Subject: Golden Eagles, again
From: "Matt Brady" <zerogambit(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 27 Jan 2002 12:25pm
At about 1:15 PM yesterday (the 25th) David Vander Pluym and I had a pair of
adult GOLDEN EAGLES cruising around the lower East Field of UCSC. About a
half-hour later, David had them again, this time sitting on the hillside.
There was also a RED-TAILED HAWK flying with them, offering a nice size
comparison. The hawk looked tiny! It would be interesting to see if they
are going to nest up here this year.

years ago they seemed to nest in most years off to the west of campus in
the Majors Creek drainage. It is very unlikely that there is a suitable
nest tree or cliff on or very near the campus proper. Since they nest in
big trees often, it could make location of the nest in SC foothills very
difficult, also they often fly miles each day to and from hunting areas

Subject: Orchard Oriole, Tufted Duck, Gr. Wh-fr. Goose
From: Steve Rovell <vagrant(AT)redshift.com>

Hi Birders -
The male ORCHARD ORIOLE is still present at Natural Bridges SP. I saw
it this morning between 8:10 and 8:20 AM near marker 3 on the trail that
begins just inside the back entrance (off Delaware). It first sat up
high in the willows for about 30 seconds and then flew to the largest
clump of eucalyptus that overhangs the trail. There, it drank nectar
from the eucalyptus blooms. When I left it was still there.
I then made a brief stop at Westlake Pond in Santa Cruz to check up on
the TUFTED DUCK and GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE. One of the geese was
still present, as was the TUFTED DUCK and 2 CANVASBACK.

Subject: SCBC J26 trip report
From: Todd Newberry <taxa(AT)darwin.UCSC.EDU>

JANUARY 26 2002 - SCBC TRIP TO ELKHORN SLOUGH
A Swedish saying purportedly insists there is not bad weather, only bad
clothing. But this morning a raw, wet wind - one even might say a misty one
- made quick work of a dozen well-sweatered SCBC'ers. Jetty Rd offered
close views of Greater Scaup and Bufflehead in the lagoon and various gulls
on the breakwater, but not terribly much else - an omen. The eucalyptus
patch at Moon Glow Dairy was eerily quiet by mid-morning, but we were
delighted by a bold Winter Wren; then from the bluff we admired a Harrier
and some Green-winged Teal, and learned i.d. lessons from a fence-top
line-up of Cowbirds and all three local blackbird species. Hardly prizes,
but at least it wasn't raining. At the Elkhorn Reserve HQ a flying quintet
of White Pelicans capped the morning. Then we may have made our mistake; we
paused - already a little wet, some claimed - for lunch. Maybe this
offended the pluvial powers, because, I must admit, it began to rain in
earnest. The ancient Greeks said, "It never rains on real birders." Having
given them the morning, we gave the weather its afternoon and turned to
homier pursuits. Only (but perhaps surprisingly) 88 species tallied, a full
20 fewer than on a trial run the sunnier day before.
