[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Underachieving Hoodie Fledges 9 From: LindaMaley(AT)aol.com Date: 24 May 2008 11:13am Yesterday morning at 9:20, after an hour or so of hesitation, a Hooded Merganser fledge nine young from a nest box in the yard. A check today revealed nine egg membranes and one undeveloped egg. A possible explanation for the low number of eggs might be the use of cedar shavings instead of white pine sawdust, due to my desire to experiment with something that would not clump when wet. I guess I'll stick with the sawdust. That leaves one more Hooded nest and three more Wood Duck nests, for a a total of nine in the yard this year. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: warbling vireo, yellow warbler and others, Hinsdale set-back From: hbreder(AT)comcast.net Date: 24 May 2008 3:30pm Walking on the trail going out to the power towers at the Hinsdale set-back I observed a little yellow warbler flying about and gleaning the fluff off last year's cat-tails for its nest. I got some snapshots of it, overexposed and out-of-focus, and yet a happy image of spring and a new beginning.. I also got a nice shot of a common grackle with nest material in its beak: http://www.onejackdaw.com/My_NA_Birds_Gallery/Yellow_Warbler_Common_Grackle.html In the same area I got these images, my best ever yet of an Eastern Kingbird, and a first for me, of a warbling vireo: http://www.onejackdaw.com/My_NA_Birds_Gallery/Eastern_Kingbird_Warbling_Vireo.html Hilke Breder Brattleboro, VT
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Red headed woorpecker in Campton From: "c-johnson(AT)hughes.net" <c-johnson@hughes.net> Date: 24 May 2008 5:32pm I stepped out the door this afternoon to find a red headed woodpecker on the ground, feeding with a mixed flock of mourning doves, cow birds and blue jays. Wow! A first for me. It stayed around long enough for me to get quite a few photos. Cheryl Johnson Campton

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Bicknell's Thrushes on Cannon Mt From: "Mark Suomala" <mrsuomala(AT)marksbirdtours.com> Date: 24 May 2008 8:01pm Drove up to Cannon Mt this morning and took the first ariel tram ride of the day at about 9:40 am (late start for them). It was foggy above about 3,000 ft and there was a steady northwest wind. I was the only customer on the first ride. At the top, it was 39 degrees, and windier. There were patches of snow in the deep woods, and some big sections of snow still present on the hiking trails. I slogged through the snow and hiked about 0.5 miles down the Kinsman Ridge Trail and back and then around the rim trail and about 0.25 miles down the overlook trail and back. It was fairly quiet on top, but I found a few birds here and there. I briefly heard and then saw a Bicknell's Thrush, and then about 10-minutes later heard 2 more. They were not singing their primary song, but only vocalizing their high-pitched nasal "vee-er" call notes (much more nasal and thinner-sounding than Veery). After exploring for 2.5 hours, I went back to the summit restaurant and saw many inadequately attired people shivering, including several people in shorts with bare feet in open-toed shoes! Most of them looked like they wanted to be somewhere else. Highlights: BICKNELL'S THRUSH 3 all in krumholz on east side (lee) Dark-eyed Junco 6 White-throated Sparrow 6 Yellow-rumped Warbler 3 Common Raven 1 Blackpoll Warbler 3 heard from tram on way up Winter Wren 2 heard from tram on way up Black bear on ski slope (no skis or poles) Mark Suomala www.marksbirdtours.com

I wandered the trails for about 3-hours and found 25-species of birds.
