[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Mottled Duck - Hillman Marsh From: "Todd Pepper" <tandjpepper(AT)cogeco.ca> Date: 2 May 2008 7:43am The Mottled Duck reported by Dean Ware the evening of May 1, 2008 at the Hillman Marsh shorebird and waterfowl habitat was still present at 6:40 a.m. this morning, May 2nd. The Mottled Duck was with two pair of American Black Duck on the south side of the impoundment near the bench. The Mottled Duck was observed for approx. 20 minutes. The bright yellow bill and lighter neck and head clearly distinguished it from the adjacent Black Ducks. Just as I went to digiscope it the main flock of Mallards lifted off and headed east towards Hillman Marsh and then the Black Ducks, Mottled Duck and Shovelers were quick to follow. Again the Mottled Duck stood out from the adjacent Black Ducks by its lighter body colour. Probably best to try for this bird again in the evening. Also present at Hillman this a.m. was a Stilt Sandpiper at the south-west corner and both Yellowlegs in the water nearest the pump station. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Gray-cheeked Thrush and Hooded Warbler, Ojibway Park From: David McNorton <mcnorton(AT)iprimus.ca> Date: 2 May 2008 10:48am I birded Ojibway Park in Windsor this morning, May 2, 2008. On one of the wet trails towards the west side of the park, a Hooded Warbler was singing repeatedly. It stopped singing at exactly 8:30, as if its shift had ended for the day. About half an hour later, on the east side paved trail, I was surprised by a Gray-cheeked Thrush. It was an excellent view - this bird had no rufous on its tail at all, and a uniformly gray back and head. It didn't have enough warmth in its colour to suggest a Bicknell's Thrush. It's my earliest record ever for a Gray-cheek. Other firsts of the spring for me today were Wood Thrush and Magnolia Warbler. Ojibway Park is best accessed from Matchette Road in Windsor. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. I shall endeavour to list some of the highlights over the past few days: Cooper's Hawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Belted Kingfisher, Woodpeckers--Downy, Hairy, N.Flicker; E. Wood Pewee, E.Phoebe, Blue-headed Vireo, House Wren, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, VEERY, Hermit Thrush, Gray Catbird, Brown Thrasher, Warblers--Nashville, Black-throated Blue, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Green, Blackburnian, Palm, Pine, Black-and-White, Ovenbird, perhaps Wilson's; E.Towhee, Sparrows--Chipping Sparrow, Savannah, Song, LINCOLN'S, White-throated; Dark-eyed Junco, BALTIMORE ORIOLE. The Daphne shrub is in full bloom. Vegetation is nearly 2 weeks behind last year. Over the past 2 weeks Betty Pegg has had regular visits by at least 5 male and 2 female PURPLE FINCHES to her behind-the-house feeders. She is happy to have birder visitors--perhaps phone in advance--I can give you her phone no. Her house is the first house driveway on the south side off Concession 7 to the immediate west of Westney Rd. Thickson's Woods--exit the 401 on Thickson Rd. in Whitby---go south toward the lake, turning east as you approach the big White Pine woodlot on the east side. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]Kingston area birds to May 2, 2008 From: "Peter and Jane Good" <goodcompany(AT)sympatico.ca> Date: 2 May 2008 5:37pm There has been a whole slew of new migrants this week, lots of interesting sightings and at least two that were totally unexpected. There was an Am. Bittern at the Queen's University Biological Station(QUBS) on the 25th and a Green Heron at Bedford Mills the next day. Virginia Rails were reported from Lost Lake on the 26th and Little Cat on the 29th and there were 2 Common Moorhens near Yarker last Sunday. Thirty Horned and 5 Red-necked Grebes were off Amherst Island a week ago and what was really unusual were 8 more Red-necked on Lake Opinicon yesterday. (These are very rarely reported away from Lake Ontario.) A trip to Amherst last Friday produced several species of shorebird including 5 Upland and 2 Spotted Sandpipers, 1 Greater and 9 Lesser Yellowlegs, a Dunlin and a Wilson's Phalarope. Also on Amherst, a single Long-eared Owl and 2 Rough-legged Hawks were the raptor highlights. So far only Blue-headed and Warbling Vireos have been seen; the former on Amherst on the 25th and at Lemoine Pt. on the 26th, and the latter at the QUBS on the 25th and on the Opinicon Road on the 27th. Ten species of warbler were noted this week: 2 Yellow-rumped on Amherst last Friday, 