Subject: Mississippi Kite Photos
From: Scott Spangenberg <scottspangenberg(AT)mindspring.com>
Date: 17 Jun 2008 7:59am
Two weeks ago, I returned from South Carolina on a trip where one of
my goals was to obtain better photos of Mississippi Kites. Pretty
amusing that I should have better results here at home. The light
has been really challenging, but here are some more photos of the kites.

Subject: Update: Norton Tours of Jonesport, ME
From: "David Larson" <dlarson(AT)massaudubon.org>
Date: 17 Jun 2008 12:09pm
I just got a message from Holly Davis at Norton Tours. They have decided
to carry on with trips to Machias Seal Island this summer. They will
have limited slots in July and will be back with the usual schedule in
August.
Norton Tours has 3 licensed captains who will be assisting Whitney this
summer to carry out trips and carry on the Norton family tradition. So
please factor Norton Tours and The Chief into your summer plans.

Subject: Mississippi Kites - YES
From: "David J. Blezard" <djb1(AT)cisunix.unh.edu>
Date: 17 Jun 2008 1:25pm
I just got back from a lunch-break jaunt to Newmarket (12:35 - 1:05
PM).
The female Mississippi Kite was sitting on the next. The large number
of scopes and birders made locating the spot on Rt. 152 rather easy!
After about 10 minutes, the male started coming by. He flew over the
area in several circling slow passes. We had some excellent views.
A Broad-winged Hawk also made a low pass almost directly overhead just
before I left.

Subject: 5 Baby Green Herons!
From: "Muffie" <MH(AT)Hendricks.mv.com>
Date: 17 Jun 2008 4:44pm
Today we saw 5 baby green herons at the nest in the spruce tree. This week
they were all out of the nest, hopping on the branches, where last week we
could only see 3 little bits of fluff. As I was taking pictures, an adult
bird flew in but quickly left, so we did too.

The orioles are back feeding at the orange after a week and a half of no
showings. My husband found the new nest hanging in a maple tree just a few
feet away from the heron nest.

Subject: 3 Mississippi Kites! 6/17
From: "Bird Watcher's Supply & Gift" <birdwsg(AT)verizon.net>

Mike Beath called to report that there were THREE Mississippi Kites in
Newmarket, NH. He said that one was sitting on the nest while 2 others were in
flight. He wondered if one was a sub-adult that was "helping" out the parents.
The birds are at 228 Main Street (Rt 152) just beyond the high school.

Becky Suomala, you were right!
When we were watching the female late Saturday afternoon, Becky
thought she saw a third kite. This gets better all the time!

Subject: Mississippi Kites... Nesting... 6/17
From: Byard Miller <byard(AT)virtualflybox.com>
Date: 17 Jun 2008 8:20pm
I visited Newmarket today from 10am to about 1:30. The female Kite
stayed on the nest the whole time that I was there. On a few
occasions the male made an appearance but never approached the
female. I'm hoping that the human activity in the area is not keeping
him from bringing in nourishment. She is obviously incubating eggs.
At one point she appeared to be turning them.
The nest is located about 4 or 5 feet down from the very tallest
point of a maple tree across the street from 227 South Main St (Rt
152). PLEASE be respectful of the property owners and stay on the
sidewalks. While it may be a novelty for the locals right now, they
may grow weary of all the attention in time. The female will incubate
the eggs for 30 days after which another 30 days will pass before the
young ones fledge. Let's hope that all goes well and we may see them
again in future years!
The local police ask that you park on the side of the road opposite
the sidewalk.
Photo ops were not great today as the male never came in to roost. So
many wonderful pictures were taken by others over the last few days
I'd be ashamed to even offer any up.
