[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Hawk ID--NORTHERN GOSHAWK? Amherst From: cmsbirds(AT)comcast.net (Chris Sheridan) Date: 13 Jun 2008 10:54am This large hawk, flying steadily with strong wing beats (not accipiter-like) was seen flying over the Ponemah Bog in Amherst, heading north, on Wednesday June 11. It was soon beyond the trees and out of sight. It was strongly backlit by late afternoon sun, and the two photos I managed to get were basically silhouettes. It has suggested that this is a NORTHERN GOSHAWK. Two photos: www.pbase.com/image/98602952 www.pbase.com/cmsbirds/image/98602973 The second has been lightened, and contrast increased. Opinions welcome! Chris Sheridan Nashua cmsbirds(AT)comcast.net

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Osprey Nests in Marlborough From: Geoffrey Gardner <anarkiss(AT)ne.rr.com> Date: 13 Jun 2008 1:43pm Two this year osprey nests can be seen in Marlborough from Roxbury Road. Both are located on top of power line towers close to where the line crosses the road. See A on the map referenced below for where the power line crosses the road at two points. The more northerly nest is on the fourth tower east from the road. The second more southerly one --about a quarter of a mile down the road-- is closer to the road. It9s on the first tower on the west side of the road. Here9s the map: A) [150-151] Roxbury Rd, Marlborough, NH 03455 US -------------------------------------------------- To view your map, click on the link below or copy and paste it to your browser: http://www.mapquest.com/mq/3-fgFFNuFFYSovkyOU >> --Geoffrey Gardner
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Willard Pond From: Bruce Boyer <bboyer192(AT)earthlink.net> Date: 13 Jun 2008 3:32pm I went paddling today and was watching some fish jump clear out of the water, when a wake appeared on the other side of the kayak from something moving below the surface. It turned out to be a loon, zooming along in a straight line like a torpedo and passing a few feet from the boat, allowing me to look down on its checkered back through the clear water. Later I saw a mini-kettle of about 6 Broad-winged Hawks drifting over the pond. Bruce Boyer

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Baby Green Herons From: "Muffie" <MH(AT)Hendricks.mv.com> Date: 13 Jun 2008 11:02pm We had been watching a Green heron pair in a nest in a cedar tree in our yard, but had not seen them lately. We were disappointed that they didn't seem to have any offspring. When my husband mowed the lawn today, he saw movement in the tree. He saw these fluffy baby herons, and I ran right out and took a picture. There are actually 3 babies, the third one is behind and to the right of the middle one but was not standing up. They look like Sesame Street characters. http://www.flickr.com/photos/88555333@N00/?saved=1 Muffie Dover Point
