I now remember seeing some pictures of a GB Heron eating one of its
own dead chicks.

Birders
I just had a Common Nighthawk overhead here in Durham. I understand that
there's a nest somewhere else in the state, so does that mean that this is
likely to be attempting to breed, or are they still migrating through? If
it's a nester I'll cover my roof with gravel and see what happens....
