge and the north edge of the marsh, and the other was close to the north
end. The Sedge Wren was at the north end.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Cattle Egrets near Cattle!
From: "Jeff Larson" <jefflars(AT)mnsi.net>
Date: 6 May 2008 10:16pm
Late this afternoon (5:55 pm), I spotted two Cattle Egrets in a field shadowing
some cattle in a field near Holiday Beach Conervation Area. They appeared to be
catching insects stirred up by the cattle which were only two meters away.
Directions: 100 m west of Ure's Kitchen on County Road 20. The birds were in
the pasture on the south side of the road. Ure's Kitchen is at the intersection
of County Road 50 and County Road 20 about 10 km south of Amherstburg.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Mottled Duck, photos...
From: "Steve Pike" <stevepike.com(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 6 May 2008 7:35pm
At 8:30pm tonight the Mottled Duck returned briefly to the Shorebird cell at
Hillman Marsh.
Dean Ware and I walked back around the long way and carefully peeked over
the dyke without flushing the bird (birds) and were able to get a couple of
good images in flight and sitting that I'll post tomorrow.
The bird is still returning I think almost every day so far and was seen
early in the AM (from around 6:15-7:30 I heard today) and in the late PM,
anywhere from 7:45-8:45pm.
It usually flies in from the South-West and lands in the SW corner of the
Shorebird cell accompanied with the hybrid Black X Wood Duck and drake
Mallard.
We heard it calling as well before it flew of with his hybrid friend that
Dean believes is going to roost in the Marsh.
Birding was great at Pelee today, a big change from the last few days...2 X
male Pro Warbler's, Cerulean, Kentucky, Louisiana Waterthrush including 7
different male Golden-winged I had heard about.
Good birding!
Steve Pike