4 Yellow at Lemoine Pt., 1 Pine on the Canoe Lake Road, 3 N. Waterthrush at Lost Lake and a Palm on the Opinicon Rd. on Saturday, a Louisiana Waterthush and a Nashville on the Canoe Lake Road and 2 Black-and-white and 2 more N. Waterthrush on the Opinicon Rd. on Sunday, and a Black-throated Green at Lansdowne and a Black-throated Blue at Lemoine Pt. on Wednesday. There were 20+ Bank Swallows at a sand pit near Yarker on Sunday and 4 Purple Martins at Lemoine Pt. on Wednesday. The first Whip-poor-will of the season was at Bedford Mills and the first Ruby-throated Hummingbird was on Amherst, both seen on the 27th. Flycatchers arrived this week; 2 E. Kingbirds on the Opinicon Rd. last Sunday, a Great-crested at Lansdowne on Wednesday and a Least at Chaffey's Lock yesterday. The trip up the Opinicon Rd. last Sunday also had 2 Winter Wrens, a House Wren and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. Five Evening Grosbeaks passed through Lemoine Pt. on Saturday and a singleton visited a feeder near Glenburnie from Sunday until Wednesday. A Rose-breasted Grosbeak was at Lansdowne and a White-crowned Sparrow picked at freshly planted grass seed near Camden East on Wednesday. The last? Common Redpoll was at Elginburg on Saturday. The most surprising sighting was another Great Gray Owl, the third locally since mid March, found on the QUBS property last Saturday. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] Hamilton Naturalists Club Birding Report - Friday, May 2nd, 2008 From: "Cheryl Edgecombe" <cheryle29(AT)cogeco.ca> Date: 2 May 2008 7:39pm On Friday, May 2nd, 2008, this is the HNC Birding Report: WHITE-EYED VIREO WORM-EATING WARBLER Horned Grebe Red-necked Grebe American Bittern Green Heron Virginia Rail Sora Sandhill Crane Greater Yellowlegs Common Tern Forster's Tern Chimney Swift Least Flycatcher Great Crested Flycatcher Blue-headed Vireo Warbling Vireo Purple Martin Tree Swallow Northern Rough-wined Swallow Bank Swallow Cliff Swallow Barn Swallow House Wren Ruby-crowned Kinglet Blue-gray Gnatcatcher Veery Swainson's Thrush Hermit Thrush Wood Thrush Gray Catbird Brown Thrasher Nashville Warbler Magnolia Warbler Yellow Warbler Black-throated Blue Warbler Yellow-rumped Warbler Black-throated Green Warbler Blackburnian Warbler Pine Warbler Palm Warbler Black-and-White Warbler Ovenbird Northern Waterthrush American Tree Sparrow Chipping Sparrow Swamp Sparrow White-throated Sparrow White-crowned Sparrow Rose-breasted Grosbeak Indigo Bunting Rusty Blackbird Baltimore Oriole A very busy week here in Hamilton with the arrival of many migrants and some goodies too. This weeks rarities include WHITE-EYED VIREO and WORM-EATING WARBLER both hanging around together at Paletta/Shoreacres Park in Burlington last seen last evening in the northeast corner of the park. Patience is necessary as these two birds are skulkers and the Worm-eating Warbler is especially elusive with its colour. Other birds seen here in the week include Brown Thrasher, Hermit Thrush, Warbling Vireo, Yellow, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Green, Pine and Palm Warbler and Baltimore Oriole. Tree, Barn, Northern Rough-winged Bank and Cliff Swallow along with Purple Martin were seen over the park and along the lakeshore feasting on the abundance of gnats down on the water. Down the road at Shell Park/Bronte Woods in Oakville, Magnolia, Black-throated Blue, Blackburnian and Black-throated Green Warbler were seen at various times this week. Another spot reporting WORM-EATING WARBLER is Rattray Marsh where two were seen scrounging around in the foliage about 100 yds. east of the intersection of the main marsh walkway and trail down the hill from the parking area at the south of Bexhill. Other birds seen here in the week include Sora, Common Terns, five species of Swallows and Purple Martin, Least Flycatcher, Nashville, Yellow-rumped, Pine, Palm, Black & White, Magnolia, Black-throated Green Warbler and Northern Waterthrush. Another hotspot today was the VanWagners Ponds. On the rail trail between the ponds, Brown Thrasher, Hermit Thrush, Veery, Gray Catbird, Warbling Vireo, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Black-throated Blue, Nashville, Black and White, Palm, Yellow and Yellow-rumped Warbler, Northern Waterthrush, Ovenbird, Swamp, White-throated and White-crowned Sparrow and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Quite a mix of birds and an indication that things have come in with this front. A walk behind Tansley Woods Community Centre located on Upper Middle just east of Walker's Line yielded a similar mix of birds today with Wood Thrush, House Wren, Blue-headed Vireo, Magnolia Warbler, Chipping Sparrow and Rusty Blackbird being added to the list above. The Northshore Trails of the Royal Botanical Gardens have been busy as well with Warbling Vireo, Blue Gray Gnatcatcher and a few Least Flycatchers, Black-throated Green, Palm, Yellow and Yellow-rumped Warblers and Indigo Buntings. Today a Green Heron was flushed from the shore. Lots to report in the odds and sods. The Dundas Marsh is a good place to go for listening to Soras and Virginia Rails. A Sandhill Crane was seen over Cootes Paradise this week. An American Bittern was heard calling on 8th Concession West east of Westover Road near the Antrim Glen housing development. Rose-breasted Grosbeaks were reported at a feeder in Dundas as early as last weekend. Red-necked Grebes are nesting down at Bronte Harbour once again. Green Heron and Greater Yellowlegs were seen at the Grimsby Sewage Lagoons and a Forster's Tern was seen off Fifty Point. Green Herons were also reported from the Petro Canada Park in Oakville which borders Bronte Creek. A Great Crested Flycatcher was seen at Tuck Creek just north of Spruce yesterday. Out in the Brantford area, Indigo Bunting (an early record of April 22nd), Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Chimney Swift and Sandhill Cranes were among the goodies seen here. That's the news this week, keep reporting your sightings! I love MAY! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds]May2 - Little Blue Heron,Port Rowan; Worm-eating Warbler Paletta Park; Ruff, Long-billed Dowitcher Minesing. From: "M. Bain" <mjcbain(AT)sympatico.ca> Date: 2 May 2008 10:45pm With the forecast for heavy rain all day east of Toronto, Richard Pope and I drove west, first to Long Point for excellent looks at the "calico" Little Blue Heron at the BSC Headquarters in Port Rowan. Then we visited Old Cut where there had been a major fall-out of migrants earlier in the morning. The woods around the banding station were still quite busy, especially with White-throated Sparrows and Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Species seen included Blue-headed Vireos, Veerys and Hermit Thrushes, Gray Catbirds, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, and at least 10 species of common warblers, but not the male Yellow-headed Blackbird, which apparently is an "afternoon" visitor to the feeders there. A Hooded and a Blue-winged Warbler and a Wood Thrush had been banded earlier in the day. Six Sandhill Cranes, one pair displaying, were visible from the lookout at Big Creek marsh and the cattails were full of singing Common Yellowthroats. We then drove back to Paletta Park in Burlington and, amazingly, almost immediately found the Worm-eating Warbler at about 1.30pm, exactly where it was last reported yesterday evening - in the northeast corner of the park, in the slough across the bridge east of the parking lot, close to the north side of the path. It was a very richly coloured individual, giving us wonderful views for several minutes as it foraged quietly in low vegetation. Then we went north to McKinnon Road near Angus and found the Ruff in the flooded field just south of the Hydro right-of way. It's head and neck are now completely black and there is a suggestion of a ruff forming at the base of its neck. In the wet fields along both sides of the road were over 500 Greater and Lesser yellowlegs constantly flying to and fro, several snipe, Dunlin, and at least 1 Pectoral. On the west side, opposite #9329, was a breeding-plumaged Long-billed Dowitcher feeding very close to the road, showing diagnostic bright white scapular tips, and fine white fringes to the thin black scallops on its cinnamon underparts. It gave typical "keek" call-notes as it flew short distances - and had a very long bill, making it most likely a female bird. Directions (copied from previous posts) BSC Headquarters are at the western end of Port Rowan, along Front Street. The pond is visible from the observation deck on the south-west corner. To reach Port Rowan, take highway 59 south and turn east on Front Street. To reach Old Cut, return to Hwy.59 and go south - Old Cut Blvd. runs east, just befor the entrance to Long Point P.P. >From QEW take Appleby or Walkers Line south down to the Lakeshore. Paletta/Shoreacres is east of Walkers Line and west of Appleby Line on the south side of Lakeshore Road in Burlington. Take County Rd. 90 from Barrie west to Angus. McKinnon Road is just east of Angus to the north.
